Happy new year, everyone.

I was thinking it was about time for a new thread!

I'm ecstatic to be back to work and life back to its normal, boring self again :(

Copper I hope you're feeling better. EVERYONE here had that virus. We seem to have had it 3 times. Meg had really high temp before Christmas had to take her up to hosp because of her history. Ian had it for new year.

Anyway Happy New Year to all. Let's hope it's a healthy one for us all.

Megan goes back to school on Monday - 2 teacher training days this week.

I'm not happy about it as the 11+ exams are Tuesday and Wednesday and they are supposed to sit 2 practice papers before them!!!!

I'm getting her to do some past papers here but it's not the same as getting used to doing them at school.

Oh it's snowing here!:o

Happy New Year all.
Sorry to hear that Copper, you're not alone though, I managed to get both a bacterial and viral chest infection (the first one went easily, a month later I've still got the latter!!), nothing like starting as we mean to go on:) On the plus side, the doctor said she was aware I was lactose intolerant and so had already ruled out the main form of the new medication, so that was quite positive. I think it might finally have been put on my notes that I can't tolerate it at all!!

I've been doing quite a lot of crafts over the Christmas holiday: I made a very bizarre (only I could make it) pom pom Christmas owl, as well as a pom pom reindeer and penguin. I was staying at a friends and we decorated a huge Christmas cake my Mum had made for me as well. So that has been quite good fun- I've missed doing crafts so it was nice to get back into doing things like that.

I hope you all have a lovely new year. Has anyone got snow yet?

Copper

We don't do snow here. It did get dark at 3pm!

We've had snow today, there was a bit of a covering this morning which got worse as I got nearer to where I work. Few snow showers during the day but nothing major and its all gone now.

Pity that so many of you have been poorly over Xmas. I was lucky and didn't have any bugs, Paul has man flu now though. Bit of a cold and everyone suffers! I did think I was getting something on boxing day though as I just couldn't stop sneezing whilst we were at Paul's parents. It had stopped by the next day though so i don't know if I was a bit sensitive to something in their house. They have a cat, a budgie and had a real Christmas Tree. We have a real tree so I don't think it was that.

Back to work yesterday - bad as ever! Enough said I don't want to start the new year off on a winge.

Got lots of chocolate goodies still to tuck into, some dairy free fudge I got is rather yummy!

This is the first Christmas for ages that I didn't get any craft stuff, I did treat myself to a pasta machine the other day though, it was only £7.99 from Aldi and will come in handy for rolling Fimo out when I get back into crafting.

Best Wishes for your move back Helen, will you be going back to where you lived before or to a new place altogether?

We went up into our loft today to start putting the decorations away and discovered that something has been up there. It has nibbled at two pieces of my exercise equipment, which we put up there out of the way over Christmas. We can remember hearing something early one morning (5.30 am) which sounded pretty close, but it stopped as soon as Paul got out of bed to look out of the window. We haven't heard it since and that was over a week ago. What ever it was obviously didn't like my exercise stuff being up there out of the way so we have brought it back down again - haven't used any of it yet though.:lol2:

We have tennants in our house at the moment and, as they are happy there and it is not in a good area for primary schools, we have decided to leave them in it and rent a house to start with. That's on my to do list! Find a house to live in. Luckily we have friends in the area so they are willing to go and look at properties for us. Fingers crossed that it is all sorted by the time we go home. However, for the first couple of weeks Maddy, Josh and I will go to my parent's house to get over jetlag (ten times worse with young children!)

I am sorry to hear that you have had creatures in the loft. Mice? I hope you get rid of them quickly, before they munch their way through anything else.

We are having a lazy day today (although we might venture out to the children's centre later) so that I am organised for the early start tomorrow - Maddy goes back to youchien (nursery) and then Josh has a music class.

Hope everyone else is well. Helen

Mice are very silly as they will eat anything. I hope that they stay away now.

Good luck with your return to England, Helen. I think that going to your parents to get over the jet lag is an excellent idea.

Pauls been back in the loft today, but couldn't see any fresh chewing - I mentioned mice to him and he thought either a rat or the squirel. I hadn't even thought of a rat but Paul says they can climb up the drain pipes - its just made me cringe.

I've had a facial this evening, very relaxing. The girl is nearly qualified to do pedicures aswell so as she is doing them at a reduced rate at the moment, until her certificates come through, so I booked myself in for one next Tuesday evening. Its my new years resolution to think of myself more, so i think i'm getting off to a good start.

That sounds nice Jill. I keep meaning to go and have these kind of things done, but some how never quite get round to it- along with having my haircut etc....

Good luck with the move back Helen. Hope you find things easier when you're here.

Mice used to get into our house through our next door neighbours house, which annoyed us immensely, especially when we went to get the Christmas decorations one year and they'd all been chewed:(

I haven't been around much as I've been having a bit of a nightmare with my asthma, I had a severe chest infection which has now triggered all my allergies so I've been hiding away trying to stop coughing- hopefully in the next few days I should be back to normal (for me).
My studies are going quite well, (I passed my first two, one with 92% :D ) I start some new courses soon, and am waiting for my references to come through so that I can send off my applications for my Masters courses which is rather scary.

I've also nearly got a diagnosis- well I technically do, but it's all very controversial so I'm kind of stuck in limbo with the naming of it. Hopefully now they can look at ways of minimising symptoms, and hopefully getting some improvement/stability in my condition (statistics suggest that 0-6% of people with this actually recover fully, so looks like it could be a long fight). I'm quite excited in a way that they've finally agreed what's wrong (well for this week anyway, it could all change!!), although they can't actually do anything for me, it's nice to know that we'll all be working from the same page, if that makes sense.

I hope you're all doing OK, and are having productive starts to the new year:)

Congratulations Claire, 92% wow that is brilliant.

I am pleased to hear that the medical world now have a diagnosis. I guess it is something that none of us have heard of, is it rare?

I really hope that you are one of those who makes a full recovery. Meanwhile doing a Masters will keep your mind busy. It will come in useful when you are better. Your cv would be very good as not only will you be able to demonstrate that you have a brain but that you also have determination and great inner stength.

Sorry to hear you've had a chest infection Claire. The asthmatics here have all had a chest infection too! I went for a 'routine' appointment at the Drs today and I've got a virus infection (again!). Rest they say!? My painkillers have finally been taken off the market. They have no licence to dispense them now. Not sure what I can do as I'm allergic to most other things. Trying not to think about it too much.:(

Well done on your test results Claire.:lol2:

Megan had 1st two 11+ exams today, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. 2 tomorrow - maths and english. Yesterday they did 3 practise papers - 3 hours on their 1st day back!:o

Pleased you got a diagnosis, it's nice that they agree as to what you are suffering with, let's hope there is successful treatment they can give you for it.

Hope no-one affected by the bad gales and snow.

cnc
08-01-2008, 07:56 PM
The diagnosis itself is all a bit of a mess with the naming etc... but basically what they think has happened is that when I first had the virus (the one that looked like mono but wasn't), it's caused damage to my central nervous system. Consequently my body doesn't react to things like it should do and damage has been done to various parts causing some of my constant symptoms. They believe that I have true ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) as opposed to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It all gets a bit complicated, as due to politics ME got labelled under CFS, but it's a different illness, (with inflammation and damage) however, trying to convince the majority of people that this is the case is futile, so I think we're going to remove those terms from my diagnosis as it's currently affecting how medical people treat me, which isn't helpful.

I can't ever doing anything simply can I?! I had the great fun of trying to explain this all to my doctor this morning (as this ruling has come from a neurologist), but he took it quite well.

Sorry to hear your painkillers have been taken off the market Linny, I thought most of them had been replaced, or are you allergic to all the replacements? I hope you feel much better soon, it's not fun is it?
Thanks for the congratulations, much appreciated.

I hope Megan does well with her exams and isn't too worried about them.

Well done on everything Claire - studies, diagnosis. Hope everything keeps going well and in the right direction, you seem very determined.

I can't believe how much studies children have to do now. My nephews in Belgium get loads of homework and they are still at junior school. All I can ever remember doing was spelling and times tables. I can remember feeling very chuft with myself when I was about 7 as I could spell a long word - destination. Funny what you can remember. Good luck to Megan. Or as my mum always said - Do your best.

Thanks for the messages re Megan tests. 'Do your best' is our motto!! I tols her it's just an entrance exam for 1 school if she doesn't pass she'll go the another school. The 11+ is all maths based now - you have to be a maths whizz to get into grammar school here!

Claire - I'm allergic to most other painkillers - codeine makes me float but I'll have to give it a go!!!:w00t1: The virus I have is making me ache even more at the moment, especially my legs and feet:mad:.

I have a friend with ME, she lives in Warrington and I know she had trouble getting a diagnosis.

I don't know if anyone saw the tragic news about the 11 yr old schoolboy being killed by a bus in Dartford yesterday. It was about half a mile from our flat - it's so sad. He was going to the school just up the road from here - Wilmington Grammar.

Happy New Year everyone! Good luck with the move Helen and well done CNC, if you need any help with the maths Linny post it on here! I've had an eventful start to the new year, got assaulted by a madwoman in a road-rage incident the other day, she also rammed my car so I am now trying to sort out the insurance which I could well do without! Luckily no one was hurt though.

Hi All

I am suffering from a sore lung just now trying to avoid going to the doctor incase they put me on steroids!

On a positive note I am going to Newcastle to see a 2nd consultant for all of my allergies bit of a trek from near Edinburgh but I hope it is worth it.

At the end of this month I am going to see a pain consultant due to the nerve damage in my hand after fracturing my scaphoid in August so maybe he can give me some other ideas for pain relief

Linny have you tried using Zydol (tramadol) for pain killers?? I am looking at the data sheet just now and they do not seem to contain any codeine. if you want I can email you all the ingredients listed.

Helen - good luck with the insurance this is all you really need just now

Claire - I'm allergic to most other painkillers - codeine makes me float but I'll have to give it a go!!!:w00t1: The virus I have is making me ache even more at the moment, especially my legs and feet:mad:.

None of my medication is codeine based as they don't like giving it young people and I believe there's a family history of bad reactions to it so I'm quite keen on avoiding it. There are quite a few others avaliable, I know around here the NHS is quite keen on minimising pain so they're more than happy to give you medication.

I have a friend with ME, she lives in Warrington and I know she had trouble getting a diagnosis.

I had a bit of the opposite problem in that I got diagnosed with ME/CFS too easily, and it's not what I really have. It's all very messy and complicated, but basically people hung onto one symptom that I had when I first had the virus and kept insisting that I still suffered from it even though I didn't!!

I did hear about the young boy, my heart goes out to all those involved.

I've had quite a busy few days got lots of maths to get completed- supposedly by Wednesday, but I've managed to get an extension because of the problems with my chest (which have nearly gone I only bark a few times a day:D ) and am collecting plastic bottles to make rain gauges from for my science course. Plus the engineer from REMAP (charity) came round the other day, they're going to build me a new top for my desk so that I can have my arms supported when I'm sitting here, and he's going to look at getting a clamp made so that I can have two hands to do my cross-stitching, which is all rather exciting for me.

Copper have you had any progress with sorting things out for your Mum?

Not long till the weekend now:) Hope you're all doing OK and things are getting sorted out.

Claire it is reassuring to know you finally have a diagnosis - well done you worked so hard to get it.

Had a good week back at work. Some kids this morning told me I am their favourite teacher which I take with a pinch of salt (probably say it to everyone) but as they came over especially to tell me it was nice. Put up a display which I had put together myself - so chuffed with that as it is quite cool.

