What kind of chocolates are dairy-free? Dark chocolate, etc?
There are several makes of dairy free chocolate about, most of which are dark, most of the milk varieties don't taste quite like proper milk chocolate does. Here are a few ideas, sure others will add some more.
Green & Blacks - Dark Chocolate with - Ginger - Cherry - Mint -Maya Gold.
Tesco Finest - Dark Chocolate with nibbed Orange and Spices
Thorntons Dark Chocolate with Ginger
Organica - Dark Chocoate with Raisins, Cinnamon & Nutmeg
Whizzers Chocolate Beans and Eggs
Elizabeth Shaws Liquer Chocolates
Booja Booja Truffles - various varieties available
Plamil -
Chocolate Buttons that you can get in some Tesco
Bournville is not dairy free and i don't think After Eights are anymore either, not sure about Frys Chocolate Cream. I used to buy some Raspberry Bars I think made by Jamesons which I used to get in Morrisons.
Hope this helps, don't worry you can still have a chocolate fix if you can't have dairy. Remember to read the labels though just to make sure, as lots of dark chocolate does contain milk.

Most of the supermarket cheaper versions of After Dinner mints are ok. You should check the label for hidden dairy. Those made abroad tend to contain butter oil.

Mhm, thanks for the list.
I know that Junior Mints are dairy free, and judging from the list nearly all dark chocolates are dairy-free?

It is probably fair to say that most dark chocolate is dairy free but do read the labels as some include butter oil.
Some of these dark chocolates are far too bitter for me.

Sorry was so excited by suscess of easter eggs that posted that one in the wrong place!!! eggs were made from swiss orgainica chocolate (made with rice milk)which is a non milk milk variety of chocolate a bit like galaxey in taste that you can buy from waitrose or online from either Dietary needs direct or Goodness direct they also do a white chocolate variety thats also dairy free but havent tried that yet. my son loves this chocolate and wont touch the dark stuff anymore so watch out! works well on its own melted into appropriate molds as icing on cake or even in the chocolate fountain have tried it all. cost is about £1.89 for large bar so not too bad price wise hope that helps xx

Just to be warned. Green and Blacks now contains whole milk powder. None of their bars are dairy free any more! Am gutted that they have taken one more thing away!
Have always had fry's cream since I was a child (used to be a lovely 5 flavoured one!!) and they have always maintained it dairyfree!

I was thinking about Green and Blacks when the latest possible take over happens to Cadburys. I think that this will be bad news for us.
The G & B site still has the warning from 2008 which states that there may be cross contamination as other products containing milk are produced on the same line. In other words if the label on the chocolate bar states "contains dairy" then it contains dairy, if it states "may contain dairy" then it might have traces of dairy for the reason I gave above. I have not checked the labels lately as I have been eating my Hotel Chocolat chocolate mountain :-)
I ate some Frys cream bar the other day and it was very nice. I can only eat half a bar a day as it contains soya. I don't like to push my luck.

I have just been to the health food shop in Broadstone, Poole. I checked all of the labels on the Green and Blacks Chocolates and every single one contains powdered milk.
Why have they not changed the information on their site? I feel an email coming on.

I read the site more carefully. They state that they have put skimmed milk in the actual ingredients because of the possibility of cross contamination. It is made on the same line as the mik=lk chocolate and that the recipe has not changed at all. They have not actually put any in it.
They state the reason is because of money and the cost of keeping it seperate.
Another very nice chocolate is the dairy free one, not sure if it contains soya though. It's in a black shiny packet with coloured circles around the allergy bit. It's usually in the free from section.
It must be really difficult not to have soya, it's the only thing that keeps me sane with it all. I even go to shakeaways as I can have hot chocolate or a milkshake with fry's cream! Though my favourite is the palma violets one!
Take care

The soya intolerance is a real pain at times. I developed this intolerance once I had to go dairy free. I was careful to keep my soya intake at a low level in order to avoid becoming intolerant to soya
I eat things which contain soya lecithin, usually chocolate. If I eat too much chocolate I feel ill. I did experiment with weighing my chocolate and could eat 40g of some Hotel Chocolat chocolate I was eating at the time, without feeling ill.
I still think that Green and Blacks labels are not helpful.
My fav chocolate of late is Asda Extra Special Organic Dark Chocolate with Orange Inclusions. (bit of a monuthful, eh!) No dairy in the ingredients (just says suitable for vegetarians tho. I don't know why). Reeeeally nice tho. Bit like Maya Gold.

I recently tried one of Plamils' mini bars - organic orange chocolate with cranberries, it was really yummy and they now use sunflower lecithin instead of soya lecithin.
Mmmmm. Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for that one :)

I have not liked the Plamil chocolate in the past but even I will try this one out.
No soya is a bonus for me.

I've not tried their other chocolates but there are two other flavours in this luxury mini bar range, I've only seen them in the wholefood shops here and vegan fairs when Plamil have had a stall. Here is a link to their page:
