OK DS we decided is Lactose intollerant after he vastly improved when he is dairy free and has SMA LF... his nappies are still quite loose BUT we are down to only one or two a day - way better than the up to 12 we were having at one point!! We reintroduced normal SMA and milk into his diet he was ok with it in his diet but as soon as we gave him the formula the nappies where back...

BUT now he's back on SMA LF and completely dairy free he still has quite loose nappies sometimes (sorry if TMI - but one normal dirty nappy a day plus a loose one) - on top of that in the last two weeks he has lost 4oz.. not a lot but he's been eating fine so I am a little concerned that we haven't quite got to the bottom of it.. I've started doing a food diary again and HV has referred me to a dietician - just wondering what else the dietician may want us to do so I can pre-empt it to try and speed the process up.

How long is it since you tried the normal SMA? It can take about 3 weeks for it all to work through the body so these problems may be still due to the short period on normal formula. His system might have been upset too and may just be taking time to mend itself.

You need to look at everything else that he is eating and make sure that there is no hidden dairy (eg. butterfat, whey powder, cheese flavouring etc) even processed meats often contain milk so you can't be too careful.

It might be necessary to try a completely dairy free milk for a while, preferably a hypo allergenic one rather than soya (pepti or nutramigen are possibles).

In the experience of many people here, dieticians are not particularly helpful, so don't have too many expectations from your visit there. A diary will be a useful tool and if possible go right back to basics with no new foods until you have identified the problem.

Thanks - bit disapointed many haven't got much from the dietician - not expecting a mircale cure but was hoping it would be productive... well we'll see I suppose...

Nursery are doing a list of all ingredients of what he's eating as am I... defiantley no hidden milk in anything I'm giving him as I've been really strict and Nursery have the list of milk related products and as they cook from scratch they are sure he hasn't been given anything by mistake... hadn't really considered the fact that it could be his tummy still reacting to the original SMA - will bear that in mind this week as this is the beginning of the 3rd week since we switched him back.