Kids are well - eldest seems to have developed a rather wicked sense of humour and makes me laugh quite often with it.

Also booked some flights to go to Iona at Whitsun which is quite exciting.

Gosh its late must go to bed.

My mother has a bath board which she is not that happy using. She finally got the bath taps and shower removed after I had made several phone calls.

We are waiting for the new budget in April when she should get a new shower installed. I expect that means more phone calls from me.

No sign of an appointment to see a physio about her bad back to say nothing of an assessment for a walking aid.

There is only so much :headbang: one can take.

cnc
12-01-2008, 07:05 PM
I don't blame her, I'm not allowed a bath board, because they think I'll fall off it. All this talk of budgets is absolute rubbish, I can't believe they're still getting away with that excuse. Have you tried the District nurse, and I know in this are there's a 'Safer homes' scheme that provides things like perching stools and shower chairs for people who don't have access to an OT or district nurse.

I ended up seeing a private physio as the NHS were quite happy to leave me unable to stand (and therefore walk) for 4 months whilst they got a physio. It's so frustrating, and even when you're actually in the system it isn't much faster. It takes so long to get anything done.

I know its more paperwork but there are some grants avaliable to help people who need to adapt their houses. Have social services seen her yet?

I know how you feel it is such an infuriating system, but I must say that without the system I certainly wouldn't be able to live here so although it does have its failings it can also be wonderful.

Rebecca I hope you have a lovely trip and I'm glad the children at the school like you:)

Copper
12-01-2008, 08:17 PM
My mother lives in a housing association bungalow - ex council. This is where the talk about budgets started. We are waiting for the social services to get a new budget in April. The housing association have no money for this work so they say.

The trouble here is that there are so many oldies as people think this is a great place to retire to. I am sure it is until you need something.

If they get on my nerves enough I will go back to see the nice man at the CAB.

cnc
13-01-2008, 10:41 PM
It infuriates me that they're still allowed to use that as an excuse.
It's a bit of a different situation here, apparently young people aren't allowed to have health problems, and need assistance, everything is geared for older people. Most of the help for young people is aimed at those with learning difficulties or mental health problems, trying to get support for those with physical disabilities is hard work, although I think this is a problem for anyone who isn't either elderly or born with these problems- there's a significant number of people who fall into the middle and the support doesn't seem to be there either. Maybe I need to swap with your mother, there seems to be load of help for older people here!!

I hope that you get things sorted, I was talking to my aunt tonight and we were saying it's ridiculous the amount of paperwork and length of time it has taken us both to get things sorted (she was involved in a serious road accident 18 months ago) in relation to these kinds of things,

Another busy week ahead, finally back to hydro on Monday, and then hospital on Tuesday. Need to get these applications finished as well, and chase up some paperwork, but that involves phone calls, so I'm putting that off for as long as possible. Think I shall take a detour into the shops tomorrow:D

5.30 this morning it was back - what ever is coming into our loft sounded to me as though it was rolling one of the Christmas baubles along the floor. It sounded to be having fun, pity we wern't below. We've been in the loft this morning but couldn't see anything. It must have put whatever it was playing with back in the box:lol2: Not funny at 5.30 I can tell you.

Went into work for a little while yesterday but came home at dinner. Been to dr's this morning as my energy levels are very low which isn't like me at all. He wants me to go back and have some blood tests so i have to go on Monday morning, not having had any breakfast. Self certified myself sick for the rest of the week. Dr did speak of signing me off, but mad as it seems I need to go into work, as stopping at home doing nothing isn't good either. Even If i just go in and sit and do nothing at least i'm getting out the house and there are people I can talk to - some are ok. Boss is being very helpful and wants to help me through it......

Thanks for the info on painkillers a few days back. I have tried Tramadol but they make me sick:angry:. I've got an appointment on Monday to discuss it with my GP.

Claire - I did hydro at our local hospital for a while but the getting there and back on the bus made it not really worth the effort! Hope it's going well for you.

Jill - sorry to hear about your problems. I suffered with major stress some years ago so I know what it's like. I was off work for quite a while. Hubby has a problem with stress at present and it's causing all sorts of hassles here. I haven't been on the site much over the last few months as things have been a bit nutty here! Hope you feel a lot better soon!

jill
17-01-2008, 09:39 PM
Yes I hope it passes soon. I don't like feeling like this, but least i'm doing something about it. Family illness can't be helped and as our relatives get older you expect them to have hiccups. Problems with work should have been sorted out years ago. If by me speaking out and being off for a while gets things sorted so that no one else has to suffer then it may be worthwhile eventually. Just need everyone else to start speaking out now. I'm being sensible and resting as much as I can. Hopefully blood tests will show something so a quick fix will give me a boost.

I have thought of traps for the loft, I even suggested to Paul that he goes and sleeps up there tonight - he says not. Whimp, just because its freezing up there. Mind you, I wouldn't either.

Anybody got any good news?

Penny
17-01-2008, 09:55 PM
Hi Jill

Yes, I've had a good day.

My middle child represented his school as part of a quiz team today in the regional heats of a national competition and they did really well. Unfortunately they did not win, but they hung onto their lead right up until the last. They are the smallest school in the borough with only one class to a year group, so they did really well. It was nice for him to have a chance to shine as his sister is very bright and he is often in her shadow and Merrick of course gets lots of attention due to his allergies. I think Jacob gets a hard time being in the middle.

Merrick is over the moon that I've found an alternative to his Trufree biscuits, all be it more expensive:(.

It's nice when things go right for a change. I too have had lots of stress in my life recently. My father and brother both died within 9 weeks of each other and although it was 2 years ago now, I am still trying to sort out their estates, so I can sympathise with the stress and sleepless nights! I usually save those for another forum I post on.

Anyway, hope you're soon feeling better and work sort things out.

Apparently I had a good nights sleep. Paul says I was snoring so bad he thought of coming downstairs - I can't have been that bad else he would have done. Only a slight sound from the loft at 5.46 this morning so it wasn't so bad. I've nipped up there to see for any evidence but there was nothing. I've put 2 cardboard tubes up there so we'll check tomorrow and if they've been nibbled hopefully there will be some evidence so we know where to put any traps.

Feeling a bit better today, my minds alot clearer, i'm just getting tired so easily so i'm making sure I rest as much as possible.

Well done to Jacob in his quiz Penny, I believe middle children do have it hard at times. My eldest sister was bright and because I being the third was the "baby" of the family my middle sister said she felt it.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Well done to Jacob.
Things have been fairly quiet round here (for a change!!).
Rest is important Jill, I know it can get quite boring, but it's for you own good in the long run. Take care of yourself and make sure you make plenty of time for yourself.
I'm going to London on Wednesday to meet with various people to see if it's worth me applying to do my Masters. So I'm slightly terrified at this prospect (and having girly stresses like what to wear!!) but also excited as I really want to do this course and I'm hoping that if I can get to speak to those involved they won't dismiss my application quite so readily because of my problems and will see beyond the piece of paper.

Edit: I've just had some very exciting news, a very good friend of mine is coming to stay tomorrow. I'm extremely excited, like a small child on Christmas morning, excited!!. We've not seen each other for about 6 months, so we're both rather giddy and excitable. We only decided this about 30 minutes ago so it's all last minute and adding to our sense of general excitement. She's bringing her fiancé as well- I've told them it's not official until I've vetoed him (he was living in Wales, so we've never been able to meet), so it should make for a very good weekend.
I hope you all have as wonderful weekends.

Hope you had a good weekend Claire with your friends, sounds like lots of fun and excitement for you at the moment. Hope it all goes well on Wednesday with the Masters.

Managed a trip into town today and bought a few bits. I'm keeping myself occupied, and rested, by going through all of my housey magazines ripping out bits that I like for ideas for our house renovation. Not as tired today, but i'm not rushing things.

No noises last night from the attic and the cardboard rolls were still intact when they were checked this morning.

Happy Belated New Year PA, was wondering where you were. Hope you're feeling better soon.

I've started moving some of my craft things out of my craft room into another bedroom as the roof has started to leak again and I don't want anything getting damaged. Normally I would have got it all moved in no time but I'm taking it easy, no point in over doing things, I could tell when I'd moved a few bits as I was breathing funny. Hope the blood tests reveal something as otherwise it will be out with the shot gun :lol2:.

Still quiet on the attic front.

I went to the craft store yesterday Copper and didn't buy myself anything (must be ill), spent money on bird food instead. They still amuse me, quite looking forward to spring again. I've got a couple of recent additions to add to our family tree and another one due in February, haven't done any research for ages.

I hope things get sorted for you soon Jill. Just remember to take it easy, stress can cause a lot of problems, and take longer than people think to get back to 'normal'. Be kind to yourself (that goes for all of you!!)

I need to get back on top of my studying as well at the moment, need to get the deadlines put somewhere prominent so that I get motivated to do something.

Thanks for the advice Claire, Today has been my first full day back at work, past two days i've just gone in when I woke up and left at my usual time. I am feeling alot better already, can't believe how bad I was last week. I know alot of it was definetley down to stress caused by work, so I am taking it easy. Still got to wait for my blood test results though to see if there is anything physical that causes me to get so stressed. I'm looking on last week as a turning point and a lessen - I don't want to get that bad again. I came across some more self-help positive thinking books in Aldi on Sunday so bought 3 of them - they were only £1.99 each.

Hope today went well for you Claire. You obviously enjoy your studies.

I hope you get some answers soon, but don't get stressed about it:) You've been through a lot so it's not surprising you've suffered for it. Do you have an outlet for your stress?

Yesterday went well, am pretty ill now, but it was all very exciting (apart from the fact that I was nearly left on the train because no-one had been told I was on the train), and they seemed quite geared up to working with my needs, seemed quite supportive in general. It looked like they had a good set-up as well. The commute is the only problem, but they're hoping that we can get some taxis and things paid for me to help cut down on that side of things. Just need to wait for my referee to get back from the Antarctic and get my references written and then I can apply, it's all very scary.
I've just started my new courses, so was out this morning sticking plastic bottles in the soil for rain gauges, I predict the driest two weeks Cambridge has ever seen now!!

Am going to try and do some crafting stuff tonight, my hands are still refusing to work very well so it could be interesting, but I'll give it a go:)

Take care all.

I am really pleased for you Claire. Yesterday sounds like a very positive day.

Perhaps I should make some rain gauges for here :lol2: My garden is saturated and the soil is very sandy

I have snowdrops and crocus in full bud. Some daffodils have buds too. The camellia next door has been flowering for a couple of weeks. The birds are not fooled though.

jill
25-01-2008, 06:20 PM
I noticed my snowdrops for the first time yesterday, it was still light when I came in from work tonight so I had a walk round the garden to see what else is out.

Talk of rain gauges reminds me of one of the jobs we do at work. We have to measure the rainfall for different sites and analyse the deposits for metals. Had a good day today, took a few CD's in and was quite happy singing to myself. Blood tests have shown nothing up which is a good thing. Just have to think of myself, which I am doing. The main trouble maker is off at the moment for another 2 weeks so we'll have to see what happens if and when she comes back.

Got loads of washing to do as I've got quite a bit of a back log. Hair cut tomorrow - i'm thinking of having a change as its starting to be a bit messy. Nothing else planned, going to have a soak in the bath with some candles in a bit.

Hope you get plenty of rest in Claire after yesterday - crafting sounds a good idea.

