Hey,
After going to the hospital to see a dietician during the week, I've now been told I have to go on an exclusion diet. I can't have -
- Wheat
- Eggs
- Dairy (obviously)
- Onions
- Citrus Fruits
- Nuts
- Beef
- Rye
- Barley
- Maize (corn)
- Yeast
- Potatoes
Just wondering if anyone else has ever been crazy enough to do this?! Any tips? Recipes? We went looking around a big health food shop this morning and my diet is going to consist of lots of rice, quiona and some millet and buckwheat porridge. A small loaf of rice bread cost £6!!!:o

Hiya purple raver....Is this what you got to avaoid? I eat loads of stuff with rice too...Gosh there seems lots for you to avoid, good luck with it...I just have to avoid dairy stuff especialy the main one which is lactose itself....

You poor thing, i find it hard to avoid only eggs, dairy and alcohol . so good luck with that.

Lan one of the owners of this site has been on an exclusion diet. I thought she was very brave as it sounds like a load of boring meals.
The whole point of this diet for those who don't know is to only eat foods which are not known to cause allergies/intolerances. Once everything is stabilised (not sure how long but Lan will know) you then add in one food to see what happens. You gradually over months add foods in until hopefully you have a reaction to one or some which indicates that you have found your problem food.
I prefer my method which is cut out something see if you improve. Then test again by adding it back in to the diet. It worked for eggs. This will really only work if you don't have too many problem foods. I have a number of intolerances but at least they developed slowly one at a time.
The only other alternative is to put your trust in the York tests and shell out £250!!!

I haven't done an exclusion diet but if you like chicken, turkey, prawns and other types of fish, vegetables, spices and herbs, I think you should be able to come up with some quite healthy meals.
One simple option: Just sling your chosen protein, veg, and a tin of tomatoes in a pan add a few spices and serve with rice.
Risottos, Stir Fry veg with protein. Curry, Soups. Make your food interesting using different marinades, spices and herbs.

I have been on an elimination diet 3 times, so am well up on it. Not nice I know. I had to take all the foods out for 2/3 weeks (depending on the dietician) and then add them in one at a time, leaving 3 clear non-symptom days between each one.
I have to say though that the list has definitely been shortened since I done it, as things like alcohol and even tap water were off limits!!!
During my time on it, I basically ate loads of rice, wheat and gluten free pasta and cooked dinners.
If you do have any questions, or are feeling low and need a chat, you know where I am. It isn't easy and I'd be a liar if I said otherwise, but the support is here for you.

i can only suggest buying some wheat free flour and making some flat breads. check that rice bread as the chances are it's got yeast in it.
my shortcake recipe should be ok.
it is boring to exclude but it is the only reliable way.

I am dairy and yeast intolerant. I tend to eat lots of rice, fish and veg. I steer clear of sauces as they often contain yeast.
Have you had any advice on a yeast free diet...here is the info I was given.
Avoid
Grapes and plums (the white bloom on the outside is a yeast)
Dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, figs, dates, etc)
Brewers and bakers yeast (bread with yeast, wine, beer, lager etc.,pizza, pitta bread)
Yeast extracts (marmite, oxo, bovril etc., check labels of gravy granules, hydrolysed vegetable is also a yeast)
All alcoholic drinks
Mushrooms, truffles
Cheese - all kinds (goats, cows, sheep and cottage cheese)
Vinegar - all kinds - malt, wine, apple etc. Also found in pickles, chutneys, mayonnaise, sauces, dressings
Monosodium glutamate - also labelled MSG or E621 (found in Chinese food, cured meats, flavoured crisps and other savouries)
Smoked food - all kinds
Melon - particularly very ripe
Also note
Nuts can be very yeasty. Make sure you buy them in sealed packets and keep them in the fridge.
Most antibiotics are cultured on yeast. Ask your doctor for one which is not yeast derived.
Check labels on vitamin tablets - some may contain yeast.
So sorry it is such a long list but if you are going to go for the exclusion diet you may as well do it properly!
