Need a bit of advice.........A few times recently when Zac soils his nappy where the poo has been i contact with his bottom it is very red and has raised white blotches ( rather like hives?) I don't think it hurts him as he doesn't cry when I clean him up. When I next change his nappy they are gone so it does just seem to be a temporary contact rash.
Has anyone come across this before?
On the whole I am still not happy as I suspect there is more which hasn't been picked up which is causing Zac problems........but when I have mentioned his bowel "habits" to the GP and the dietician they seem to think it's just the fibre in his diet!! And because he is thriving they don't seem to think there is a problem. I am STILL waiting for an appointment with the allergist but I'm not sure if there is any other route I should be trying? I have just been getting on with it and hoping things will improve, but unfortunately it's not.

If it is only when he soils his nappy is sounds like a reaction to something but what is anybodies guess. Does this happen every time he soils his nappy? If not can you pin it down to something he eats only now and again?

He is already allergic to the common things. The other food quoted as a likely problem is egg. Does he eat eggs and how often?

 I know that this is months down the line, but I have only just spotted your posting about bottoms!

Bath in titree oil (often misspelled as teatree). Available from Baldwins online or in many decent chemists (but often much more expensive).

It is the most incredible stuff and I have never ever bathed my son in anything else, no soap or shampoo has been near him and he is now three. It is wonderful healer.

Calendula is also a goodie, try the earth friendly baby natural calendula daily care cream. THey also do a red clover cream for real nappy probs.

Out of interest are you/were you using washables or disposables? True nappy rash is a chemical reaction between the soiling and the skin and is usually more prevalent in disposable wearers...but equally a food intolerance can produce similar skin issues in the nappy department.

of course, by now I hope taht your problem has been resolved - I'll keep looking through the messages and find an update no doubt! :)

Thanks Copper, the "rash" isn't every time and has only happened over the last week........I've been trying to figure out if there is anything different and the only thing I can think of is that my mum's bought some different fruit juice which has grapefruit in.......although he only has a tiny amount of juice topped up with about 7 parts water. We are going to stop giving him this then try him with one lot in a week or so to see if that's the culprit?
In terms of my general concerns I don't think oats agree with him....but the dietician said it's just because they are a fibre food! I am still suspicious that he has a problem with gluten....even if not in terms of coeliac. He only really has egg in cakes and biscuits, I don't really want to cut out anything else from his diet unles absolutely necessary I am hoping that once I see the allergist he may test him for all the common allergens so we can at least rule them out.
LouJ, it isn't like normal nappy rash and doesn't seem to hurt him at all. I generally use natural aromatherapy products on him and although he wears disposables they don't stay on long enough after he's soiled to cause a problem....he very rarely gets a sore bottom.

It sounds like acidic poo causing the reaction, Phil (3YO) had the same until we cut all the dairy out, because it was just fermenting and producing something like paintstripper at the other end, so it could be something else maybe yeast or nightshades?(tomatoes potatoes peppers etc) yeast is tricky because so many things produce it naturally, hope you manage to pin it down
