I have just been away for a couple of days in Nottingham and I am afraid that both evening meals were delayed because of my need for dairy free. The first was at the Village Hotel in Nottingham, on the first night I ordered a pasta dish, as did both my sisters, theirs were brought to the table first covered with parmesan cheese. I commented that I hoped that mine didn't come with any, the waiter heard as he said he would check. I must have been at least another 5 minutes before my dish was brought out, obvisously they had put parmesan cheese on it and had had to dish me another one up. Why? it wasn't stated on the dish and as it is quite an acquired taste I could imagine that several people are not happy to have it dumped on it without being asked first. Excellent hotel otherwise though, loads for breakfast and excellent facilities.

The next night my sister decided we would eat at Pizza Express after our day shopping, wasn't that keen but I was ready for something to eat and I had my lactase tablets with me. I ordered the basic Margarita pizza, with mushrooms, ham and spicy beef. I clearly stated I couldn't have cheese and this was written down by the waitress. Guess what, pizza came covered in cheese. Apologies all round, a fresh one was then made, without cheese, with more apologies. I then had to pick all the green peppers off it which I hadn't asked for, and which I don't like. It had also been covered in black pepper before being brought to the table and the pepper mill was also brought to the table. The pizza was rather tasty, but why put things on when they haven't been asked for? (and it wasn't that express either)

Both my children and I went to visit my sister in Nottingham over the Easter Holidays for a few days. We went to Alley cafe for lunch on one of the days. Its in the city centre which was very convenient. We had ciabatta pizzas with dairy free cheese and chose from toppings which included sundried tomato, mushrooms as well as meat free bacon, ham and salami. My son also had a dairy free chocolate milkshake made with sweedish glace and soya milk - I had a sip and it was very tasty. All the desserts were dairy free, we shared a banoffee cheesecake and mango raspberry cake which came with vanilla sweedish glace. Although the staff were rushed off their feet they were very friendly and helpfull. Overall, a very good experience with tasty food and good value for money, I would definitely go again. http://www.alleycafe.co.uk/
