My DDs are both dairy intolerant (but also it now seems my DD1 has developed a soya intolerance after having too much soya milk :(). DD1 who is just 4, is desperate for ice cream/yogurts etc so DH went and bought an ice cream maker.

Got it home and nearly all the recipes are with cream and or yogurt!!!

So, has anyone made any ice cream in one of these machines (Magimix) successfully with rice milk or am I wasting my time and money and need a refund before using it?

NB - it does say in the booklet that you can use soya milk as an alternative if dairy intolerant - I'm just wondering if rice milk would be OK as it's clearly not as 'fatty' or creamy....?

PS - If you have made ice cream - can you share any recipes? Thanks.

I have made ice cream with a brand of oat cream which is no longer available. I don't have a machine so had to stir it very hour. The result was very nice.

I have not tried to make it with the brand of oat cream available in the shops now but I am sure it would work. You could give it a try by using the recipes and substituting Oatly cream for milk. I find the cream thickens up if you keep it in the fridge for a day or two before use.

I buy my Oatly cream from Tesco and they stock it next to the Oatly milk. I know that it is not stocked in all Tesco stores.

Thanks Copper. I actually read the instructions properly :p And you can make with milk but just add 2 tablespoons of oil in to make it creamier. We made banana ice cream this afternoon and while it wasn't like shop bought, it really wasn't bad at all and tasted quite nice - very fresh :)

Going to try strawberry tomorrow. The only issue with the machine is it's small and the bowl has to be kept in the freezer so has to be refrozen before you can make a second batch - you can buy additional bowls though so might do that if it becomes a regular thing. For £35 I don't think I can grumble.

It's a good way to get added rice milk and therefore more calcium/protein into my DD1 (and I can even use a bit for DD2 if I wish). We made too much mixture today so made a smoothie with the rest for DD1 and I to drink :)

I popped to Sainsburys today (it's my local supermarket with no others really nearby) and they only had soya based 'cream' that was DF so not an option. I'm sure I can get locally elsewhere though if I try - our local Holland & Barrett isn't v good and the lady isn't v knowledgeable unfortunatley :(

Have you got any other health food shops near you? I find them very helpful and they will order stuff in for you.

Only really Holland & Barrett (which is pretty useless). There is a complementary clinic about 20 mins drive away (where I'm getting soya free bread from) so I'll try there.

Actually, the two I've now made - banana & strawberry are both really nice with rice milk anyway :) I'm so pleased we bought the machine - DD1 is in heaven and I'm happy as she's getting fruit and some added calcium at the same time!
