Louise
I'm sorry that I know nothing about your condition but I know about milk free living so I thought I'd say hi anyway. There's always someone here who will do their best to answer any questions you might have.
What cheeses have you been recommended? Cheese is the worst thing about a dairy free diet because the alternatives are a poor substitute and we're always on the look out for worthwhile products. Personally, I like Tofutti slices and soft cheese, though I know Lan likes Cheezly. I'm just about to ring the health food shop to see if they have any slices in stock before I make the 10 mile round trip.
What is galactosaemia? What sort of symptoms does it involve? I think I have heard of it before but I don't know anything about it.
Pam

Hi Louise. Was your condition discovered very early? You have my sympathy as I am just lactose intolerant (with a few other food allergies) and that is enough to cope with! Eating out is a bit tricky and shopping takes ages as every label has to be checked. However, at the end of the day if I overdose on lactose I just spend hours feeling very sick - usually all through the night! Your problem is more serious.
For Lan and Pam I found this site which seems to explain Louise's conditon in a fairly straightforward way.

This is a reply to zachary...
Hi, I don't know how much I can help you but I will try.
First of all, I think you should find a new doctor! Coping with any allergy is easier if you have the support of a professional - perhaps you can find an allergy specialist in your area?
If its any help, I notice that my son (almost 2yrs old) (not yet potty trained) has a bad stommach when he has dairy, but more noticeable with him is the character change since cutting out dairy. He is so happy when he does not eat dairy, and so fretful and upset when he does have it.
If you have tried dairy free products for your son for a week and you notice no change, perhaps you should start thinking of other possible allergies? However, if you do notice a change, maybe its worth sticking to a dairy free diet for a while longer - perhaps his tummy needs more time on this new diet to settle? I noticed a big change in my son after just a day of dairy-free but perhaps your son needs more time to adjust? I only have experience of my son so perhaps other users can suggest their experiences?
Yes dairy-free is expensive, but I guess it also depends where you live. Have you tried Jewish Kosher Pareve products - they are dairy free, but yes they are not cheap. However if you come to the conclusion that your son does well on them, it's worth the expense!
Do let us know how it goes,
All the best
Kelly.
