I opened a bottle of wine last night - Eagle Ridge Zinfandel Blush from Aldi, it was on offer so thought i would give it a try. Trying to educate myself a bit on wine i thought i'd read the label and was absolutely amazed by the Allergen information. - Contains Sulphities and traces of egg and milk.

Why or why would there be any egg or milk in Rose wine.

All I can think of is they were abit short of folks in Italy to crush the fruit so they had chickens and cows trampling over the strawberries, raspberries and melon to get the juice out. I only had one glass honest :lol2::wine:

Is this allergen labelling gone bonkers or is it possible?

I can't see how wine could contain contain egg or milk.

I hope the wine tasted nice.

Unfortunately it can. I used to work at a wine farm in the sales department as a student, so got to chat to the wine maker about how they make wine. Before wine is bottled it needs "fining" - a process that removes tannins and clarifies the wine. The fining agent (egg white, milk or gelatine) captures the impurities and these sink to the bottom of the tank. The wine is filtered before bottling, but obviously for someone very allergic the risk remains. The farm I worked for used isinglass which is fish gelatine, but I believe the quantity of eggs used is 2 per barrel and a barrel makes about 300 bottles of wine.