Happy Weekend everyone.:)

Sounds like a good day Claire. I'm not surprised that has knocked you back a bit, I find a day in London tiring without all the difficulties you face. I am glad they had a supportive attitude, I had hoped they would.

Jill, enjoy the 2 weeks without the trouble maker. Someone was making trouble for me in October and I put a different quote in my diary every day for a few months ahead. (from a website) It is a bit twee I guess but I find it really appeals to how I think. They have made me smile or think every day since. I have to face her again on a trip next Friday but I know I can deal with her because I know I dealt with the whole situation better than her and with more grace and humility. She gets herself in such a state and rants away so much no-one takes her seriously (not even the kids). A few weeks ago she walked past me and blanked me completely - It does make me laugh because she is very religous and I am the opposite. Some people where I work think atheists have no morals. Such tolerance!!!

Thoroughly enjoying work at the moment. Still frustrating that I cant work to my full ability till the boys are older, but although its low status and has significant limitations I do really enjoy my job and my boss really appreciates when I go the extra mile. Youngest is excited about his birthday next week and is driving me nuts. Starting to organise my 40th, I have found a cute picture of me when little to go on the invite, once I get it on the computer maybe I should put it as my avatar for a while.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. I'm feeling loads better in myself. Going shopping to Lincoln tomorrow with my mum and sister who is over again from Belgium. Good news today, mum is responding well to her treatment.

At least that is one less mouse Copper. We haven't heard anything for at least a week from our attic. So hopefully Paul scared it off when he went up to investigate the noise one morning at 12.30am. The cardboard tubing hasn't been touched either.

Managed to spend a bit of time in the garden yesterday, tidying up so that the bulbs come through better. Won't be long before we've got some daffs out.

Finally we got rain!! I must be the only one excited about it, but I need results!!

Glad your mum is responding well to her treatment Jill. How was the shopping?
I decided to treat myself to a haircut and colour yesterday, as I've been sulking because of my allergies recently (these kicked off back in December when I had a chest infection). Am on yet more new medication and am currently banned from being in contact with anyone with chicken pox or measles, which is quite amusing as I don't actually leave the house very often!! It seems to be responding finally which is rather good news. Also heard from a friend I'd not been in contact with for about 6 months which was lovely, and am currently trying to track down another friend who I've not been in contact with for about 7 years.....

Hope you're all doing well.

Your rain gauge would have got some hammer today if it was located up here Claire. The weather was so bad up here this morning one of the windows fell out at work, set the fire alarm off and the fire brigade had to come. I missed all the excitement as it happenend about 7am. Guess you are doing one of the science based OU courses. I did T172 a couple of years back and I think i had to do a rain gauge on that. I do like studying but haven't got the required time to spare at the moment. Hope you manage to track down your friend.

Shopping day was nice, treated myself to some undies and picked up a T-Shirt for £1.00. Supposed to be £5, reduced to £2.50 then when I got to the till it was reduced even more. Pity they didn't have anymore. Discovered Lincoln have got another Cafe Nero so I had 2 drinks of coffee made with Soya Milk -I don't normally drink Coffee - so its nice to have a hot drink when out shopping.

Going out tomorrow night to an Italian Restaurant which I've been to before. I've just phoned them up to let them know about being intolerant and they are quite happy to accomodate. I'm having Chicken breast stuffed with white wine, garlic and prawns in a tomato sauce with a tower of rice, its also served with vegetables and potatoes. It was rather delicious last time I went so i'm looking forward to it. If I remember right they had a coconut sorbet on the menu as well so I might try that - was too stuffed last time so i'll give a starter a miss. There are about 20 of us going to celebrate a friends 50th Birthday.

My nose has been really bad since the steroids I took at xmas wore off. I have been trying to keep my chin up but it is really starting to get to me.

Work are going out tonight but I cant face it, so blocked up every time I swallow it makes a disgusting noise.

It's making work very tough.

If I dont managed to get it better It'll mean another operation - but as they only work for a few months its not the most enticing prospect. Cant live like this though.

Booked to go back to accupuncture and am hoping that may help and also doing my breathing exercises which normally do something.

Sorry about the moan

jill
31-01-2008, 06:52 PM
Its ok to moan rebecca, i've had 2 days of it at work. I went back feeling refreshed and happy after my shopping trip to be greeted by 3 moaning fellas. Trying to just let it wash over me but it has a knock on effect.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Sorry to hear you're still not doing well Rebecca, I hope it improves soon. Are you still being seen by the hospital?

How are things going back at work Jill, try not to let them drag you down.

Well I've had a bit of bad news, I'm losing my home, because my landlady is selling up. I don't know how long I've got here, but am hoping I've got long enough to get the council to re-home me. People keep saying I should be a highish priority because of my health needs, so we shall see, but it's not exactly the best timing!!

Has anyone got anything planned for the weekend?

jill
02-02-2008, 09:51 AM
Oh Claire, i'm so sorry to hear you have to find a new place, and you haven't been in that one very long (unless i'm mixed up with someone else here?) Hopefully you'll find somewhere soon that meets all your needs. Guess thats a job for first thing on Monday then, getting onto somebody so they can get you sorted.

Things aren't too bad at work at the moment. I went in yesterday and said its friday, we don't want any moaning and we've got a week without the trouble maker and our boss so lets have a bit of a laugh. What the fellas were moaning about I sympathise and agree with but the negativity can get to you sometimes. Quite looking forward to next week for the above reasons and I'm doing a job which will take me all week to do, so I can really get stuck into it.

Meal was very nice last night, must admit the chicken wasn't quite as good as last time I had it, but at least I know the restaurant takes care with my food. As Paul had to be up at 4.30am he drove, which meant I had a couple of drinks which made a nice change.

Haven't got anything planned for the weekend, just chilling at the moment whilst the washer is on. Can't decide whether to go out or get stuck into the decorating. When you actually type it out I think going out seems like the better option. Weather isn't too bad here so I maybe ought to make the most of going out before we get snowed in.

Hope everyone is ok and the weather isn't affecting you too much.

Claire I am sorry. My neice is severly is disabled and it has taken a while but they now have a house where they wanted one and some money to extend it so they can all fit in and she can get from room to room in her wheel chair. They still have to do the building work but for them the end is in sight. I hope you get sorted soon too.

I am not going to the hospital at the moment, I didnt manage to progress the diagnosis much further but my GP is helping me to do some blood tests to try to extend our knowledge of the facial swellings. If my nose doesnt settle I will have to sign back in with the ENT team. Fingers crossed I can get back in control I have before but it is really bad at the moment.

I am thinking of getting a steam cleaner for the house- does anybody have one or know anything about what might be best?

Well I've sent in my forms to the council this morning so I shall see what they say. Someone also suggested getting my local councillor involved if the council aren't particularly helpful, which may well be something to consider, because generally a bit of bad publicity makes people move a bit faster!!

Sorry I was going to respond to people but someone has just turned up to feed me.

Copper
04-02-2008, 08:14 PM

Welcome back Goose, long time since we heard from you.

04-02-2008, 10:01 PM
I was going to give the council a chance, I'm not that mean, but it's always useful to have a bit of a back-up plan (plan c is currently win the lottery!!).

Just rather unfortunate that on a Monday and Tuesday I get fed at 4.30, which is a bit early for dinner, the rest of the week I normally get fed about an hour later which is much better, but mustn't grumble, as otherwise I would starve!!

Glad you're feeling a bit better Rebecca, nasal problems aren't much fun are they.
I'm dosed up on Piriton and some weird nasal spray that means I can't be in contact with anyone with measles or chickenpox!!
Oh and the only experience I've had with a steam cleaner is using it to clean clothes, I guess it's the same principle though, if I remember correctly it was quite a heavy/bulky machine, and I think I spent a lot of time getting accidental steam burns. I seem to remember it being quite noisy as well, like a steam iron but louder and more continual. It wasn't the nicest thing to do for several hours at a time.

Nice to see you again Goose:)What's the new job?

That is a rather sweet picture Rebecca. I hope you have fun organising your party.

I've just about finished the seemingly endless masses of paperwork I had to do, which is good. Hopefully I'll get some more details through from the council about housing and fingers crossed I'll get something soon.
Am furious with landlady at the moment as it is, they're having the driveway tarmac'd which is fine, but they didn't bother to tell us when it was happening, we have no idea of how long the work is going to last, whether there's going to be an access problem etc... I think she may well have broken the contract by doing this, but I really don't have the strength to fight it at the moment.

I've had to risk taking a tablet with lactose in today, which is slightly worrying, but I'm full of lactase enzyme and piriton so I should be OK. The tablet was the only option (other than having it done via IV, which I really don't fancy!) and it was quite important that I had it. I don't seem to have had a problem yet which is good.
Oh and the battery in the smoke detector needs replacing, but I can't reach it, and I'm in on my own, so it's been beeping for the last 3 days now, waiting for someone taller to come and do something about it!!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend:) I'm going to a science tutorial which I'm quite excited about.

jill
09-02-2008, 10:10 AM
Hope you enjoy the tutorial Claire, and you've managed to have enough rain for your gauge. Doesn't sound like your having much fun with your accomodation at the moment.

I've been knocked off my feet again by some sort of cold, I won't say its flu like a man would, but I spent all of yesterday either in bed or laid on the settee. Paul says i must be ill as i'm not singing to the adverts.

Had some good news on the mum front on Thursday. The consultant says that the MRI suggests that the tumour has gone completely. Another session of chemo on Thursday, hysterectomy, 2 more chemo sessions. Then fingers crossed it will all be over. Lets hope they are correct.

Copper
09-02-2008, 11:57 AM
Claire, I hope you manage to get the beeping smoke alarm sorted out soon as it must be annoying.

I hope that you enjoy the science tutorial.

Jill, good news about your mum. Bad news having a cold. Colds don't stop me from doing anything but these weird viruses do. Perhaps you have not got a common cold but a weird virus.

I had a letter this week telling me that I have to do jury service at the end of March. Oh goody. I will be taking plenty of food that I know I can eat. I had better keep the fluid intake low or the court will be rising for me to visit the loo :lol2:

jill
09-02-2008, 02:33 PM
I've done the jury service bit, and stopped the court for the loo. Thing is when I stopped it everyone else was relieved so they could go aswell. The court did stop rather quick so don't start worrying if you need to go.

rebecca c
09-02-2008, 09:48 PM
Clare - make sure you do get someone else do the alarm. Dont even be tempted.

Copper - I have never done jury service, my husband has. He found it quite frustrating as a trial would just get started and then be thrown out on lack of evidence. So take plenty of good reading material - cross stitching etc.

Jill - I am glad that your Mum's tumour has gone. It seems to happen a lot that when a pressure or responsibility is removed people get ill, I bet you that is what has happened to you.... Your body is telling you to rest let it rest and dont feel guilty.

My nose is still unpleasant but I think there are longer periods of OK ness. Still horrid at night but it is not affecting my sleep. actually I am sleeping like a log on the sofa bed. My husband came in the other night to turn the internet on and I had a chat with him, he talked to me about it in the morning and I really couldnt remember anything about it.
Still very keen to avoid another operation. I shall see how it is in 2 weeks time.

Youngest got a medal at football this morning for being a brave goaly in a pile up. His quite a handful at the moment, testing the boundaries. His always very good at school though and thats the main thing also he is buddying a boy with behavioural problems - he is doing it very well and I am proud of him. I do worry about him taking too much responsibility though especially as I had to take too much when I was his age.

jill
10-02-2008, 07:45 AM
I think me being rough again is all down to one of my bosses spreading his cold around, and as i haven't managed to pick myself up fully from a couple of weeks ago its set me back again. I'll get there eventually. Still got a couple of months to get through with my mum. If need be i'll see about getting signed off sick for a couple of weeks to get me built up again.

