Hi
I hoped someone might be able to help.
I was vegetarian before I came to Japan and now I can't read the labels so could someone tell me whether, in general, sausages are dairy free or not.
Many thanks.

Hi Helen,
The sausages i eat seem to be fine, i have the richmond ones. They do contain wheat . But ive had no ill effect with them. Not sure my irish sausages will reach to Japan though:lol2:
Generally speaking, you should be safest with the more expensive ones, because they tend to have more meat in them and so less need for cheap fillers.
like claire said you should be fine as they would normally use bread crumbs as a binding bulking agent but unless there was milk in those then no reason to add it.... doesn't mean they haven't of course.
i'd google the firm and ask them direct.
I get my sausages from Marks as they don't contain wheat or dairy and they are yummy too ! They are just normal own brand premium pork sausages !

No help for Japan, but over here veggie sausages made by cauldron are dairy free, but Quorn ones aren't.

Thanks for all your replies.
I'll remember about the Cauldron sausages when I'm home - I love them so that's good news (as long as they don't change the recipe between now and then!)
I still can't read enough of the ingredients so discover whether various types of sausages here contain breadcrumbs but I'm working on it - with help from Japanese friends! I am yeast intolerant too so the breadcrumbs info was particularly useful.
However, I have just discovered a couple of restaurants which have allergy lists for all their dishes so I now have a few 'safe' meals I can eat out.
I can't begin to tell you how much being in contact with everyone helps me - I sometimes feel very isolated out here in Japan and now I feel much more supported. Thanks.
happy to be a contact for you in the old country :)
sushi is going to be dairy freei would think! assuming you like very fresh fish.

I wouldn't last two minutes in Japan - I would starve. :lol2: I am not a lover of fish.
Great to hear that you can eat out Helen.

I love sushi and sashimi (raw fish). I really enjoy it although I have a problem with raw eel. Just can't eat it - can't explain why, it just turns my stomach - the thought of it not the taste! Fish is much fresher here and tastes really good. I do sometimes commit a huge crime and cook top quality sushi tuna. Just quickly sear it on each side. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
However, there are many things I can't cope with. Particularly slimy things, shudder! I don't like natto (fermented soy beans) as I can't stand the smell. I can't get my head around crispy fried chicken feet. I struggle with the tiny fried fish (too crunchy). And I can't even contemplate fish roe, let alone fish sperm (which my husband ate recently!)
However, Italian is very popular here so pasta and pizza are easy to get hold of. Most places serve pasta with a tomato and basil sauce which tends to be dairy and yeast free. And you can get a bowl of plain rice and a bowl of salad almost anywhere - not particularly exciting but sufficient and safe! Also there are many international shops so I can get hold of familar things (and things with ingredient lists in English) which helps.
Anyway, today is a good day. The sun is shining - it is shorts and t shirt weather although the evenings are now cool. My daughter is at youchien (Japanese nursery) and my son is asleep so I have a few precious moments to myself. I am going to put the kettle on for a cup of tea and catch up with writing birthday cards and letters (some are already late). Hope everyone else is having a good time too. Sorry seem to have gone off topic from sausages. Oh well.
Helen
