Hello :D

I realised I was lactose intolerant a couple of weeks ago, and was just searching for some info on dairy free stuff and came across this great place! It looks like it will be very useful!

I had been having increasingly bad pain and cramps in my stomach for the last 6 months or so, which my gp said was probably IBS. It was only because I am dieting and was shocked to realise that I was putting 30 calories worth of milk in every cup of tea that I decided to cut down - and my stomach improved noticeably. I have now switched to rice milk, and I am trying to cut out most other dairy products, and my stomach (touch wood) seems almost completely better! What a relief!

I had a gastric bypass a couple of years ago, and I read somewhere that this can lead to lactose intolerance - although the figures it gave (10%) seemed to be the same as for the general population so not sure how true this is?!

Looking forward to chatting to you all and getting advice and tips!

Welcome to the site.

Have you seen this page on the site?

http://www.dairyfreeuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=738

It gives a list of alternative names for milk.

We are very good with alternatives to most foods which usually contain dairy and specialise in chocolate and ice cream :lol2: I guess you won't be needing that information if you are dieting.

You should also be aware that lactose is in many tablets.

I check everything I buy very carefully.

Having had stomach problems since i was a teenager, i've just found out it was down to dairy. Although I'm relieved to know the reason and finally have confirmed that this is not normal i'm now struggling to adapt my diet to gey rid of dairy. It seems to be in everything!

Its great to find this site and be able to get in touch with others who have a bit of experience. Is there a better alternative to alpro soya? This is all my local shop seems to stock and i'm really not enjoying the taste!

Welcome to the site.

There are various soya milks and they all taste slightly different. I used to like the ones in the chiller section in the supermarket.

A word of warning, I and my daughter have developed a soya intolerance. It is probably a good idea to not use soya based products as replacements for all of the dairy products.

I have tried rice milk but didn't like it in my coffee. I can see that it would be ok on breakfast cereal, which is what my daughter does.

I use oat milk.

Rice and oat milks should be in supermarkets. That said only one of two the large Tescos sell the oat milk here. They keep the rice and oat milks in the long life milk aisle.

There are always health food shops. Some will have things in and some will order things in for you.

Welcome to you both. I have the longlife Sweetened Alpro Soya milk but remember that the chilled tasted better. You certainly have to try a few before you find one you are happy with as they do taste different.

Welcome to you both :)

I also use oat milk, I found that I can get the normal Oatley in Tescos but I have to go to Asda to get the one with added calcium. I've tried all sorts of milk, if it's soya I prefer Alpro chilled, but soya is my least favourite of the options, I'd rather have rice or oat, but it really does depend person to person. My local shop doesn't stock any milk alternatives, so I always have to stock up, which is good about the long life ones as you can keep them in the cupboard and have no worries about running out.

Hi and welcome to the site. It is really good to have some new members to share their experiences with us.

I dont use milks any more. May seem to be some sense in rotating them so you dont develop new intolerences of which soya seems particularly common for people with dairy intolerence. There is also a quinoa milk on the market, havent tried it as it had something else in which I react to.

I use Oatly cream too. I find that if I keep it in the fridge for about 48 hours and then open it, the cream has gone much thicker. :p

Hello again!

Thanks for the welcome!

So do you all think the oat milk is nicer than rice milk then? So far I prefer rice milk, but havnt tried the oat milk yet - I always had skimmed milk though, so that is probably why I like the rice milk where it is more watery.

Has anyone found a guaranteed way to make a cup of tea with rice milk? Sometimes it separates, sometimes it doesnt . . there seems to be no reason why it does or doesnt!

I think it comes down to the temperature of the water. The first time i made tea with rice milk it separated. The next time i brewed the tea and let it cool down for a while before adding the milk. Seemed to work, but i couldn't get used to the taste in tea. However, it seems great in curries!

When I made coffee with soya milk (before I developed an intolerance to soya) and oat milk it always curdled if the coffee was too hot. I guess the same would happen with rice milk.
