Since my youth I've had a soft spot for Smash, I even like to eat it dry. Last night my mother popped over with a big tub of it as a treat, so imagine my dismay to find that the 'improved' version has milk in it.
Why do they do this? It was fine as it was. Yesterday afternoon as I left work they were saying on the radio that dairy is now the most common allergy, yet more and more food manufacturers are adding it to their products
Hi Zoe,
I love that as well, so thank you for letting me know. So dairy is the most common allergy? That seems laughable considering how many things contain dairy.
Oh well...

Oh i aint had Smash in years, remember the advert, it was sooo funny.
Sorry for changing the subject:D
Just had to go check the tubs in the kitchen as I had some Smash for my tea (with home-made liver, bacon & sausage casserole - yummy). It is ok but will have to keep an eye out for the 'improved stuff' this is not good news! Thanks Zoe
they add it as it is cheap and a bulking agent.....

Hi - not sure if you've already tried this but I get 'Mr Mash' from our Asda and it is just the same infact i prefer it (especially for the little ones) as it isn't full of salt as Smash is - you can add your own if you prefer then, and definatley dairy free!

Well that sounds lovely Jayne. I will definitely have to find the nearest Asda and try that.

I'm gonna say this before Matt does....:lol2: :lol2: .. Smash is a whole lot better when you do your own with potatoes mixed with soya milk to make it creamier. yum
nope wasn't going to bother..... you all know what i think of that sort of stuff.:lol2:

This isn't something I've ever bought, but would have been something handy to take away with us.....must remember next time we go away.
I checked the 'Improved Smash' whilst shopping in Morrisons today and it is 15% milk. They did have some packets of the original Smash in so I bought some to stock up with. They also had the Mr Mash and Morrisons own make, both are dairy free.

...even the big tub? I just had a look and the one I have here doesn't!
However, Eden won't touch Smash with soya milk. We make our own -much nicer! Or buy Tesco's pre-cooked potatoes and just micorwave them and then mash.
I heard that a nut allergy is THE most common allergy - 1 in 70 now.
Vanessa.
Yes, even the big tub. I'm going to write to them to see if they are stopping production of the original smash. I don't use it that often but it is so easy and I would just hate to find lumps in proper mash. I think this is about the only convenience food I do use.
they recon the best gadget to buy is a potato ricer. bit like an oversized garlic press. guaranteed no lumps in mash.

I agree with Matt my potato ricer is essential.I did get given one by the mother with had changeable discs in the head it was a nightmare the discs kept coming out the one i have now is from ikea and cost £2 which was a lot less than the useless one.It makes creamy mash without the need for extra fat to be added:) :) :)

Is Mr Mash asda own product or another make?
I've seen Mr Mash in Morrisons aswell so it must be another make and not confined to asda. I did try it a couple of years back but went back to Smash after trying it.

Mr Mash isn't an Asda own brand but thats the only place I've even seen it.. it's on the next shelf to the Smash.. I don't think sainsburys own brand mash has milk in either but I haven't tried it..
I just love it for when we go away - I LOVE proper mash the rest of the time.

ooo naughty Sainsburys - they've changed their instant mash too.. it now contains milk! the ingredients look identical to Smash - wonder whether they make it for them?? so Sainsburys own is a no no too!
