My sister told me once that lactose intolerant people are the normal ones, apparently once youre not a baby and breastfed any more you don't really need milk, and especially not cows milk, thats for baby cows duh..
apparently a very very long time ago most people would have been lactose intolerant just because of the fact that they didnt need the milk..
I don't know if these facts are right but it makes sense to me.
cows milk is for baby cows.

so yeah, just thought you'd like to know.. =)

When i told a friend of mine I posted on a dairy free website she laughed and said "what do you talk about missing cheese?" I said yep that just about sums it up.

If you think about this it does make sense. We are mammals. Look at other mammals eg dogs, chimps etc they all rely on their mother's milk until their systems are mature enough to eat their natural food. Once mammals are weaned they do not drink milk.

Also a friend told me once that cows milk is for calves not humans.

This was mentioned in a round about way on "The Victorian Farm".. When they were making cheese they needed rennet to start the process. The rennet in Victorian times was obtained from the stomach of a freshly killed calf - yuk. They did tell us that it had to be a calf which had not been weaned as once they eat grass their bodies do not produce the rennet.

Other mammals would stop producing the enzyme lactase to break down lactose once they have been weaned too.

It does not really explain why some of us did not produce the lactase enzyme from birth. I survived as I did eventually produce enough of the enzyme to get by. It did affect my growth for a few years though, so I had to catch up with my peers. Now I am totally lactose intolerant but hey I am normal :lol2:

I have a friend who says lactose intolerence is more widely accepted as normal in the afro carribean community. The mums are aware of it and they buy goats milk for people who can not tolerate milk.

I dont know but I have heard somewhere (on the radio I think) that the proteins in goats milk are of a different size and easier to digest also true of sheeps milk. When I started dairy free I tried goats milk and sheeps milk and cheeses but felt I became intolerant to them.

I feel I may experiment again in the future now I know I am coeliac, but give the coeliac diet a chance to heal things first.

I'm trying out goat's milk at the moment. I've been using it for about a week and so far so good. I'm still a bit confused as to why this doesn't upset me in the same way as cow's dairy - but hey, i'm not going to argue!

Goats milk contains lactose so it would affect me.

If you are intolerant to cows milk protein then you would be ok with goats milk, as the protein is slightly different. I guess you might develop a problem with goats milk eventually.

Let us know how you get on with it.
