*hands up* i am guilty of eating too much bread!! and with a lunch time sarnie comes the inevitable packet of crisps! and the ever trying-to-expand-but-astra-trying-hard-not-to-let-it waistline!

i usually have some sort of bread product in the morning too, in the form of crumpets, toast with either jam, marmalade or mushroom pate, muffins with baked beans or teacakes. I've tried and tried to have cereal as my first meal, but i just don't seem to be satisfied on it and end up with a snack (usually crisps although i do try to have some fruit) at about 11 am, with bread for breakfast i don't seem to have this 11 am dip in energy.

so, if i can't give up my beloved toast in the morning, i guess it had better be the lunchtime sarnie!! admittedly it is usually a pitta stuffed with hummus and salad.. but it's just not the same without a packet of crisps! As a vegetarian I used to try and have a jacket potato and salad (good girl!!), and sometimes a piece of quiche and salad, (usually with crisps) (anyone see a pattern emerging here? ;) )

time for something different methinks!! with summer coming up too, there will be plenty of salad stuff in the fridge, but what to put on a rice cake? I'd be more drawn to the salted ones i think, as my weakness is anything salty so anyone got any ideas? i'd like a change from hummus, as i love the stuff in pittas, so would save it for that, i'd also like a change from the lovely vessen mushroom pate that i live on for a few days when i've managed to get hold of it!

savoury ideas for lunch (not necessarily involving rice cakes.. and definately not involving crisps!!) please!!

Hi there Astra,

Have you thought about getting a microwave dish to make omelette, I really enjoy an omelette for lunch and you can mix and match the fillings. For example, vegatables, dairy free cheese etcetera.

You could also try a sweet potato instead of a normal potato and they are very tasty. I like them with cheese on or scoop the filling out the night before, mix it with some dairy free cheese and put the skin in the oven for approximately 10 minutes to cook. Add some garlic to the inside and when the skin is ready replace the filling. When you go into work just heat them up in the microwave.

You could also make a vegetable curry, or have beans on toast. I find this is sufficent to keep me from picking at other foods.

As for Rice cakes, dairy free soft cheese is nice on them or if you get the peppercorn ones, they are nice alone.

Good Luck.

Lan.

i would have taken you up on the omelette idea when i was a vegetarian Lan, however i no longer eat eggs as a vegan

mmm beans on toast, with a fried mushroom and brown sauce mmmm !! i usually have something like this as a late breakfast/brunch :)

I've never had a sweet potato. will have to get one when i am shopping next, to see what all the fuss is about! ;) i would imagine that they'd taste nice with the equivelent of philadelphia and throw on some chives.

ahhh all this talk of food and my mouth is watering! lol and i've just had a *huge* bowl of pasta in a spicy tomato sauce!

oohh not seen the peppercorn rice cakes, will definately have to have a hunt for them :)

my problem is that i am a housewife, so have access to the kitchen all day!! must resist must resist!!

to do list: MUST find some dairy free soft cheese!!! (and some cheezley before Lan shouts at me :notworthy: ) hehe

cool!! cheers Lan :)

and it's PAY DAY!!!! today (thank goodness.. hated the last 2 weeks - 2x5 week months have been sheer torture!) so lots and lots of fresh fruit, and lots of yummy vegan stuff!! falafel mmmm soy yogurts/ice cream

man do i sound deprived or what? lmao

unfortunately asda don't do (as far as i know) any vegan cheese of any kind, saying that, i went to a bigger tesco than normal and couldn't find any there either

gonna be raiding the rice cake section big time tho! lolz. better get a bigger tub of low fat hummus than normal then ;)

and i've put myself on low fat crisps!! negligible difference i know, but it all helps!!

i did a really long post to put in my diary yesterday, then my machine came up with loads of high risk warnings, managed to get an evil virus that was a sod to get rid of, and a worm at the same time!! i dunno..you wait for a bus...when i get five mins today i'll do another one :) at last!! somewhere to put all my nonsense ramblings!! (other than here ;) ) :woot:

Astra, know what you mean about the housewife thing, I used to spend all day eating just picking at biscuits and crisps. Now have to be dairy free as still feeding the baby so no more choc for me I now munch healthy food like dried fruit, fresh fruit, sun flower seeds, crisps with no salt ( salt n shake) and as a last resort drink water if I am hungry. I have porrige for breakfast and this tends to last till lunch, I agree with the bread thing I had toast this morning and was hungry by 10am cant understand why you just dont have rice ckes for breakfast lunch and dinner!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck with your cheese hunting Dont know how close you live to bristol but have you tried wild oats lower redland road Lisa

I agree with Irg that porridge is the way to go for breakfast. If you make it with water, and just put a little bit of soya milk on top to moisten it, it comes out much lower calorie than any of the other options (200 cal for 50g porridge). The jumbo oats make a lovely texture. I put fruit (raspberries at the moment, yum!) on top to try and get to my five portions a day.

On lunch, have you thought about scrambled tofu (nice with mushrooms though a bit grey, or lots of spring onions)? Or snacking on the smoked tofu that you can get in health food shops. Both of them are really filling and pretty good for you. I also really like chickpea curry, which you can either make (tin chickpeas, tin tomato, one red pepper, spices to taste, takes about 15 minutes) or buy in a tin at the health food shop.

My current favourite snack is cinnamon and raisen bagels with honey (I know honey's not vegan, but jam is also good), though that is more wheat.

And have you discovered the various 'rice' crisps? The Kallo salt and vinegar and the barbecue ones are non-dairy, and are sometimes findable in health food shops (Fresh and Wild at Old Street in London generally has them). They're more filling than normal crisps, but similar enough to quell the craving, I find.

From a fellow snacker,

Nic

I'm trying to avoid sandwiches for lunch as I'm worried about getting a wheat intollerance again as I tend to have toast for breakfast and some form of pasta for dinner most nights.

What I have taken to doing is making a big bowl of rice salad which will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days and just having a bowl of that for lunch each day. You can vary it by adding different things to it and I discovered that crumbled up Cheezely (or however you spell that dairy free mature cheese substitute) gives it a good flavour too. I'm not a great fan of veggies so tend to just put peas in but you could add pretty much anything! The only problem I can forsee with it is the mayo - can you get vegan mayo???

Yes, Plamil do one and I'm sure I've seen one in both Sainsburys and Tesco on the free from aisle.

Can anyone tell me where I can get the peppercorn rice cakes Lan mentioned in an earlier posting? They sound yummy! ;)

Thanks. :D

I had a quick Google and could not find any but spotted these from Goodness Direct - organic rice cakes with amaranth.

Hi Lyn

I normally get the peppercorn rice cakes from Tescos. They tend to be around the free from range. I also get them from my local Holland and Barrett.

Good luck.

Morrisons have the flavoured rice cakes on the crisps aisle and they also have some plain rice cakes on the savoury biscuit aisle.