I'm sleeping on the sofa bed at the moment, Pauls had 3 days of getting up at 4.30am so i'm able to get a little more rest that way. Woke up around 6ish this morning though, thats why i'm on here so early, hopefully i'll drop off again soon.

Yesterday I decided to tidy the garden as the sun was shining. After 3 hours the whole garden looks very good. I ache today :) The cat helped me by sunbathing and directing operations.

I have to dawdle round Tesco this afternoon with my mother as it is her shopping week. I am always tired after helping my mother with her shopping. I think that this is because nearly everything she wants is on a top shelf. I have to stretch or climb up shelves to reach things.

Had a very good day with my nose yesterday with some airway a lot of the day. Worse again today but the general trend is better. I did yoga last night and at them moment that seems to make my nose temporarily worse.

My son is off sick today so I have done some catching up.. Hope to go and clean the bathroom now if I can finally pluck up the energy.

Cleared out a cupboard this morning and turned it into an art cupboard. A book I ordered has arrived which will help me make string bags - for no known reason I decided I wanted to give this a try.

I've had a couple of good lie ins whilst on the sofa bed. I've taken the past two days off work sick to help me get over this coldy thing. Feeling alot better and am going into work tomorrow but have got an awful cough now, medicine I got from chemist seems to make it worse. Sunday night i was ill with my belly - just like when I used to be when I used to consume dairy. All I can think it was is the lactose in the ibrupfrofen. I normally have no problem popping a couple of painkillers but I guess with not having had much of an appetite its caught me out.

Made a birthday card today for my hairdresser who is 40 next week. Quite pleased with how it evolved. Good luck with the string bags rebecca - brings back memories of one my nana made when I was younger.

Sent my son back to school, but had to pick him up as he wasnt better.

Dog is at the vets overnight becuase she was very poorly (her neck is very painful) so they needed to give her morphine and bring forward the Xrays I had booked her in for to tomorrow. Hopefully we will know more after the Xrays as this is the third bout of this painful neck and it is much worse this time. She is being very good and sweet. What is amazing is how she very gently makes it clear to me that she is ill, she lay at the bottom of the stairs yesterday until I gave her some medicine. A lesson in assertiveness. It makes me sad to think of her away from us at the vets. (Got insurance thank goodness) the vets are superb - wish I got care like she does.

Poor dog :( I hope the vet can make a diagnosis soon. I hope that your son is better soon too.

I have had a few packets of dairy free chocolate buttons in my fridge for a few months. Last night I decided to treat myself. I ate two buttons and decided that I didn't really like them. I then looked at the list of ingredients and read this " 21% " soya" I think that is pushing my soya intolerance too far. Good job I don't like them then. I seem to be busy with family history related projects. My desk has a pile of paper on it again. I must try and tidy some of it away.

I have been experimenting with some coloured wire and a wire jig. I can make pretty shapes in wire. I just need to find out the best way to attach my wire shapes onto card.

My magnolia stellata is just coming into flower  It usually flowers in March. I think that shows how mild it has been down here this winter.

Everything in the garden is growing well and it looks quite colourful.

We have been to Sainsburys - shock horror. My husband treated me to some free from goodies. I have sampled some Sainsbury free from bakewell tarts. I remember sinking my teeth into a nice soft bakewell tart before my lactose intolerance got really bad. These free from tarts are hard! They also only have a hint of almond. I don't think that I will be buying them again.

I love magnolia stellata. all my little iris reticulatas are out now, nothing in my garden seems particularly early. Been trying to find a nice frock for my party - nothing as nice as a dress I got last year so I think I may wear that with some new accesories, (pashmina and shoes - nice necklace maybe) feeling guilty about buying these - heaven knows why.

nose is a bit up and down. Have monday and tuesday off so may try to do some cleaning to get on top of any dust which may be making it worse. Have changed to using hankies which has cleared up sore skin problem - skin looks great. Just need to sort my nose out now and I could actually be really well.

Dog is better from her flare up, thank goodness. She has been so good throughout it all Think she will be having accupuncture soon as well as me.

Had a good half term with the boys and a nice few days at my parents. Found a nice cheap art shop so the boys have been doing a bit of art for a change (we used to do loads) Also found a good builder - major acheivement that one. I keep forgetting to come in here... Plus I've been quite busy with Rotaract things. Or I would have been busy except that last time I went to the big Tescos I found some really mango and passionfruit ice cream which is really nice. Except that it makes me ill - I've eaten most of the tub before narrowing it down to that.

I'm sure it's not the soya in it that's doing it and I don't know what it is because there's nothing on the list of ingredients that I'm definitely intolerant to. But it made me quite ill on Monday and then I spent the rest of the week recovering from it.

On the plus side I've found one of the shops in town that's practically next door to where I work sells DMC threads, which is handy. And the local Sainsburys sells chocolate buttons, as does the big Tescos further away. I actually have so many now, from buying them whenever I see them that I didn't buy every packet I could see in Sainsburys last week!

I have sampled some Sainsbury free from bakewell tarts. I remember sinking my teeth into a nice soft bakewell tart before my lactose intolerance got really bad. These free from tarts are hard! They also only have a hint of almond. I don't think that I will be buying them again.

I recently bought some bakewell tarts from Morrisons, and they were very hard. I was tempted to take them back to the shop, but I couldn't be bothered so I ate all four hard ones. It was the pastry more than anything. I have tried free from bakewell tarts from various stores and to be honest none of them have been that brilliant but they have been okay for a bit of a change. Maybe the manufacturer has problems and needs informing. Can't imagine that there are lots of different places making free from bakewell tarts, on checking the empty box in my recycling bin it doesn't give a manufacturers name so we can't compare.

My garden is starting to look quite colourful, 4 daffodils out so far, lots of crocus and snowdrops.

Rebecca don't feel guilty about treating yourself, I bought myself a new jacket yesterday from George at Asda, reduced to £10, exactly what I have been looking for, also got some new pants (also reduced). Things seem to be looking better for both of us - lets hope it keeps that way.:)

Went looking for a new car with Paul this afternoon, we were only meant to be looking but he bought one. Think it might have been down to me saying thats the one, I like the colour. Only joking, he likes it aswell. Same place and Salesman as where I bought mine from last October, so I get a cheque for £50 for recommending him - now what can I spend that on?:)

I have a bad back now. I have a couple of extra days off work so I thought I would do some housework - didnt get very far and now my back is fairly painful. I think it is carrying the dog round when she was ill which has actually damaged it but it has taken a while to flare up. Oh well, I have managed to find an osteopath who can fit me in tomorrow so hopefully that will solve the problem.

Sorry to hear that Rebecca, hope you get it sorted soon.
I've had some good news- I've been given an unconditional place to do my MSc in London in September, which is very exciting, I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple of other places, but at least I've been given one offer.
In other good news, I managed as well as swimming my normal couple of lengths with a float, I swam one in the medium speed lane, which is good as it means I'm getting stronger- I am making progress, it's frustratingly slow, but we're going in the right direction.
Apologies for not being around much recently, I've been having some seizure type episodes so I've been keeping a bit of a low profile to try and boost my health a bit. Things appear to have settled down a bit again now:) Still no progress on the housing front either, but I'm trying not to let it bother me. I'm seriously considering writing to the paper though about the lack of suitable housing for young people who need adaptation to their homes- nearly every suitable home in this city is sheltered accommodation and therefore only eligible for those over sixty. Young people with wheelchairs are probably a minority group, but we still deserve the right to have a suitable home (well I think we should be anyway!!)
Hope Monday is treating you all well.

I hope that your back improves soon Rebecca.

Claire, good news about the MSc and your swimming. I am sorry to hear that you have had some "turns". I hope that you don't get more of them.

It won't do any harm to write to the local paper. Maybe you will be flooded with housing offers. You can only hope.

Take care with your back Rebecca, they can be funny things.

Good news Claire with the MSc and swimming. Pity about the other problems which you can certainly do without. Hope you don't suffer too much with the seizures, rest is something I think we all need to consider more. Thing is we only tend to do it as a last resort when we have done too much.

I had my dental checkup yesterday and am not at all impressed with what my dentist says I need. I mentioned I was a bit concerned about how my gums are receding and my teeth are wearing away in a few places (old age and over brushing I expect) anyhow he put down that I need 8 fillings. I didn't realise this until I went to the receptionist to make an appointment. I asked what he wanted to do and that is what she said. I was absolutely gobsmaked, and in a bit of shock, I haven't made an appointment for the work, only to see the hygienist. Thing is i don't really now how to go about getting a second opinion. My dentist is NHS. If he had said I needed 1 or 2 then I wouldn't have queried it but 8. Most of my big teeth are filled anyway, I get the impression he wants to do some small white fillings but i'm not sure that they are necessary as i'm not in any pain, only suffer a little bit of sensitivity now and then but to be told this is a bit of a concern, particularly as I have been seeing him for years and nothing like this has been mentioned before.

Had my apprasil at work today - lasted nearly 3 hours - went really well, my boss isn't that bad after all (I suppose the more I say it it may eventually come true:lol2:). Quite looking forward to what she has got planned for me next year. Think i'm definetley ready for a bit of a change. Short notice trip to Manchester on Thursday, i'll take my own food as it will be easier.

Jill, 8 fillings!!!!! How could you have developed all of these holes since your last visit? I assume that you have been seeing this NHS dentist (a rare thing here) on a regular basis.

I think that you might have to contact your local PCT (Primary Care Trust) to ask them about getting a second opinion.

cnc
27-02-2008, 12:36 PM
That sounds very suspicious Jill. I know PALS work with patients and hospitals they might do the same thing for dental practices as well.
If the surgery has another NHS dentist you could maybe try them? Or you could possibly get a one off inspection from a private dentist (some aren't that expensive, especially if it's just for a check up) and see what they say?

I've already spent it on getting my windscreen replaced. It was damaged last night during the earthquake, when a wooden drawer fell from the loft space of the garage right onto the window. Did any of you feel it? The epicentre is only around 25 miles from where I live. I thought it was something running into the side of the house. I was still awake two hours later. Quite an expereience that I don't particularly want to go through again. Auto glass are coming to fix it on friday so i'm taking the day off work.

On the teeth front, I go to my NHS Dentist every 6 - 8 months. So if I need this much work doing then he should have said something before hand. All my big teeth are all ready filled so I don't know what type of fillings he had in mind. I have heard from several people that they think he does un-neccesary work but it is just proving it. I'll have to get a second opinion sorted.

cnc
27-02-2008, 07:30 PM
I had one of my teeth filled and I've no idea why, as it wasn't causing any problems, but the dentist was absolutely certain it was necessary. Second opinion definately sounds necessary Jill.

I wasn't particularly disturbed by the earthquake although I did wake up not long after it, so I probably felt it and didn't realise.

I've been offered a second MSc place today, which is very exciting, although I do now have to make a decision, but I know which of those two I want, and hopefully I'll hear about the other two soon and can make a final decision.

27-02-2008, 07:34 PM
8 fillings sounds like an awful lot! If he wasn't NHS I'd suspect him of wanting the money. You could always try getting a second opinion at a non-NHS dentist - they'd be happy to take your money.

I'm further away from the earthquake than Jill or Claire but it made my bed shake and woke me up. It was a bit scary at the time but was quite exciting to tell to people at work who slept through it - which I usually do with earthquakes.

jill
28-02-2008, 08:17 PM
One of my colleagues was really dissapointed that she slept through it, another ones husband thought that she had moved the bed! Hopefully autoglass won't take too long replacing my windscreen tomorrow.

