Hello All

After 9 months of being on infant gaviscon (in every single feed) because doctors thought my daughter had reflux they have now come to the conclusion that she is lactose and soya inolerant. This has taken the last 7 and a half hard weeks of diarrhea and sickness to finally conclude. My daughter is now on a milk formula called neoctine? and is on a dairy free diet.
However I was sent away with little or no information at all and was told she would see a paediatrician in a few weeks.
She has been fine on the milk however is still at the moment off her solids and may only eat fruit and a few rusks each day!!

I need some help please as to what I might do to help her eat foods again without being frightened of it hurting her tummy, and some suggestions as to what my daughter is now allowed to eat.

Thankyou.

Hmm it is a long time since I had a baby to feed.

You must check everything you give her. Read the ingredients carefully for any sign of milk or added lactose and soya.

This page on this site gives alternative names for milk.

It would probably be best to print this out as you can then take it when you shop.

You can try feeding her what you would normally give a 10 month old but exclude anything with dairy, lactose and soya. So you could make custard or rice etc using her special milk.

With her intolerances you may have to do a lot of cooking from scratch. Soya is in so many things these days.

You really need an appointment with a dietician.

My youngest is 10 so it is quite a while for me to. They did have a broadly dairy free diet but they were not intolerant or allergic so I didnt have to be vigorous. I was careful because of my intolerence.

Both my boys were breastfed til 2 and 1 and a half. Neither of them showed any interest in solids until 8 months and were not eating much solids at 9 months. I remember pureeing lots of fruit and vegetables and mixing them with baby rice. I gave the youngest quite a lot of the organic baby jars so things like vegetables in tomatoe sauce. Then I would puree what we ate if I made something nice. In order for this to work you can cook and bake with pure sunflower spread, sunflower oil, rice milk (some are fortified with calcium.) Bare in mind some shop bought bread has milk powder in it. For hand held food they used to eat apple slices and bread/pitta bread/toast. Thats all I can remember for now. If you ask specific questions it may jog my memory.

You need to be aware that without dairy you need to take extra care over her calcium intake especially once you wean her off formula. Be sure to ask the paediatrician about this. Green leafy veg and brocolli are high in calcium as are dried figs and apricots and wholemeal bread has calcium in it.
