My neighbour has just collected her quite poorly 5 year old from school after eating a trufree custard cream biscuit with her lunch.
After having bought them for her dairy free daughter for 5 years, they have changed their recipe. There is very little warning on the packet apart from 'improved recipe'. When my neighbour phoned the manufacturer to complain they said 'we are going to put a warning on the packets now as we've had a few complaints.
These biscuits now contain milk in the cream.
It may be worth checking their other biscuits too.
I was just sent this from Trufree:
Custard Creams – NOW CONTAIN MILK
We have received some phone calls from concerned customers about our Custard Creams which we have recently changed to a new recipe that contains milk. The pack states in the allergen box that the Custard Creams contain milk, however, as an extra precaution following feedback from our customers we have decided to add a “now contains milk” sticker to packs to warn customers.
The decision to change the recipe of the Custard Creams was taken after research found that the new recipe was preferred by customers.
Trufree would like to apologise to any customers who have been affected by this change in the recipe. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our Careline on 07041 544044.I hope your friends daughter isn't too poorly.

This reminds us to check things on a regular basis. I am always wary of anything that says, improved, new recipe etc.
I can only assume that the customers who like the new improved custard cream biscuits are not people with dairy problems. I guess that we are not important enough for these firms.
This reminds me that I never wrote to Smash when they changed to an "Improved Recipe". Like these biscuits they started adding milk - this is not good.

What made things worse is that when my neighbour went to collect her daughter the school secreatry had lost her Epipen and Piriton!!!!!!
That's one more nice thing we can't have. The little girl is also allergic to egg which makes it harder.
I've found Sainsburys fruit digestives to be dairy free.

I've just checked the bourbons I bought yesterday and the packaging has changed! They nolonger say "Wheat free, gluten free, egg free & milk free", now they just say "Wheat free, gluten free". I've looked at the ingredients and can't see any difference, but why change the packaging?
Merrick will be devastated if he can't have his bourbons!

How confusing. Perhaps you could email and ask them why they have changed the packaging for the bourbons.
I am going off Trufree!

Complain Penny! Perhaps then they may realise how important it is to some people.

I have just telephoned Trufree. The no. is 01925 865100.
They have confirmed that Bourbon biscuits are currently dairy free, but the intention is to start adding milk to all of their biscuits in the future.:(
They took my name address and telephone number and have logged my complaint. Perhaps if we all complain, they may realise how many customers they will lose by adding milk.

Have you tried Against the Grain biscuits? They are far nicer than the Trufree ones which are full of hydrogenated fat anyway.
Penny

I haven't seen these ones. Where do you get them from?
Penny

Do Against the Grain do Bourbons or Custard Creams? I do hope so...

Glutafin do wheat and dairy free bourbons and custard creams. I have found an online supplier or they can be ordered from the pharmacist.

I had a letter from Allergy UK a couple of days ago re the Trufree biscuits. Their bourbons will start to contain milk soon. They put in a paragraph saying that they specialise in 'wheat free and gluten free' foods and milk has been added to improve the flavour of custard creams and bourbon creams. Huh!!!:(
Boycott Trufree I say!!
Bought my neighbour a packet of dairy free chocolate buttons I found in Waitrose to cheer her up. I had some too, of course!

For those who are just avoiding dairy, Asda own brand bourbons are dairy free. Unfortunately I have not found any dairy free custard creams other than trufree available in the shops.
However, for those avoiding both dairy and wheat, glutafin make both bourbons and custard creams which are suitable. Taste tasted them today and they met with Merrick's approval! My pharmacist has agreed to supply these for £2 per box providing we order regularly and in bulk. I am spliting my order with another family who have 2 eosinophilic children. We did find them online but for £2.65 per box.
I spoke to Trufree on the phone and they were not particularly interested in dairy free stating that they are a wheat and gluten free company. I agree with Linny - boycott "Trufree".

Yes, I agree with a boycott of Truefree.
I don't think i've ever bought any trufree stuff, so won't bother, if I come across any.

That is so annoying. It's all very well them being committed to wheat & gluten free, but just that isn't enough! What about those of us who can't eat wheat/gluten or dairy?
Mind you, these days I buy Tescos biscuits anyway. I just hope they don't go the same way.

I've just been eating Mrs Crimbles peanut cookies which are really yummy. They are dairy and wheat free and I found them in the free from section in sainsburies. I think there are other types too.
They do say on the bottom that they are made in a factory which handles lactose and milk protein I don't know if that would cause problems for people.
Here is their website: http://www.mrscrimbles.com/

This is ridiculous! Being allergic to milk just isn't trendy anymore. Everywhere you go the dairy free selections seem to be shrinking. Hmm, if only us people with real allergies could shake them off as fast as those who only had them as fads did. It just shows that companies only care about what sells well in the current market. Down with Trufree! Down with Trufree!

