My son has been put on a dairy free diet. He is not intolerant , he just suffers with extreme constipation. I could really do with some help as he would live on macarroni chesse and smarties if you let him. He is a really fussy eater at the best of times and i dont even know where to begin
Hi Daisy
My daughter suffered badly from constipation too and this got a whole lot better when she went dairy free. In fact we discovered the real problem with milk when she had a dose of Lactulose (lactose based medicine to make you go) as it caused her to be in agony. She is intolerant to cow's milk protein and suffers constipation, stomach pains and disturbed sleep if she has even the smallest amount of milk (no sickness, rashes or diarrhoea as in common cases of lactose intolerance).
Smarties can be replaced with Allergycare Whizzers chocolate beans which are a washed out looking dairy free version of Smarties (no nasty colourings). Macaroni cheese is a different matter altogether, no problem with the pasta but dairy free cheeses are a poor substitute for the real thing. You could try using soya/oat milk together with grated Cheezly (or Parmesano) and a little cornflour to make a cheese sauce but it wouldn't taste the same. I think yeast powder from health food shops is supposed to be quite cheesy too.
Most recipes can be adapted to use dairy free margarine and alternative milks but it means you have to be a bit more inventive in the kitchen and really check out all the ready made products when you go shopping.
If you want to know about any other products, just ask on here, there will no doubt be someone who knows the answer.
