What in your opinion is the best dairy free milk substitute? I'm also trying to get my youngest to not have cows milk on his cereals as he seems to permanently have a blocked nose but he is 12 and very stubborn!

I have tried Ecomil Quinoa drink - ok on cereals but quite sweet
Rice dream - a bit watery and some of them aren't gluten free I think
Alpro - not bad but curdles in coffee

I'm coeliac too so I can't have Oatly :(

I used to like the chilled soya milk until I developed a soya intolerance. It did curdle in my coffee - yuk.

I now have Oatly milk.

I guess you just have to taste more until you find something you like. It could get expensive.

I use provomil rice milk in the purple box - the stuff in the green box is a bit weak but I can drink it by the glass and use it on my cerial too... I have black coffee so not sure if it works in hot drinks

I think I'll give that a try then, thanks Dianne.

I'm a rice dream lover ! Their website says it is gluten free but then it also says it isn't !

helen... ive just re read my post and it makes no sense what-so-ever. the stuff in the purple box is what i think is the nice stuff - the stuff in the green box is the weaker tasting one

phew.... that was difficult on the old brain box :headbang:

Yea I agree, provamel (purple box) is nicer than rice dream. Rice dream has barley in, so it has gluten in, unless you get the organic one i think. I prefer provamel in my porridge as its less watery.

I have found little difference in most of the soya milks - so I get the UHT store's own brand unsweetened one, as long as it has added Ca and vitamins. I used to drink Alpro but fail to see the point of paying 30p per litre more when I can't tell the difference... Having said that the new Tesco unsweetened UHT is almost always sold out when I get there. Sainsburys seem to have a better stock:demand ratio and I can usually get hold of some.

It took a while to get used the taste of soya milk and I switched from corn flakes to bran flakes as the bran taste covered the soya taste more. I tried Oatly for a while, but couldn't get used to its taste on my breakfast - if I wanted to eat porrage for breakfast, I would ;)

To be honest, it might be easier to stick to one type for while so your son can try get used to the taste (and then if he still doesn't like it, try something else). But if you keep swapping, then the single change from milk to dairy-free alternative become several changes and even more daunting.

I bought Fairtrade Rice milk from Tesco's (free from range).

Sweet but fine for kids on cereal. Not so good in cheese sauce (free from range) but was advised to add mustard to make cheesier.

Still not sure about taste thou, for sauce & not so nice for me to drink.

Trying to find something we can all drink & goes o.k in coffee & cooking

Lacto free nice & creamy in sauce & o.k to drink

I have tried rice milk but also fine it watery. I can no longer have oaterly or soya but find that the Kara coconut milk is lovely in my cerals (gluten free). My friends have had it in their tea and told me that they cannot taste the difference. And it is a good way of getting calciumas it is added.

when i first went dairy free i tried a few types and hated them, after thirty odd years of cows milk it was a hell of a change, then last year i tried tescos own brand sweetened soy milk (blue & white bottle) and it was lovely. ive used it in cooking and on cereals since. although having to much of it does give me an upset belly but i would have thought that its soy in general not that particular milk

I don't know anybody who has a gluten intolerance and has Oatly milk. My eldest daughter has a gluten intolerance and oats have started affecting her now :( She makes flapjacks but has to rotate them ie eat one a day for a couple of days then have a few days clear.

I have developed an intolerance to soya too. I have to be careful how much soya lecithin I have in a day. This is found in rather a lot of foods

I use KARA Dairy Free made from cocnut milk on my cerals and just cold. It does not taste of coconut except when it is drunk on its own slightly.

I have gluten intolerence, havent tried oatly, I managed oats for a while and then they started to make things worse, should of taken Copper's daughters example and rotated but I am such an all or nothing person.

Ah she didn't start rotating until the gluten in the oats affected her.

We discovered last year that she can tolerate bread made with spelt but she has to rotate it with her Orgran free from everything bread.

I'm finding it very confusing. So is there any milk substitute that does not have Gluten or soya in it ?

Apparently oats don't contain gluten but get contaminated in the mill etc. Oatly milk probably contains a small amount of gluten.

I am testing out a wheat/gluten free diet so Oatly milk is off my menu.

There are various makes of rice milk and some have added calcium. I have used rice milk for cooking and it is great. I don't like it in hot drinks though as my hot drink tasted like hot rice milk - yuk. I am now drinking weak black coffee and orange juice with added calcium

I have a severe lactose allergy (not intollerence). For example, yesterday I came out in hives because someone stired by black coffee with a spoon that had previsously stirred one with milk in it. Once I was served butter which had butter put on them and was unconscious within 30 minutes.

However, I drink lactofree milk and it tastes pretty much like ordinary milk. Indeed this is ordinary cows milk with the lactose removed. If you know that it is lactose which impacts you I would recommend this product.

I only drink Tesco's own brand Soya milk (Unsweetened) or Asda's own Soya milk which is both the same price usually, 59p per carton... I've been dairy free for years now as I used to eat cheese, drink milk, eat yoghurts, icecreams etc... and I was always really Ill afterwards, I get severe migraines and I end up numb on the one side of my body,Puking for hours on end and have to sleep until it goes away on its own, I didnt really think it was dairy products making me ill and I've been like this since I was little :(

If you have coeliac disease you only have a problem with gluten. I have read somewhere that coeliacs might develop lactose intolerance as a secondary problem.

If you have been diagnosed you should have been sent to see a dietician who would help you with your diet.

My friend was diagnosed as coeliac a few years ago and he lost a lot of weight. He put it all back on in a few months. All he did was cut out gluten from his diet. He eats wheat and gluten free bread/rolls/cornflakes.