More good news with the MSc Claire, hope you end up with your first choice.

Had a good trip to Manchester today. The woman I was going with took her SAT Nav which was quite an experience, as I drove. Very clever and useful when going somewhere different. Did end up getting a bit slightly confused and lost in the centre of Manchester though. Couple of right characters on the course which we had a good laugh about when we left.:lol2: Weekend has now started.:)

Claire - CONGRATULATIONS the MSc offers and the swimming are all excellent news. My brother is in accommodation in Cambridgeshire and is in old sheltered housing accommodation. If they dont have something suitable perhaps they could adapt a sheltered/ warden assisted unit for you. Once you became homeless you would move higher up the list of course but that is not a situation you can be in.

My back is on the mend. The dog is now being sick so I am giving her a rest from her medication and hoping that is all it is.

Jill, I agree with the others why would you suddenly need 8 fillings? I am very interested by the earthquake news.

I've now written to the local paper and sent a copy of the letter to my local councillor so am waiting to hear back from either of them. The council said that they will be able to do more when I get my notice to quit, but from searches I've done they don't appear to have suitable properties avaliable, so I'm not entirely sure what will happen. I'll probably end up in temporary accommodation somewhere for a while, but that's not really feasible as I'm not well enough to move twice in short succession. It's frustrating as those that will help, don't have the homes, and those that do have the homes (letting agents) won't help me.

Glad that your back is doing better now Rebecca. Hope your dog feels better soon as well.

Enjoy your weekend everyone:)

I hope you contacting the press has the desired effect Claire. I'm expecting to be in our local newspaper on Monday. I went to a protest this morning regarding the proposed closure of our fire station. I said a few words and had my photo taken, pity it was so cold and windy I bet i'll have a really bad hair day on the photo:lol2:. Turnout could have been better, but at least I know I have given them a little bit of support.

Finally got my windscreen replaced this afternoon, yesterday they turned up 3 hours late with the wrong one and couldn't do it as it was raining. They turned up again this morning but I was out at the protest as they said they were coming this afternoon, third attempt it was sorted.

Really busy at the moment - but good busy.

My back is better. went to see the editors on Thursday night. Took some of the kids to a days event at the uni on Friday which was a really succesful day. We were studying evironmental issues and food so I was able to help them a lot.

Got to get ready for my party and my sons is going on a school trip soon.

Next week is busy too with a trip to london for a special needs in geography course , all the way up in brent cross and a school trip to the natural history museum on Friday.

Someone in my yoga class comitted suicide earlier in the week and she has kids in both my childrens classes. This is terribly sad - I didnt know her well but I liked her. It has been quite upsetting for my youngest.

Nice to hear your back is better Rebecca, hope it keeps that way. What upsetting news to have to deal with.

Hope you have a good party, you certainly seem busy, lots of school trips. Enjoy them.

Mum had her hysterectomy op on Monday which went well, she is hoping to stay in until she has her 15 clips taken out on Tuesday. I'm hopefully going to stay with her for a few days when she first gets out as she won't be able to do much at all. Won't be long before her next chemo session either. Paul has got some kind of viral ear infection so he is really off it, has been sick and dizzy which isn't like him at all, so its a case of who needs me most. He should be feeling better by Tuesday though. Don't worry I am thinking of myself aswell - got a pedicure booked on Monday evening.

Got up this morning to see a chicken wandering round the garden, eating the bird seed, but also being chased by the neighbours cat. The chicken came right up to the patio doors so I asked it if it had come to lay me an egg for breakfast, but it didn't oblige.

Your mum certainly sounds like she could do with your help, it really is lovely to be taken care of when you get home from an operation. Although Pauls ear sounds bad too, being giddy must be difficult to deal with. My freind had that problem for quite a while. I hope he is better soon.

Rebecca, good news about your back. You must all be shocked by the sad death of the lady in your yoga class. I feel very sorry for her family especially the children.

Jill, you are certainly going to be kept busy with your nursing skils. Your mother will be fragile for a few weeks after that operation. That weird virus has been around for a few years around here. It sounds horrible as it affects your balance. As it is a virus there is nothing you can do but wait for it to go away.

Fancy seeing a chicken running around your garden - how bizarre. Where did it come from?

jill
11-03-2008, 05:36 PM
The chicken normally spends alot of time in my neighbours garden who lives across the road. It appeared last september and regularly lays eggs for them. I didn't realise it but it has started going in another garden down the street aswell, I don't mind if it is going to lay a couple of eggs for us. When I went to work this morning it was walking along the pavement so it must be wandering around quite a bit. Don't know where it came from originally but it seems to like it around here.

Mum came out of hospital last night. I went to see her at lunch and said I would stop for a couple of days but they said they will be fine. I've offered my services but if they can cope without my help then i'll let them get on with it, for a few days at least. No point in me wearing myself out if they are ok. Will just have to see how it goes. Paul is feeling alot better so that is good.

Enjoyed my pedicure, and have booked myself in for a manicure next thursday - I think i like my new years resolution- to think of me more. I'm doing well so far.

Things are going well at work for a change. Still need to get the dentist sorted and a little dent that I discovered in my bonnet which must have happened when my windscreen got smashed in the earthquake.

Hope the storms haven't caused any of you any damage.

Hope you have a nice party Rebecca.

Jury Service - Exciting - that isn't quite how I would describe my experience Copper, but each case is different. Look on it as a chance to meet some new people and have a new challenge. Also if it is in a different town, somewhere to go shopping.

I have been staying at my parents for the past two days whilst my car was in the garage, nice time and a chance to eat healthily for a couple of days without anything naughty to tempt me. My Mum is doing really well since her op 3 weeks ago. I reckon she should be resting more than she is, but she will only does as she likes. The consultant reckons the cancer has gone (fingers crossed) but she still needs a couple more sessions of chemo.

We had alot of snow on Sunday morning but I wasn't brave/daft enough to go out snowballing like the neighbours - i like to be warm.

We had two Goldfinches in our garden the other day, never seen them before so it was quite exciting, in a sad sort of way, finding them in my bird book.

Last year I saw a sparrow hawk sitting on my mother's neighbour's porch. Now that was very exciting. When we went to the tip the other week they had a sparrow hawk there. They use it to scare off the seagulls. It was sat on a man's wrist at the time. It is a beautiful bird.

Hi everyone
Just thought I would let you all kknow how I got on yesterday at the hosp with Noah. Met the consultant and dietitian and spent about hour with them. They then carried out the skin prick tests. They tested him for cows milk, soya, eggs and nuts. The results said that he was allergic to milk and soya. Of course I have been replacing all his milk products with soya !! They have put him on a complete dairy free diet and I have to go back and se him in 6 months. They gave me a milk for him Nutramigen but he spat it out and said he didnt like it!! So I gave him Rice dream and he seems t like that. But Im now stuck I am having problems getting food without both in it. Has anyone ideas or advice cause Im stumped and dont want him losing out.

Sinead - I dont have much advice on ready made food apart from going to your local health food shop. Doves farm do some biscuits. watch crisps carefully as they often sneak soya or dairy in.

Apart from that baking with pure (yellow sunflower pure has no soya or dairy) instead of butter works for most of us.

Rice dream is good because you can get it with added calcuim,

I had a great party although such as busy weekend has meant I caught a cold which turned to my chest so I am back on the steroids. For once I think that is a small price to pay as I had such a lovely time and my friends and family seemed to too.

Tomorrow I have an award to pick up for being a green teacher also one of the students will get an award so I think that will be a fun evening.

Copper
02-04-2008, 10:05 PM
At least you have some results and Noah is in the system now.

Other people here have been prescribed the Nutramigen milk for their babies who laso didn't like the taste. They had to use milk shake powder to hide the taste.

Hmm the dairy free is easier to deal with. You can get some things in the free from section in the supermarket. I am not sure how many are also soya free.

It is usually simpler to bake cakes etc. I use Vitalite which is also dairy free and cheaper than Pure.

Soya lecithins turn up in a lot of things which is annoying. I am lactose intolerant and have developed an intolerance to soya this year. Luckily for me I can tolerate the soya lecithins in chocolate etc but I would not push my luck with extra soya.

I am currently munching my way through a packet of hobnobs which are dairy and soya free.

Ice cream will be a problem too. I make my own using Supreme oat cream which is very thick. The oatly cream might work but it is not thick or as nice as the Supreme cream. Your local health food shop might be able to get some ice cream for you which is made with rice milk.

Good Luck with the move Claire and I hope your tooth settles down soon.

Had a couple of tense days last week as my mum had a fit/seizure when she went for her chemo. She had to stay in hospital for a couple of days for observation. Luckily the CT Scan didn't show anything so it was relief for the weekend. I've been telling her for weeks that she is doing to much but she won't listen. Hopefully this will have made her realise that she needs to be resting more.

We had some snow last night (about an inch) but it had all gone by this morning which I was pleased about. Hope we don't have any more as I am going to Coventry/Birmingham for a couple of days to the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC. It will be nice to have a couple of days away.

lovely sunshine today.

Went for an ENT appointment which was a little more helpful than I thought it would be but the Doctor made me laugh when she said had I tried a low salicylate diet. I said yes I had been for six years but I found her question amusing since when I was last in ENT about 6 years ago I asked the consultant about it and he basically said do what you want it has nothing to do with me. She has told me how I can access surgery more easily if I badly need it and told me to use the steroids for my nose too so that was helpful and she was quite pragmatic and supportive.

My husband says I should just go every few years and tell them what they are going to tell me on my next visit!!!!!!!

Planning on taking boys for a bbq in the woods tomorrow, should be good if I wrap up nice and warm.

Rebecca it sounds like you had a good Dr at the ENT clinic. At least you know you are dong the right things and you are in the system if you need extra help.

I think a bone density scan is just that - a scan of your bones and then they measure the bones from the scanned images. At least it is painless which is a good thing.

I guess that Claire will be off for a few days as she will no doubt have to get somebody to sort out internet access.

rebecca c
10-04-2008, 10:14 PM
I should think it will take Claire a little while to get sorted but I suspect she is more organised than most people.

bone density scan was a machine over a bed which scan my hip and lower back, can get the results in a few weeks.

Got a very drippy tap to sort out now, really annoying. The plumber I spoke to seemed to think it would be easier to change the whole tap than the washer as we couldnt get it undone when we tried a while ago. She is coming to look tomorrow. Problem is the tap is very difficult to get to. I see a nightmare ahead and we are generally useless at DIY type stuff. You would think in this day and age taps would be easier to repair.

My tooth has nearly settled down, just lots of bruising of the bone, so it's still rather tender (I'm sick of medicated mouthwash, it tastes disgusting!!)
I got offered a place at UCL as well, which I'm very happy about, but does now mean I need to make quite a serious decision as to where I want to go. I'm going to London to visit KCL on Monday, which hopefully will help.

I am ok. I have been very busy. I went mad last week and cleaned the inside of every window in the house. I also washed all the net curtains.

We have bought a Wii and I am trying to improve my games skills. I have a bad right shoulder at the moment, I think it is the way I sleep on it. I tried to play tennis on the Wii left handed today and was not too bad. I need to practise more.

I have made some new contacts in my family history research.

I've not been around much the last week as i've been searching the internet for a place where we can go for a girly weekend. My eldest sister suggested that when my Mum has finished her treatment the four of us had a few days together. We are going to a hotel in Nottingham, that has a spa and leisure complex, at the end of June.