Hi everyone, not been around for a while....sorry!! I got notification of this from Allergy UK a while ago....it's quite disappointing as Zac really likes the Bourbons.
I've had an email from Trufree this morning about this, with a link to a questionaire about any other allergies:
Firstly we would like to sincerely apologise to any of our customers who were affected by the change in our Custard Cream recipe which now contains milk. We realised that the packaging was not clear enough to inform you of the change so we recalled the product from the supermarkets.
The Custard Creams now have a red sticker on the seal to show that they contain milk. If you have any concerns about this matter, click here to email us (http://v2.i2i.uk.com/app/visitor/url.asp?url=18532&tid=1398137)or please call our Careline on 07041 544044.
Bourbon Biscuits
We are also in the process of changing our Bourbon biscuits to a milk containing recipe which will hit the supermarkets within the next couple of weeks. These biscuits will be clearly labelled with a red sticker which highlights that the recipe now contains milk.
Your opinion matters
In response to the concerns of our customers we would like to find out a little more about the other allergies you have. We do take customer feedback seriously, so if you could take a moment of your time to complete a questionnaire we would appreciate it. As an incentive to complete the questionnaire, we are giving away 15 hampers packed with delicious wheat and gluten free goodies to customers which we will draw at random. Click here (http://v2.i2i.uk.com/app/visitor/url.asp?url=18540&tid=1398137)to complete the questionnaire.
I have completed the questionnaire and hopefully they's get lots back confirming that lotsof us have a problem with more than wheat.

Hi Lou
I too have completed the questionnaire and forwarded it to a wheat and dairy free friend. Lets hope they get lots of replies!
Hi
Havent been on here for ages and just saw this so I called trufree and registered my complaint as well.
Jeez like its not hard enough and they do that? After eights did the same a few years ago but changed it back after complaints.
Fingers crossed.

For those who are just avoiding dairy, Asda own brand bourbons are dairy free..
Are you sure about that? i looked at them the other day and noticed it labels all the ingredients in the biscuit, but for cream it just says "chocolate cream filling" and no ingredients about what is in there.
Also with a lot of Asda own brand products they can contain dairy but it won't be listed in the allergy advice.
The worst for this are the bakery products, as i asked once about dairy free products they do, and the woman in charge handed showed me the recipe books they use to make their products (it was half ten at night so it probably passed some time for her), the pies especially were bad because they only label gluten and wheat in the allergy advice, but some (plum, rhubarb, summer fruits, and blackcurrant) all contain dairy in the recipe, but Apple and Winter Fruits didn't.
So be careful with Asda own brand products and wherever possible ask to check the ingredients lists/recipe books at the bakery or customer service to check for dairy.
Also for anyone living in Lincolnshire like me, our regional Crisp brand "Pipers Crisps" have now started using milk in their salt and vinegar flavour, i will be making a full forum post about this

Penny's post was in 2008 and things have got worse for us in the cake and biscuit department. Bah!
I am on a free from lost of things and minimum sugar diet at the moment, see post York Test. I am not going down the biscuit aisle at the moment but the last time I checked Fox's Party Rings, Tesco Bourbons and Tesco digestives were ok for us. Custard Creams contain dairy no matter who makes them, sigh.

Really annoys me, what have they got to gain by this? A lot of coeloacs have a problems with dairy too so more fool them. I have become a big fan of the against the grain biscuits, wouldn't go back!!!

ooh i do like party rings :D, might have to invest in some.
I've never heard of the "Against the grain" company, do they do a lot of free from foods?
You know one thing i really miss... Pizza, how come nobody makes a dairy free cheese and garlic pizza?
While in America i once found this dairy free cheese that tasted just like normal cheddar, but sadly it's all gone now and they won't ship beyond the US and Canada, i guess postage would be high if they did for a refrigerated container. Also annoyingly i can't remember the name either. But if a company here bought some distribution rights to it we could use it to make our own dairy free cheese pizza... damnit now i want pizza

Hello - I have emailed TRUFREE and received an instant reply:
"Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your email,
I can confirm that the information stating that Tru Free will be adding milk to their milk free biscuits is incorrect.
We currently don’t have any plans to change any of the Tru Free recipes."
Thought I would share this information with you all.

Yes that might be true now but that was not the case in 2008 when the original post here was made. Tru Free added milk to their biscuits in 2008.
I have checked the Tru Free site and looked at the ingredients for all the 6 biscuits they make. One, yes one is dairy free and those are the digestives which frankly you can buy cheaper by buying supermarket own brand. Do check the labels though.

In Tesco a couple of weeks ago I found some jammy dodgers in the free from aisle. They are free from wheat/gluten and dairy. They are really really nice. Pity I can't eat them for at least 3 months now that I am on my experimental diet. I think I spotted the same biscuits in Asda today.
I miss biscuits :(

Cool, i'll check those out next time i'm in Asda.
I miss just being able to snack on anything whenever i'm peckish, instead of having to have the same old thing over and over again because of lack of variety

I have checked the Asda site and they do have these lovely biscuits. They are "Prewetts Jammy wheels" They are in a box which has the word new on it. They cost £1-52. They contain soya flour for those that need to know.
