Hi
My name is Sarah and I have been put on a dairy free diet in order to establish what causes my allergic reactions. I have tried living dairy-free before but failed at my first hurdle - cheese!
I have now been asked by the doctor to try it again and do it properly this time .
So here I am, I have no idea what to do or where to start!
Just wondered if anybody can offer any advice or tips, particularly in relation to hot beverages - I loved my milky lattes and now having to go without - any decent substitutes??
Thanks
Sarah

Welcome to the site. Dairy free does get easier with time. First of all go to this page on this site and print out the alternative names for milk
http://www.dairyfreeuk.com/forum//showthread.php?t=738
You will need to check everything you buy for hidden dairy. Allow extra time for shopping.
Milk alternatives - it is a case of trying some and see what you think. I can just about cope with the fresh soya milk found in the chiller in supermarkets. Others here like the long life soya milk. Rice milk is not good for hot drinks as they just taste of rice - yuk.
Cheese alternatives - there are no substitutes that taste like the real thing. You have to try some and see which you like the taste of. I like Scheese which is round and is only found in the fridge of local health food shops here. Tofutti make very nice soft cheese but I did find it sickly after a few weeks.
I have tried melting Cheezly. This comes as a pack of slices and again they are found in the fridge. I actually found this in Holland & Barratt. It does melt on toast and is quite nice.
My craving for cheese vanished after 2 years :lol2: Others here will tell you about their favourite cheese.
If you need help with any other food ask and we are bound to have the answer.
welcome.
well the hot drinks. i do have rice milk in hot drinks and like the taste so it really is each to their own. just a matter of trying them out.
scheese or cheezley. i go for scheese and order it in from my local health food shop, from what i remember fairly few people like the cheddar version of either. i persoanally have either the cheshire or the mozarella version.
wander through the forums here for ideas as we cover most topics and keep coming back.
and make friends with your local health food shop.
where are you ?

Welcome to the site Sarah, the things i miss are cheese on toast and Boiled eggs:( .
Copper has covered most areas i think so nothing much to add.
Some prefer rice milk, fresh soya, long life, it's just a case of trying and seeing for your tastebuds, but i does get easier.

FAO Sazzler118 - I have been dairy free for so long now, I can't remember what it is like to want to have cow juice!!
Re: your milky lattes - Starbucks and Costa Coffee are the worlds best. No matter what anyone says about globalisation, they are the only two places I have found that do soya lattes, cappachinos, hot chocolate - whatever is on their menu, they will do dairy free! Just remind them not to add the whipped cream :)
Also, Waitrose and health food shops and even some other supermarkets are great for dairy free ice cream (Swedish Glace) and yoghurts (Alpro).
As for cheese, depending on how serious your dairy problem is (I'm intolerant so it won't kill me but it makes me very ill), sheeps cheese is a good alternative. Believe me, it may sound gross, but I have converted my hubby!! Waitrose are the best place to shop for this as they do Sheeps Wenslydale which is lovely. Other alternatives are cheese such as Ossau Iraty and Manchego - both made from sheep milk but both rather dry. Waitrose is also currently doing a Sussex Slipcote which is a sheeps cream cheese.
Happy shopping!!

I am totally lactose intolerant and any kind of mammal cheese makes me ill.
The proteins are slightly different in the mammal milks ie cows is not the same as goats but if protein is causing the problem, then the goat etc protein will probably become a problem too.
