HI there :)
I'm only on the dairyfree site from thime to time, nut I find it really useful to see how other people manage with dairy intolerance. I have bee lactose intolerant for, i think it is five years, but I am a bit better than I once was and able to manage a wee bit of dairy here and there. I thought I would post a list of lots of things I like to eat that are dairyfree as I spend so-o-o- much time looking at labels and remembering which shops sell which products locally. Maybe it'll save someone a bit of time or find something nice to eat you haven't come across before. I hope so :)
The best Soya I have found is Markies, they also have a banana cake which is great too.
The new range of stuff from lactofree is brill. I'm so impressed with the hard cheese: just like cheddar. They have it in my local Sainsburys. For so long I have not liked and so avoided vegan cheese equivalents for their taste and don't melt when cooking. This cheese is great. The soft cheese is good too, but only keeps for five days or so. Ususally I get Tofutti spreading cheese instead as it keeps for ages (Health store for that. Lots of different flavours) The tofutti cheese singles are just like "the real thing" too.
In all supermarkets Swedish Glace vanilla ice cream is for sale. Woohoo! This is lovely. Cracking Choc sauce is dairyfree too. (choc flavour by far the best!):p The rasperberry swedish glace in the health shop is really nice too. I have also done a good job of adding rum and raisins to the vanilla. You can then stick it back in the freezer for a couple of hours and hey presto!!!
When going for a cuppa to friends and family I have rice dream in my tea. This is great cause it keeps for a week in their fridge and it comes in small-ish cartons.
In Lidl I have noticed that they have huge maderia cakes which are quite cheap and lots of varieties and are dairy free. Also the luxury coleslaw is no longer dairy free unfort, but the Floria Coleslaw is and is really nice. (Don't like their soya though!)
They have stuffed pasta in the fridge in Aldi that hasn't any milk in the ingredients. (Can't remember the flavour. Maybe chicken and bacon??)
Alpro custard is good to and the deserts too. I have found the cream not so nice but makes a brilliant carbonara sauce!!! I'll post the recipe!
Covent Garden Tomato and Basil soup is my new favourite thing. Cheapest dairy free soup I can find is Tesco light choices chicken and Sweetcorn. Not bad at all.
As a treat I like Green and Blacks dark chocolate esp Maya Gold. Although there is now a small amount of milk in there, I can manage this small amount. Also After Eight Munchies are in most newsagents and sweet shops. Holland and Barrett flapjack are nice and some are dairyfree. I always go for the Apple and Sultana. Their lactase tablets I find good too. There are other brands I have tried, but I like these best as I can carry them in my bag and they don't disintegrate like the chalky or chewable ones. It's so-o-o good to have tablets so that I can treat myself to something that I want or have the same food with the rest of my family sometimes.
Some of the things I mentioned might have a trace of milk and some are totally free from dairy, but for anyone with a similar lactose intolerence to myself (can manage a very small amount) I hope these tips are of help. One thing that's driving me mad just now is how much my boyfriend keeps telling me how good Muller crunch corner are!!!!! :bash: Anyone got any good ideas how to recreate one?? Sojasun vanilla "yoghurt" is nice. Anyone know of any choc free coco pops or something??
Cheers!!
Susan