I saw a Magpie in our garden for the first time on Sunday. I was busy watching a crow which has recently started coming when I saw this flash of black and white which landed. Both rather large birds, which I understand can take little birds, which I don't really like the idea of, but its nature and you can't really stop certain birds coming in the garden. The chicken is still visiting (which i've named Norman), the other morning it ran up to me when I went to put the bird food out. I can see this could be a bit of a problem when we want the patio doors open in the summer.

Had another facial last night - I think this is my best new years resolution yet.

Hope all is well and the sun lasts - its about time we had some decent weather.

Been enjoying the sunshine - glad everyone is OK.

I am well, really enjoying work at the moment. Mike has been sick with tummy bug my eldest is now down with it today so I guess its my turn next as youngest has already had it. Yuck.

My steam cleaner is coming next week, so I am looking forward to experimenting with it. We have now fully organised a house swap holiday with a family in Lyon in France.

Its lovely today but eldest is actually being sick I cant leave him really.

I hope that the family improves rapidly Rebecca, it's not fun is it.
I've been a bit quiet, as I've not been well- I ended up in A&E on Thursday after attending the Doctors to be told I was severely dehydrated and an ambulance was promptly called- they think that stemmed from a stomach bug and virus, so I'm feeling rather unwell at the moment, just pottering around and resting mostly, it's becoming very boring now though, but I'm slowly regaining my strength, which is good news.

How's the gaming going Copper?

Copper
26-04-2008, 03:47 PM
Rebecca, I hope that you and your family are well soon. It must be horrible to be last in line for this stomach bug, just waiting for it to get you.

Claire, it sounds like you have had a bad time too. Keep resting and build up slowly to doing as much as you were able to before this bug/virus hit you.

I used my brain a few weeks ago and pre-orderd the Wii Fit. This arrived yesterday and we had great fun with it. I have not had time to use it yet today as we have cleaned PA's car today. I then decided to spend a couple of hours weeding the garden and dead heading things, especially grape hyacinths otherwise they are like weeds.

Claire - I hope your recovery is speedy, keep drinking that water and as Copper says rest or at least do restful things.

Copper I cant see how you are going to need a session on Wii fit when you have been cleaning cars and gardening that sounds like quite enough to me.

Hi everyone hope everyone is well and enjoying the bank holiday wkend. Does anyone know of any chocolate that is dairy and soya free? Im having real difficulty finding any! and Ive just found out that Noah also has a slight reaction to nuts aswell but as usual doctor was as useful as a chocolate fire guard!!!!:(

I am decorating my kitchen. The walls need 3 coats of paint :(

Sinead, go to this site

http://www.alotofchocolate.co.uk/

and search their allergy chocolates. I secrhed for dairy and soya free. If you scroll down the page you will find Swiss Organica chocolate. The one with the blue wrapper tastes like Galaxy so Noah should like it. You might find the Swiss Oragnica in a health food shop or they might be able to order it in. Down here in the south the only supermarket to stock it is Waitrose.

I'm still decorating our front room, which we started before Christmas. Yeserday I gave the georgian window its final coat, today I want to start on the radiator and the walls need one more coat. Trying to get it all done before the weather gets too nice.

Bird activity has increased, we've got loads of crows coming now which I don't particularly like, but they are good to watch, they always keep looking round to see if anyone is watching. The chicken still visits on a daily basis.

I am having a spell of good health, long may it last. I have cut out even small traces of gluten and this seems to have a significant impact.

I am using my new steam cleaner this weekend, I am very pleased with it. It takes some of the hard work out of cleaning and makes the house feel a lot cleaner. It does not get carpets perfect but certainly shifts alot of dirt from them. Particularly good on tiles and glass.

It has been amazing weather. On Saturday we drove to Northamptonshire to watch a sealed knot reenactment of the battle of Naseby. This was absolutely great and the boys really enjoyed themselves.

Sinead - Montezumas dark chocolate is dairy and soya free but is very strong for most peoples taste.

I am still painting the kitchen walls. I should have them finished by the end of the week. I will then have three door frames to paint.

I went to a Sealed Knot battle many years ago and thought it was brilliant. A group of pikemen marched past me in the square, Wimborne, Dorset. The pikes looked sharp and I would not want to be on the wrong side of one of them.

It is good to hear that you are feeling well Rebecca.

Our bank holiday weather was showery. I didn't feel so bad about neglecting the garden.

The other day a crow came into my garden and tried fishing in the pond! It caught one of my precious ramshorn snails. A greenfinch has just discovered the seed feeder. A robin is doing a grand job of keeping the greenflies off my climbing rose. A blackbird has bulit a wonderful nest in my garden. Just as she was finishing our cat decided to laze around and spotted activity. The male blackbird was most unhappy and so they have abandoned the nest.

Our bank holiday weather was absolutely gorgeous, and it has been like it again today. Could this be summer?

I abandoned the painting as it was so nice, I did manage the window and radiator but the walls need a bit more filling and sanding before they can be painted. I scarified the lawn instead, we have a blackbird nesting in our hedge so I won't be cutting that for a while yet.

I have painted two thirds of the kitchen walls.

Our cat was AWOL all day and appeared after the vets had closed. He has a very swollen leg and foot :( I feel a large vet bill coming on. He is not in any pain, he is happy and eaten his late tea. He will be going to the vet tomorrow.

Copper

Update on our cat. The vet thinks he has been stung by a bee! The bill was much bigger than I had anticipated - £76.20
I need a lie down now :)

Oh well back to the decorating. I would much rather sit in the garden as it is such a lovely day. I intend to do some weeding later and the cat will probably come out of hiding and help me.

Lovely day again, pity I was stuck in doors. Paul has got today and tomorrow off so is busy in the garden - moving bricks and stone so he can do some concreting.

Don't worry about me doing too much Claire - I've learnt my lesson and certainly take things alot easier than I used to. Pleased to hear your new home is better.

I have had a madly busy week and have 3 busy weeks coming up. The weather is so relaxing and my garden is looking completely lovely.

I had a good week a work except for some shinanigans where someone else has been accepted for the teacher training I was interested in. Its a long story and could easily be understandable but I am also of the opinion that a robust equal opportunities policy would have meant it did not happen. Also the uni have been rude to me on the phone and this is a second occurance so I have had to complain.

Trying to keep myself steady through this as I do tend to get worked up about this kind of thing.

My boss has been excellent and is going to try to get me a pay rise and I am getting ever increasingly good responses from the students.

My boys have had a good week and my eldest has shown some real maturity (choosing not to go to the park with his friends one night so he could do his homework.) My youngest was bullied last week but tonight the boy came round to play and they had a nice time.

Health is still good - so on balance things are very good, its a shame some people havent quite got to grips with the fact that women would like careers and jobs too. I guess too there is always an element of right time and place in these things and things may well work out for the best.

jill
09-05-2008, 09:13 PM
I'm pleased things are going ok Rebecca. The dissapointment with the teacher training post and the rude person are cause for getting a little wound up - it is so easily done, but it is only you who is affected in the end. Trying to keep calm is the best thing.

Things are going well for me at the moment. Work is relaxed with no one causing any trouble, very busy, but no distress for me which is very good. The trouble maker wanted to come back but she has been told she has to do her 6 months away. To be honest I don't think I'm ready for her to come back yet, so a couple more months of her not being in the department will give me chance to get back to where I should be mentally.

Nothing planned for the weekend, not as bright today so I hope the lovely weather isn't over.

Copper
09-05-2008, 10:35 PM
I have finished painting the kitchen walls. I just have the gloss painting left and a window and door frame to varnish. The end is in sight.

The cat's leg and foot are a normal size again. He loves his tablets :)

PA phoned this morning to tell us she is ill. She has a virus which affects her inner ear. She can't move without going dizzy and being sick :( Luckily her GP prescribed some sea sickness tablets which dissolve under the tongue. A friend was able to go to the chemist and collect the tablets and deliver them to PA. We had another phone call from PA this evening to tell us that the tablets work.

I think that you are doing really well Rebecca. I am sure that I would have been stressed with a rude uni and another person getting the teacher training post. Your day will come.

Jill, make the most of the two months at work with no trouble maker.

rebecca c
09-05-2008, 10:55 PM
Jill - Pehaps when she does return she will be more subdued, nobody can totally change but the situation may improve a bit.

Copper I have had friends who have had that kind of virus, horrible, I hope PA gets better soon.

I am planning to get a face shield so I can paint without getting specs all over my face - going to look a right nana though.

cnc
10-05-2008, 03:14 PM
Poor PA, dizziness isn't nice at all. Glad the tablets have worked.

I've had someone round to mow my lawn and pull up a load of weeds, and give my bathroom a good clean-there's some new charity thing called Hope 08 and volunteers come round and do tasks for people. Round here it's run by 3 of the local churches, and hopefully there will be other similar events as it seems to have gone really well, and I've made a new friend too:)

Need to catch up with my studying at the moment, nearly recovered after the virus, and the flat is getting closer to being sorted.

Sounds frustrating Rebecca, but you are right not to get stressed about it all, something will work out in the end.
Jill I hope that things improve when she does eventually return, maybe she'll have learnt her lesson.

Sorry to hear that PA isn't well. She hasn't been on the site for a while so tell her we hope she is better soon.

Good to hear that you get some help Claire and that you have made a new friend. I could do with someone to come and give my garden a good going over. I have just cut the grass so that looks alot better. Borders could do with a good tidy up. Daffodils are all dieing off but the bluebells are now just coming out so ill wait until they have finished flowering then have a good session.

I have seen the trouble maker on a couple of occasions in the last couple of weeks and we have exchanged pleasantries. The break has certainly given me breathing space to pull myself together.

As my youngest daughter said she was coming home next weekend, I have rushed around trying to get the kitchen finished. She phoned today and told us she will not be coming home until July, probably. I will have another room done by then.

The cat caught a male greenfinch today grrrrrr.

Claire, it is good to hear that things are going well for you.

I did some nice things this weekend. We went for a long walk on the downs and I took my son and his friend to see an unusual festival perfromance. It was an exploration of the quality of light in Brighton and included poetry, dance, performance, music and a horse!!!! The last was a massive shock especially as we were in a basement. Interestingly the boys enjoyed it as well as me...quite an arty pair but even so gives you some faith in the next generation.

I got my application done in case I do get a chance to apply for this course and if not its done for next time the chance comes up.

All in all very productive indeed.

I've been very bad at coming in here. And been very ill :) I had viral labyrinthitis, which is still making me dizzy. The doctor thinks I might have something with my back I can't spell or say that is very mild and will never go away. And I'm going to have a wisdom tooth taken out on 13th June, which I'd be far less worried about if they hadn't decided to tell me how they were going to do it.

15-05-2008, 08:20 PM
Welcome back PA. The wisdom tooth removal isn't that bad. I survived mine and I have super strong roots!!

I may find out if I'm actually allergic to milk soon as it has been tested as part of some RAST tests the ENT specialist is doing. He said they're not that accurate but it would be useful to see if anything else shows up- I really hope no more food turns up!!

Fingers crossed, cnc!

My tooth removal appointment has already been moved to the 20th June, due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. Or the hospital admin right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing, I suspect.

Copper probably won't be on for a week because their broadband has died, so they'll be existing on dial-up till midnight Tuesday.

PA - I hope everything is resolved as soon as possible. A friend of mine had the viral labyrinthitus so I know what you are going through to some extent.

I cant watch apprentice tonight as Mike is watching football.

