Just wondering about this. It's a long story but my DD1 (4 yrs), who is dairy intolerant, now appears to have an intolerance to soya which has developed over time. My DD2 is 1 yr and dairy intolerant and the Cons wants me to wean her onto soya milk (she is breastfed and has Nutramigen in food).
I've read so much conflicting advice and I really don't know what to do for the best  The Cons thinks DD1's soya intolerance is due to a food challenge/reintro of cows milk and that it's temporary as a result
So, how many of you/yours are dairy intolerant but can have soya/soya milk OK? I've heard from a few people on here already but just wondered at the scale of this.
Thanks for your help.

When my son was diagnosed with his dairy allergy we were advised to avoid soya also. He had a soya challenge at 19 months which he failed and I continued to eliminate soya from his diet. I rechallenged him at 22 months and he passed so can now have soya yoghurts and other soya products. He hates soya milk though and I give him oat milk (oatly brand)

I am dairy allergic and soya intolerant. My Dr says they often go 'hand in hand'.

what is the difference between milk protein and lactose? And how does a Dr tell if it is an allergy or an intolerance? How would you know if Soya was a problem? What is a "dairy challenge" and how do you know if you pass or fail it? Sorry so many questions I just get over excited to see people talking about this!

Lactose is the natural sugar in milk. Milk also contains proteins. They are two different chemical structures.
Intolerances are usually found by keeping a food diary. Once a suspect food is identified it is removed form the diet and a food diary kept again to see if there are still reactions. Lactose intolerance can be tested for in a hospital.
Allergies can be tested for usually in a hospital. Many years ago I was tested for hay fever. I had small amounts of different pollens injected on my arm. Within a very short time they all came up in lumps which was a positive reaction. I was allergic to every type of pollen, tree, grass, flowers etc and dust. I have recently grown out of hayfever.

Kippytime - having read up on the internet it seems that the reactions to soy are very similar to those for dairy.
A "Dairy challenge" is where you reintroduce something containing dairy back into your diet - literally "challenging" your body with it - if you see the return of the old reaction to it then it is deemed a failure, but if there is no reaction then it is a success and it is fine to use that product again!

Oh forgot to say that I think my 4 month old is allergic to soy as well as dairy through my breast milk. I am having all sorts of problems as my health visitor and my doctor refuse to believe that my baby could possibly be reacting to anything in my breast milk.

The HV and Doctor should know better than that! Some people here have had to go on a dairy free diet as they were breast feeding and their babies were reacting to dairy.
I guess the only way you can try and change their minds is to keep a food diary and try and cut out soya from your diet. This is not easy as a lot of foods contain soya lecithins. If you manage to go soya free and your baby is happier you will have the food diary to show the HV and Doctor.
I hope things improve soon.

I am dairy and soya intolerant but intend to retest the soya this summer sometime. I weaned my eldest son onto soya after 18 months of breastfeeding as he seemed to have a very atopic system, my guess is he still does, I am worried it may have caused him fertility problems as he then had undescended testes which were not fully diagnosed until he was 8.
I am intolerant to both. I only became intolerant to soya milk after having a "bad one". I was drinking it in coffee and started feeling sick. I couldn't taste it but when I smelt the carton, there was definitely something wrong with it.
