Keep in mind that I'm allergic to dairy...

I went out to dinner with my partner and his family and I ordered fish. We asked for it to be cooked in oil, not butter and it came with melted cheese on the top so we asked for it with no cheese.

My meal arrives and there is cheese on the top.. So my partner and I look at the waiter and I say, "I'm allergic to dairy, I can't eat this"

The waiter replies with "Oh ok, I'll take it into the kitchen and we can scrape the cheese off"

Now everyone at the table is staring at the waiter and I say "ah no... I'm allergic to dairy!"

For the second time the waiter says "We can just scrape it off in the kitchen"

Now everyone at the table has a look of "this guy is an idiot" on their face and my partner is spelling it out for the waiter that once dairy has touched my food I can't eat it!!!

My partner is a fine dining chef and so he is stunned that the waiter would even mention scraping off cheese to the customer. And he mentioned it TWICE. But he is even more stunned that the guy just doesn't get it...

Finally when my food arrived, my partner tasted my food first just to make sure it wasn't cooked in butter...

Eating out sucks! but to this day we still laugh about the waiter...

when i was at school this boy had a peanut allergy and if you had peanut butter you couldnt even sit next to him, yet a waiter in a restaurant wants to 'scrape the cheese off' your food? thats crazy...

I have been told to just pick the crutons out (have gluten allergy) and the best one has been when I was given a salad with cheese grated on it and a dressing with cream in it (although I have asked for it to be gluten and dairy free), the waiter said there is only a little of each on there, I explained what an allergy was and stated I had asked for neither and he said that they could do it again but i would have to pay for another one. Spoke to manager who at this point was very apologetic and said we could have the meals on the house but that was not the point and we just left!

It's very frustrating but you have to laugh in the end!;)

I had a similar experience last week. A friend was trying to book us a table for this Saturday and had to explain to the chef what dairy meant!!! I then spoke to him and told him that I could not have any dairy. He told me about his menu which included mashed potato. I asked him if he put butter in it and he said "only a little bit".

We are going somewhere else this Saturday. They can cater for various diets if warned.

I have booked to go to Wagamamma's tonight and when I phoned they said just turn up and they would cater for Dairy and Wheat free for most of the menu! there are some that do not need to be changed but will make anything you want! Wish they could all be like that! So frustrating! Hope you enjoy Saturday!

I enjoyed my meal out a few weeks ago.

I met my second cousin today and she told me that there is a place in Basingstoke who try hard to please even picky eaters. It is part of the Beefeater chain apparently.

I thought these things only happended to me. I was at TGIs a couple months ago, and we explained to the waitress that I had a dairy allergy, and she said totally understood. So when my burger came with a lovely layer of melted cheese on it, she apologised and took it away only to return with my plate 2 mins later. I said 'oh wow, that was quick!' To which her response was 'yea, we scraped off the cheese!'
I emphasised that I had a dairy allergy, and by this time, I was starving and cranky, so we just got up and left!
These things happen every so often, in the end, as someone previously said, you just have to laugh about it!

Obviously this is my brother-in-law's true vocation - stupid chef/waiter! He's house sitting for us while we go away for a few days and I sent him to the shops this morning to buy something for supper. He comes back with LASAGNE and when I said Stuart can't have this, he said "Oh we can just scrape off the sauce".
