After a bit of research in, Asda not sure if it's the same with all supermarket own brands, but i would think so , seeing as they mostly come from the same manufacturers . i've found that Jam tarts seem to be milk free, which is a relief, i don't know what would happen if phil didn't get his 'cake':lol2:

keep checking the packets as Tesco own jam tarts used to be dairy free. Just before Xmas I checked most of their cake boxes, packets etc and most of those that used to be dairy free now contain dairy. I am not impressed.

there is a general trend towards removing trans fats which are being replaced in some cases by butter.... so like copper said keep watching them.

Mr Kiplings jam tarts seem to be dairy free as were Sainsbury's last time I checked. Tescos aren't though and the specialist ones they do are like rubber!!

Its much easier to make your own, then you know what is going in them. I use soya marg in my pastry and I can't taste the difference and Claire loves them. Do the same in cakes - just so Claire can go to school with cake in her lunch box just like any other kid!

Drunks have now moved to outside hostel on Amersham Hill, not a pretty site.

Town is just the same except building work and aroundabout that seems to change every day that I drive round it near Eden.

Get making the pastry, I have just finished making doughnuts!!!

OK Dolphingirl. I need help with my pastry! It just comes out really hard and cardboard like. I suspect it may be the marg I am using but it is the only dairy free stuff I can find. Any advice or ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Helen

i'm no expert but it's a version of shortcrust pastry you are making, so you need to handle it as little as possible. too much will make it hard and brittle.

you could try a mix of dairy free spread and lard.

when do you want the visitors then dolphingirl? doughnuts and jam tarts.

Thanks Matt
I am going to have to find the Japanese equivalent of lard.
Well, that's my challenge for the week!

Hi HelenB

As Matt rightly pointed out you need to handle the dough as lightly as possible, you are not kneeding it just mixing, when rolling ut do not press on the rolling pin keep it light.

I also use half lard and half dairy free spread and cook in the oven on a high heat.

Good luck

PS Matt you can come around any time, all homemade here in High Wycombe!!
