Hi
I have had a problem with Dairy for many years and avoided it quite a bit. However since being diagnosed with Coeliac disease last summer, and having got rid of the gluten problem i can now pinpoint more easily how much of a problem dairy is. yesterday i ate some mashed potato that hubby had prepared not knowing that there was milk and butter in it. i usually use rice milk and soya spread. the results proved without doubt i cant tolerate dairy even to the extent i used to. is this normal for the intolerance to get worse or am i just becoming aware?
having said that i did avoid dairy i did love occasional cheddar cheese and really miss it. even from a teenager i can remember getting huge spots and getting very very weepy if i ate to much cheese, does anyone else find this/ sorry i seem to have waffled on a bit...........got loads i want to ask but will wait till later and perhaps search out some answers from the forum.
thanks for listening
julia

Welcome to the site Julia.

I have a range of problems which are based around my immune system. My current restrictions are dairy, soya, gluten (coeliac diet but no diagnosis) alcohol, chocolate and a low salicylate diet too.

This last week I have been really ill with my asthma and sweats and aches I think there may be a situation where since being on coeliac diet my asthma and white blood cell activity is worsening as this has been happening on a regular basis since then. I will know more when i get my blood test results.

All I can ascertain is that is a complex pattern of reactions and adjustments which is slightly different for everyone although there do seem to be patterns and similarities.

My sister has coeliac diagnosis and she has been having the sweats and aches too. Her symptoms do not match mine but sometimes it feels like we echo each other a bit.

I do tend to badly crave and binge on foods and more so on things I am actually made ill by. I have noticed this in my children too.

I find it easier to stop things altogether as after a couple of weeks I dont miss them so much. However I am starting to wonder if it is better to give my system a little bit of something to have a fight with as if I dont it just seems to attack the core of itself.

Lots of coeliacs are dairy intolerant. Soy and corn also seem to be an issue for some.

Being on a coeliac diet has made my stomach, tiredness, and facial swellings better.

Welcome to the site. I have a number of food intolerances which includes lactose and soya.

I was born with lactose intolerance which improved when I was about 2 months old. Over the years my lactose intolerance came and went, mainly because I was keeping to my limit most of the time. I have only realised this in later life. In my 40s the lactose intolerance really kicked in again and over about three years the amount I could tolerate went down. I can't tolerate any lactose at all now.

This will no doubt be a problem when I need medication. I also dread going into hospital as I know they just don't understand intolerances, sad but true.

Hi Julia, I am lactose intolerant and have found that even the smallest amount upsets me now and I used to eat loads of dairy items. Even a couple of painkillers has a bad effect on my belly so I do think that you tolerate less if you avoid it. I often wonder if giving it all up when I first found out dairy was my problem was a mistake, maybe reducing it to a level I could manage would have been better?
