View Full Version : been to busy to post as things aren't going well...
after Cate was doing really well..things have been going down hill. We're still waiting to hear from GOSH but knew it would be a while because Cate was starting to put on weight and had a few "normal" nappies...but for the past week she's been back to where we were months ago..
the only thing we can think is the problem is the Pepti as it's the only "dairy" she gets...she's already wheat, soya, egg, nut, shellfish and dairy free so it can't possibly be another allergy....has anyone heard of children developing an allergy to this type of formula?

No, never heard of an allergy/intolerance to hypallergenic formulas. Wheat-Free does not mean Gluten-Free -could it be that? But I figure that children on a very limited diet have such a low threshold of new foods that their bodies will easily reject more and more things...if that makes sense.
Keep us posted.

I do feel for you. This must be so frustrating. I know nothing about Pepti as I have not used it but it does seem odd that it would cause such problems if she was settled on it for a while. Is it possible that she could be picking up food from another child this week as they have all been at home? It is hard to watch them all the time. Even a small biscuit may be enough to cause trouble.
sorry to hear the bad news. if you are absiolutely positive that there is no way that any bad stuff has made it into the diet then it may be that a further intolerance has emerged.
are the meals very similar? ie is it potatoes nearly every main meal? variety is the key.
but first i'd double check that there is no way that a mistake has been made as it will only take a small amount to trigger a problem and then it'll take couple of days etc for the effects to wear off again.

I am no expert but I have looked at the milks table again. Pepti junior is made from hydolysed whey but the source for fat content is refined soya bean plus some other things. In fact all of these milks contain soya in some form or other. I can only assume that they have altered the soya in some way. so that it should not be a problem for those who are soya intolerant.
Maybe the soya content is too much for Cate - maybe she is very sensitive. I thought that these special milks were designed such that there would be no problem.
Other than that I agree with Matt - are you sure she hasn't helped herself to something she shouldn't have?
Vanessa made a good point too - have you checked everything for gluten?
I hope she gets better soon - it is a worry for you. Could you contact anybody to get the appointment with GOSH speeded up?

I haven't got anything useful to add ... just wanted to say that i really feel for you. My little one is only dairy and egg free ... and that can sometimes be hard enough. Keep smiling ... great to have a site like this where you can feel you are doing something proactive!

HI Ruth, sorry to hear things are not going well, poor little girl. Pepti does still contain some milk protein so id go back to your GP, soundsl like she needs NEocate which is completly milk free.

I truly feel for you - our son was hospitalized, and seen by numerous peadeatric experts but it was two and a half years before we saw any relief in the form of a dairy allergy diagnosis.
I am not sure how old Cate is. If weaned, then Matt is right, variety is the key. If not weaned, and formula fed, it must be very tricky indeed - seek guidance on the formula.
Have you looked into the blood group / diet research? In line with food allergy/intolerance research I have read up on it recently and I found it very interesting and useful...I've even referred my own parents & grandparents to it (though at 92 grandad might just say sod that for a laugh!). Its worth a look to see what you think
Having said that, it took two and a half years for me to be in a position to be able to sit and read research at night!!!!!!!!! All the sleeplessness and agonizing inability to help...as I said, really feeling for you, hope GOSH can give you support and reassurance, they are meant to be the best. Hang on in there.:icon_grou
