Hey guys,
As I am new to dairy free (ins and outs explained in my hello post!) I have no idea if there is any 'safe' ice cream, I am not doing to bad on the chocolate front (thank goodness!) But I adore ice cream and would be gutted if I could never eat it again

I don't think I am totally lactose intolerant but I really don't want to risk a tub of Ben and Jerry's! though I'd love to LOL I know I'd suffer!

Any information welcome :)
Thanks xxx

All the Tesco stores here sell Swedish Glace, an ice cream made with soya. It is really nice. Tesco only sell vanilla but there are other yummy flavours. A local health food shop here stocks other flavours.

The Swedish Glace should stand out as it comes in a black octagonal box.

I can't eat this any more as I have developed a soya intolerance

Oh wow.. i'll have a look for that. Thank you!

How do you cope with dairy and soya intolerance?? everything I have been eating that has no dairy, has soya
What sort of things do you eat?
Sorry for the questions, I am really curious :) x

Swedish Glace have also started doing a Neapolitan ice cream, its in a different shaped box to the normal octagonal boxes. I found some in Morrisons. Holland & Barrett tend to stock most of the flavoured varieties, although I prefer the vanilla.

I cope very well with dairy intolerance. Soya is a bit more of a challenge. I can't eat anything made from soya eg Swedish Glace ice cream. I can eat things which have soya lecithin in them but I have to be careful no to eat too much. Some of the chocolate I eat contains soya lecithin so that stops me from eating too much chocolate :lol2:

I make my own cakes. I am currently able to eat the following biscuits lemon puffs (taste a bit odd if eaten with a cup of coffee and even stranger with hot chocolate :lol2: ), Tesco cheap Bourbons, and Tesco cheap digestives. I have not eaten party rings lately but they used to be ok too.

I bake my own bread.

I like most sorbets. I have made ice cream using oat cream instead of milk. It is a bit hit and miss getting it to taste nice. I over did the coffee once.

I use oat milk and oat cream.

My top tip, be careful with your dairy replacement. Try not to replace everything with soya. It might be best to have a rotating system ie oat milk one week, soya the next, rice the next then back to the beginning.

My eldest daughter and I did not replace all dairy with soya and we have both developed an intolerance to soya.

wow it's all very scary stuff, I have no idea if what I am doing is the right thing! I don't want to become intolerant to other things as well as dairy. Dairy is hard enough for me at the moment lol

It's good to hear what people have to do when they are intolerant to food types, thank you for sharing with me :) I have never even heard of oat milk/cream
I am sure I will come across these things, I guess it's not until you're looking that you find! x

Tesco here have Oatly milk in the long life milk aisle. They have rice milk in the Free From aisle. There are two versions of Oatly milk, one with and one without added calcium.

We have two Tesco Super Stores here and only one of them sells the Oatly cream! The oatly cream and the soya based cream are both in the long life milk aisle.

It is all very confusing when you first start.

I use the Oatly milk with added calcium. I also have some Tesco long life orange juice with added calcium. I try to remember to take a calcium tablet every day (failed miserably for some weeks now) I don't drink enough milk and orange to give me my daily calcium. I don't want to over do the tablets though as they can do other damage.

Nothing is easy.

I dread the day I need tablets from the GP as many contain lactose

Oh my word copper thats mad... I really hope I don't become totally intolerant of lactose, I am on quite a lot of tablets from GP as I have MS:confused:

I also hope I don't become allergic to soya, as i'm quite finicky with food already without the added inconvenience lol

I have been having the milk with the lactose taken out lactlose I think it's called... it's quite palatable, so I think i'm okay with that! so far anyway lol

The milk that i have heard about with the lactose taken out is called lactofree. They have recently started doing a lactofree cheese which is rather nice and melts, which is alot better than some of the cheese substitutes.

I thought I was okay with soya until recently when I went on yet another weight loss mission. Instead of just having my normal soya milk with breakfast and a soya desert at lunch I upped it and was having possibly 3 deserts and some chocolate milk ieach day After around 3 weeks and a number of episodes of being ill - you know the ones where you suddenly need the loo - I realised it must be down to the soya increase. Back on my normal amount I am ok again. Thing is I stopped loosing weight again - I'd rather be well though.

You will find out how much you can tolerate of all these things, afraid it is by trial and I am sure you will have a couple of slip ups. It does get easier honest but it is worth it. I just wish I'd found out what my problem was years earlier though, instead of accepting it was IBS and being told i'd just have to live with it by the medical profession.

Yes Jill, I was told I had IBS about 2 years ago I have only had 2 years of being told, not years and years, thankfully I found out about the lactose relatively quickly I guess

I am sure I will have may errors along the way... but I guess I will never know unless I do! x

Sorry the milk I have been having is called lacofree, I get mixed up with the names as I have been looking into all the different varieties there are on the net!

When I had to start cutting down on dairy I used to use Lactofree (some years ago). The small print on the carton said it contained a very very small amount of lactose and that was enough to make me ill eventually.

Oh dear Copper :( I hope it doesn't get like that for me, I'm worried now lol

I am not sure that anybody here is bad as me when it comes to the amount of lactose they can tolerate, so there is hope for you. :)

I'm not sure how intolerant to lactose I am, but I know I can't have it in tablets, but I've never had lactofree because of the milk protein. Anyway back to the ice-creams- booja booja do a gorgeous chocolate ice-cream, but it's rather expensive, but it really does taste divine. Rice ice-cream also exists, and there's a lovely strawberry variety in something like Rice 'n' creamy or some pun on the words rice and ice, which I can't quite remember.
I personally really like sorbert most of which are LF, but I do know that Carte Dor have borught some out which aren't, which really does go against the concept of sorbet, but I shall restrain from that rant!!

Thank you for the advice... I have found the ice cream in Holland and Barratt, though I haven't bought any yet... I, at least know it's there for when I have a craving :p
Also if these lactose enzyme tablets work, I may even still be able to have my beloved Ben and Jerry's once in a while!

Holland and Barret have a few choices of flavours for the dairy free ice cream. Sainsbury also does a swedish glace, chocolate covered ice cream on a stick. There are 6 in a box for around £2.50. They are really really good!

I saw some gluten free ice cream cones in Sainsburys, I think they were Barkat. I will check if they are dairy free also, I think they are...

Hi
Just found this site seems to have some good advice. My wife has been Alergic to Dairy (Lactose Intolerent) must be 25 years now.It started with not being able to finish a meal without going to the loo.then advancing to a form of Epilectic fit every time she would have any, no matter how small amounts of Cassein, Casseinates.Lactose.Whey (Dairy products). It was difficult at the start to shop. Safeways being the first that I found to mark there own products Dairy Free. But now it is not to bad just need to keep an eye out that if you have brought it before and the packing has changed so may have the ingredients. I expect 95% of items in our household is dairy free. just a bit more expensive. My wife now can eat the same as anyone else most of the time. You do have to make sure medication is ok as they use Lactose as a binding agent. So if you have just found out you are Lactose Intolerent (Dairy Free) dont despair there is plenty out there for you.:)