Incredibly busy at the moment as I am going away with the boys and my parents on Saturday morning. But I am staying on top of my list - so that is great.

It was my eldest's birthday on Sunday and it went really well. I am still enjoying work and have got over the disappointment about the training, it hasn't had much impact on my feelings about the job but if anything similar were to happen again I may feel like withdrawing my goodwill with respect to all the work I do on a voluntary basis and just do my paid hours, not sure though.

The isp was less than helpful about mending our line, grrr. In the end it was fixed on Wednesday morning. I had started decorating another room so I had no spare time.

I missed you!!

I hope you complain to the company.

My new allergy medication is trying my patience, this wasn't the best time to change medication!! My flat is slowly looking like a house rather than a bombsite and my parents came to visit over the weekend which was nice.

I've been doing quite a lot of gardening recently as well, I love nature and I'm really excited about having things of mine to grow. I'm attempting to grow some fruit and veg as well as plants. I'm easily amused though!!

The isp are well known for their bad customer service. We are probably going to change to another isp. There is one which thinks that customer service is important.

We have two phone lines so we have ordered another isp on the second line. It is due to be activated today. We will be testing that out and if their customer service is as good as we think, we will change to them. The other isp will get the chop. Sadly that will mean changing email addresses. We have had the same addresses for years.

Glad to hear you are back up and running Copper.

I finally saw my dentist today who said that he only recommended that I had 7 fillings when I last saw him as I said my teeth were sensitive. Apparently they weren't proper fillings but a coating he could put on my teeth to protect them (buccle fillings). As I am not suffering i'm not going to have any of this done but I do need to have some root treatment done on one tooth. I saw the hygienist last week and it coincided with my gum being quite swollen so she recommended I saw the dentist. I'm not in any pain with it but an X-Ray showed there is something going on underneath so that is something not to luck forward to on June 23rd.

I've spent alot of time over the past couple of days clicking away with my camera. Bird activity is very high, lots of baby starlings. Only trouble is most of the photos need deleating straight away, thank heavens for digital.

I'm busy at the moment covering the poufee with some fabric to match my new curtains. I spent ages yesterday afternoon taking the old fabric off which was securely stapled on so I could use it as a pattern. Hopefully it will look good when its done.

Been busy at work but everything is going well. Time to ask for a pay rise as I am doing so much and a fair bit voluntarily but I dont think they will pay me more. Not very hot on CPD especially for Teaching Assistants who have a low status profile.

At the same time I have been trying to keep up with the tennis - Artois tournament. I am avoiding the football - yawn.

My garden is looking good too. I have bought a few solar lights to add interest. Two of them go through 6 colour changes except one is not working well. It was stuck on mainly red with a quick flash of blue yesterday. I will have to write to the supplier tomorrow and see what they say.

We are trying to get into serious house renovation mode. Things were beginning to move, had a builder round, made an appointment with the architect, they had to cancel, then they cancelled again but said they would be in touch after some big show they are doing next week. Think they have blown their chance. To cancel once is bad but twice. Am doing lots of searching on the internet for costs of things so we can set a realistic budget then decide the best way to go about it. Need to look for more architects who can take the job on - old stone cottage which dates back to 1720 so not a straight forward brick build. Going to have lots of fun and muck.

Going away next weekend on our pamper/shopping trip to Nottingham. My mum has now finished all her cancer treatment so we are meeting up with my two sisters. Looking forward to it.

All going ok at work. My garden is looking rather good - in places. Got goldfinches visiting now since I put some niger seed out. Not into sport so neither football or tennis appeals. I did go to Wimbledon when I was at school but I think that was more to get day off.

Had a lovely time in Nottingham (apart from some food issues - see other threads) could have done with another day so we could have made more use of the hotel leisure facilities. Was up at 7am both mornings in the swimming pool, had two pampering treatments and had some retail therapy in Nottingham, treated myself to some new clothes, bath products, make-up and some 72% Dark Chocolate from Hotel Chocolat - bit strong for me so it should last a while. I got 3 bars which are Mint Crisp, Almond and Orange, and Ginger

Back to reality now though - washing, food shopping and tidying the garden from the strong winds we had yesterday.

Have a busy week this week at work. I am realising how much I am ready to work more but the usual issues with childcare are raising their heads. I think it is about time I accepted this is always going to be the thing I find most difficult to deal with.

Such a lovely day today.

There are some events I have organised at work coming up at the end of the week, I am confident that it is going to go well and I have been on the steroids for a week so my health should stand the test. I may be leading some quite big classes for the first time too.

Time to ask for that pay rise!!!

Good luck with the pay rise Rebecca, (lol) you certainly appear to put alot of effort into your job, lets hope you get where you want to be with it very soon. As long as you enjoy it though that is the main thing.

I have been to the dentist this afternoon for some root treatment on one tooth. It took half an hour. Was really brave, just hope it doesn't hurt too much when the numbness wears off. Have already popped some pain killers as the dentist said it would be uncomfortable for a couple of days.

Good luck Rebecca. Stand firm and explain to them why you deserve it. I know childcare can be hard, my Mum is a teacher and so I used to have to stay with a friend until she could come and pick me up. It was a lot easier when we went to high school and were allowed our own keys.

Hope you're not in too much discomfort Jill.
I spent this morning in a yet another hospital appointment, which I'm sure will be fruitless again!! Not much news really here, keeping my head down and trying to get things sorted.

Good luck with the pay rise Rebecca. I worked part time to avoid the child care problems. I did not get the half terms off so that was tricky. It got easier once my daughters were in secondary school.

I hope that your tooth is not too painful Jill. I don't remember being in pain after my root canal filling.

I have finished decorating :D I am now resting and watching lots of tennis.

PA had her wisdom removed last Friday. All went well. Sadly she can't eat properly as she can't open her mouth very much because they have sewn her gum to her cheek! She has also been unable to go to work or do anything useful this week. The anaesthetic has made her tired and dizzy :(

Big Hugs to PA, Copper, that doesn't sound very nice. Fortunately my tooth isn't hurting much at all, although my gum is looking rather manky. I'll give my mouth a good swill with salt water to help heal it.

I really need to get motivated to do something, i've quite got into this chilling lark, still haven't finished decorating the front room and the poufee is still in pieces and needs recovering. I know I used to do too much but most of the time I can't be bothered other than the normal cooking, washing, ironing etc. (and working full time)I haven't done any craft stuff for a long time either.

rebecca c
26-06-2008, 07:37 PM
Jill cooking cleaning washing ironing and working full time sounds like enough to me. But you have failed to mention all the care you put into your extended family on the list too!!! I am glad your tooth is comfortable.

Copper send my best wishes to PA I hope she is soon better.

The events today went well. Except my face swelled up last night along with attendent poorliness, so I had to deliver my first whole class teaching with a red swollen face. Its amazing how the kids dont use it to take the mickey I guess that is partly because they have respect for me which is a really good start. Anyway it was not perfect but it went well.

I have had a few staff moaning and letting me know their criticisms which I have managed to take with equanimity up til yesterday afternoon when I said some mild things I regret. Today I kept my temper but I am feeling slightly angry that they should choose to moan at a person who is paid considerably less and has considerably less status within the organisation than they do. I guess the trouble is I have management training and they dont so they do not always consider how they should behave to people who are not paid to take the responsibility.

Anyway I am incredibly proud of myself for all I have acheived and it is definitely a boost to my confidence and I am nearly up to speed on getting my skills base back up to where it was when I left work. Still a little way to go though.

jill
27-06-2008, 06:24 PM
Well done Rebecca for everything you have achieved, sorry to hear your face swelled up. Thanks for reminding me that I do alot, I did actually get the poufee material out after I wrote my note last night and progressed a bit with it.

I work with some people who are rather negative but we have to try and keep ourselves above the comments. It is easy to get dragged down by them but as long as we can remind ourselves that it is not good then we can come out of it. I too have had some management training which I think made it difficult when I was in a management position because some of the others had no or very little training and didn't know how to behave. Thing is because I was very sensitive I resigned as I couldn't take the rubbish. I know I made the right decision for me at the time and am stronger for it now. You keep at it girl.

Yesterday went well too. I am so proud of myself. Got a nice thank you from the head (as my husband said I would rather have had a training place than a bunch of flowers - but heh they'll have a job refusing me next year)

My first teaching went brilliantly - leading them in a role play for 8 sessions on the trot. There were kids in the room who can have real behavioural problems and they were really good, I felt able to adjust the way I spoke to different children depending on the backgound behind there problem behaviour. The staff in my department were overwhelmingly supportive and went out their way to make it possible for me. WOW.

Social services grrrrrr. My mother is still waiting for a shower to be fitted. Social serices have agreed to pay for it. A man came round and measured up in April. Three weeks ago I phoned and the same man told me it would be another three weeks. He said it was marked on his paperwork as urgent. Huh.

We only started asking last October!

I have enjoyed some really good tennis today. I have had a good day today which is nice after the events of other days in the week. All but one of the fish died in the pond. I had to empty the pond, clean it and then fill it again. The electric shredder died when I went to use it. The Dyson cleaner died after I had used it upstairs. It refused point blank to work downstairs. I now have to get used to a new Dyson.

Things always seem to die en mass, I think it's just a way to annoy people.

Things certainly seem to be going well for you at the moment Rebecca. If you are able to proove yourself this year then you hopefully will get that training place afterall. Fingers crossed.

Oh Dear Copper, bit of a bad week for you. Yes why is it when 1 thing goes wrong it leads to another. At least 3 things should be the end of it.

Why is it you can never get trades people to do jobs? The builder/architect who cancelled twice but said would be back in touch after a show they were doing hasn't bothered. Not that we would have given them the job anyway. Why can't people just be honest. If they didn't want the job why not say so rather than messing people about. Bit like social services, and the home my nana is in, they call them selves carers. Enough said.

I've managed to get quite a bit of sewing done this weekend on the pouffee i'm re-covering. I'm pleased with how its going. Just all the ends to sew in now, attach some braid and some press studs so I can fasten the cushion to the base. I had gone to the shop with the intention of buying some zips to fasten the two pieces together but realised that it wouldn't work well. I asked the girl for some advice. I wouldn't like to say she was thick or stupid but why employ people who haven't got a clue on what products they sell.

Have a good week everyone.

Wow what an epic Wimbledon final. I didn't get dinner until 10pm :lol2:
I have no excuses now so I will have to get back to the chores. I don't think that I will be gardening this week somehow. What has happened to our summer?

I am still trying to make my mind up about buying more fish for my pond. The newt is happy in the pond as I sa it yesterday. I have not seen the one fish that did survive but then it is small and black.

Spoke to the sussex wildlife trust recently and they say if you want a wildlife pond dont put fish in it as they eat all the spawn, baby frogs and newts etc etc not to mention each other!!!

This is why I am still thinking about it. I used to see a lot of frogs when we first made the pond. I have seen the odd one this year but numbers have dropped due to red leg disease (a virus I think).

I have seen the odd damsel fly this year.

Maybe I will leave the pond as it is for a year or two and see what happens.

Sorry I've not been in touch for a while, I unfortunately got myself admitted into hospital for 5 days, and was only released last night. I'm still pretty unwell, but doing better than I was. They're not even sure what caused the illness!!

I saw some of the Wimbledon final, but my concentration was zero so couldn't follow it, managed to cope with the F1 just about.

Hope all are well.

Copper - she told us about that disease but I havent held the details in my head, it seems to be a major problem.

Claire - I am upset to hear you have been unwell and I am glad you have been well enough to come home. I hope they do find out what caused the illness.

My friends daughter has CFS and she gets very fatigued and can not concentrate on much - she used to be a keen reader of things like Anne Franks diary but now can only cope with childrens picture books in small doses. I find it hard to deal with her illness as I am very close to her but her Mum is being amazing and she helps me to understand by telling me all the information the doctors have given her, it is very likely she will get better.

I am not too bad have had some symptom rise and I think this was from taking a half dose of the calcium supplement so need to sort this out its a real dilema as to what to do. My sister has a more concentrated suppliment which has no dairy so I need to get this and give it a try. Get my symptoms down first though

Oh Claire I am sorry to hear that you have been ill. A stay in hospital can't have been much fun. Don't over do things the minute you feel better.

Rebecca, I hope that you get things under control soon.

We are trying to choose a new carpet for our lounge/diner. We have taken the easy option and are having three firms round to show us samples and quote us for the job. We have seen one firm so far and I am already weary :)

Next week our plumber is coming to fit the new tap in the kitchen, if he remembers! He said he never forgets a job so that explains why I had to phone him and ask if he was coming. We discussed this job when he ran out of time after tiling the kitchen about 5 or 6 weeks ago.

Thanks guys. Am rather dosed up on painkillers so mostly sleeping at the moment.

Rebecca, if I can be of any use let me know, as the illness they think I have (not the one that put me in hospital) is similar in some ways to CFS, so I know a lot of people with it. It's not an easy illness to live with, but if she's young, rests and listens to her body she should do well. It's not easy to see people suffer I know.
It's important that she isn't pushed to do too much too soon, but at the same time she can't be afraid of trying little things sometimes otherwise it can cause more complications.

They think my recent visit to hospital despite presenting as gastroenteritis was in fact a kidney infection.

Sorry to hear you have been in hospital Claire, take care and get plenty of rest to help you recover.

Things are pretty wet up hear at the moment. The chicken doesn't think much to the rain. It started sheltering under a bush tonight, by the time I had fetched my camera it had moved to hide under my car. Poor thing.

Afraid i had to get one of my positive thinking books out tonight. A couple of incidences at work have got to me in the last two days so I need to keep myself strong to rise above it.

Had some upsetting news last week a friend who has been a support whilst my mum has had her treatment for cancer phoned to say that her mum has just been diagnosed with cancer but it is terminal and she has been told she only has 2 - 3 months. She is currently in hospital with pneumonia. I couldn't believe it, all the time my mum has been having treatment and her mum had it aswell but didn't know.

rebecca c
10-07-2008, 09:19 PM
Jill that is very upsetting news.

Dont let the people at work get to you. When I went to the healer (it didnt work) but she told me something which is really hippy but I find it really helps me as I tend to take on board and carry other people's emotions. She said I cant stop from dealing with other peoples emotions becuase it is in my nature but I can consider them and decide what they are and then send them back out into the atmosphere where (good or bad) they perform a useful function in energising the world.

I am a bit embarrassed to admit I find it helpful as it is dead kooky but different things work for different people.

On the same level you may find visualisation or relaxation tapes helpful, these once really helped a friend of mine.

Clare - I am glad you have some idea what was wrong. Your advice on CFS is helpful and it is pretty much the approach her Mum is taking, I follow her lead and find it useful to practice not pushing her and letting her determine the pace of her life as I tend to push my kids and myself when we are ill as this was how I was raised.

Havent solved the calcium problem as my sisters tablets have aspartame and I have never tried it but have serious concerns about it (try to make sure the boys dont consume it) and would expect to have reactions to the methanol it contains. (Both methane and alcohol make me ill)

Well it has been quiet here lately. I had a stressful time last week. The plumber failed to turn up twice to fit a new kitchen tap. We found a different plumber and he fitted the tap this morning.

Last week we had our eyes tested and both of us need new glasses. I have to get prescription sunglasses as I wear varifocals. That has set me back £430

We have found a nice carpet firm who are going to fit a new lounge/dining room carpet in a couple of weeks time. They move the furniture which is excellent. We just have to move the precious and small things.

The sun is shining and there is no gale force wind. I think I will go and clean the patio table and chairs.

TLC and plenty of rest is definetly what you need Clare, lets hope you are feeling better soon.

I am trying not to spend as much time on the internet as I don't get other things done. I've managed to write a letter to a long term pen pal and am still in the process of getting my poufee finished - 4 more press studs to sew on and it will be finished.

Just had to share the news that my boss is being moved side ways. Her replacement will be totally new to the department so fingers crossed we won't have to put up with some of the grief that we have had to do over the past 2 - 3 years. I'm just going to keep my head down and hope that "things can only get better" or as some people say, and the words to another song "better the devil you know" Time will tell.

Feeling very worthy as I have cleaned all the upstairs bedrooms to within an inch of their lives with hoover and steam cleaner this week. I am trying to get ready for our house swap with a French family. So now only the rest of the house to go.

It is a good thing I am on the steroids this week or I couldn't of done it all and looked after boys and all the other chores I have managed as well, shopping, laundry, walking dog, taking boys out etc etc.

hi all, so stressed, baby has been on neocate for 5 days now and it seems like his allergy symptoms might be reappearing!!! we have been through 6 different milks already! arrgghhh!!!

Copper
02-08-2008, 10:55 AM
Oh no. Neocate has been "designed" for allergic babies. There should be nothing in that milk to produce any reaction.

I found this on a website:-

Neocate is described on the label as:

Hypoallergenic: the Neocate formula is much less likely to cause allergic reactions than other infant formulas.
Elemental: the ingredients in Neocate are broken down to their simplest and purest form so they are easier for the body to process and digest.
Containing Free Amino Acids: Amino Acids are the building blocks for all protein. Free Amino Acids are “man made” and do not come from animal or soy protein. Therefore, Neocate is much less likely to cause an allergic reaction.

Your baby is different. I see that the label says "less likely to cause an allergic reaction"

I hope that somebody can get this sorted out soon. It sounds like you need to see a specialist. Let us know how you get on.

Nice to have you back Claire, hope you got plenty of TLC, not good that you are still not well though. Lets hope you start to pick up a little soon.

We have been having lots of rain, but I did manage to spend most of yesterday (sunday) in the garden. I kept boiling kettles full of water to pour on all of the dandilions that are covering the drive. I find it better than weed killer and a lot cheaper. One day we will have a lovely drive - but that will be a while away yet.

We have finally found an architect to do the plans for our house renovation, he made a good suggestion for a different location for the ensuite which will make the room which I want to use as my craft room so much bigger.

rebecca c
04-08-2008, 09:03 PM
It must be stressful worrying about the neocate causing reactions, seems like it is at least likely to be causing the least reactions out of all the milks available. It is probably worth trying to give it a bit of time to settle in, I hope you get some help and support from the doctors.

Now I am jealous - a craft room how lovely.

Claire that hair do sounds great, I hope you start to feel better soon.

We are having a new carpet in the lounge/diner on Friday. We have chosen a company that moves furniture. We will still be busy tomorrow moving what we can. I keep telling myself that it will be lovely when it has been done.

We had rain predicted for today which is why the sun is shining! It is very humid which is ok if you don't have to do anything. We have battled our way round Tesco this morning. I am going to give the garden a quick tidy.

Hope you have a lovely holiday Rebecca and it is dry where you are going.

Blocked sinuses are not good Claire, hope your head doesn't hurt too much. I had it once and it hurt everytime I put my head forward.

Do you think autumn is on its way? It certainly seems like it, i've had to dig a jumper and socks out this afternoon. We have had so much rain in the past couple of days, some houses in our village have been flooded and the drains have only just been upgraded to cope with such a thing. We are lucky as our house is raised up a bit but 3 fire engines were out down our street on Thursday night pumping peoples homes out. Not good. I was rather concerned about the chicken that visits us as one of the homes that was flooded is where it spends the night but the next morning it was back in our garden, it hates the rain so I imagine it is not very happy at the moment.

Decided to have a sort out of my clothes today, i've got a big pile of stuff to get rid of that i will never wear again. Chilled in front of the telly this afternoon watching some of the olympics and flicking through housey magazines.

Things are pretty quiet here, can't get these reactions under control though, which is making for some fun times. Slowly catching up on other things, and starting to get prepared for my MSc, which is also slightly terrifying.

Been watching far too much of the olympics and doing a bit of shouting at the TV when the rowing is on- frustration at my own problems, not at them as such.

Bex don't be fobbed off with IBS, that is what I was told I had and I just "had to live with it". After 15 years which virtually wrecked my life confidence wise I finally found it was lactose intolerance, and my life has improved so much since then. Stick to your guns and get it sorted whilst ajay is young. Good Luck.

I have been watching quite abit of the olympics, good job I have to go to work or else I imagine I would be spending all day in front of the telly.

I'm in the process of stripping the wall paper off our hall way. Needs quite abit of preping then I'll just give it a coat of paint. I was sat on the floor scraping the paper off with the front door open tonight and the chicken came and stood on the door step to have a look what I was doing. It is a good job that you got a letter otherwise you would be in the dark. Grrrr

Ajay must have a problem with dairy so this means that he is lactose intolerant, intolerant to the milk protein or both! I guess that this is not very helpful but the answer is to keep him dairy free.

It is good to hear that he is happy now. He must have been feeling quite poorly and miserable before you got this sorted out. Long may it last.

Glad that you got some more information, it's so frustrating when they don't tell you the full details of things- I have to call into my GPs every time I see a specialist to make sure that they told me the same thing they actually wrote!!

I hope they get it all finalised soon and he can be a happy dairy free baby:) and you can have one less thing to worry about.

I've been busy watching the olympics (still!!) and generally just trying to sort things out, and keep things under control. Still trying to fight with the damp in the flat- the dehumidifier is on 24/7!!

Copper
17-08-2008, 07:56 PM
Claire if your flat is so damp does it have mould? If it has maybe it is the mould spores that are making you ill.

I have never watched so much rowing! I enjoyed the tennis today. I even watched cycling and found that quite interesting.

cnc
17-08-2008, 08:11 PM
That's why I'm trying to dry out the flat:) It was empty for a while before I got into it, so it is taking a long time to sort out. The strange thing is though, that despite it being drier in here, I'm actually having more reactions. I know that mould spores are a trigger of mine, but there's obviously something else going on.

I really enjoyed watching the cycling as well. Didn't watch the tennis, was mostly watching the rowing and cycling.

Good news about Ajay.

We had a lovely holiday, my tummy was better than it has ever been on holiday. Only one stupid waitress (butter on veg!!!). My chest has been grotty all summer and something has set it off again either a virus or fumes from a wheelie bin fire outside our house last week. But I managed a long walk today and feel better for the fresh air, I bought some walking sticks on holiday which really help me walk more freely. I managed an alpine hike on holiday too. The boys have been so so lovely, fun, good company and well behaved. My youngest has got worse again since returning to school.

I have to do general work again at school as it is the beginning of the year. Trying to stay cool about it, as my chest was bad I was just glad to get through the first few days succesfully. I have been starting to sort out my teacher training applications for next year.

Why do places have to put butter on veg? I was at a wedding on saturday and all the vegetables were smothered in it. It was a good job I had taken a lactase tablet with me. Thing is i had already informed them I was lactose intolerant as I had to have strawberries as a desert instead of cheescake or the chocolate option. and they brought a jug of lactose free milk for me to have with my coffee at the end so why the butter?

Good luck with the course Claire. How long does it last for?

We will be back at the hospital in November for the results.
