My grandson 6 months old is gluten and dairy intolerant , he was given a small bit of chocolate icing 5 days ago which contained a minute dose of skim milk powder , the piece was no bigger then a pea . 24 hours later he was runny nosed and vommiting and screaming and is still sick 5 days later . could the icing be the cause as it was such a small amount?

Yes it is possible :(. Did the icing have a crumb of cake on it too? That would be enough to make him ill too.

I am intolerant to dairy and just using the wrong margarine on a bread roll made me feel ill.

I am also soya intolerant and even the soya lecithin in a food is enough to make me feel ill if I eat too much. I can only eat a small amount of food which contains soya lecithin.

5 days is a long time to be reacting though so maybe he should get checked by a doctor.

Let us know how he is doing.

would a can of baby food which is custard and banana flavour be okay. because i would think that would be the worst thing to be feeding him . he can have that but not custard and egg. the custard is made with full cream milk.

Hi Bren

It is hard to cope with dairy free at first but it does get easier. It must be more of a worry when it is a baby that has an allergy/intolerance.

The only way to work out if any shop bought food is ok is to read the list of the ingredients on the packet/tin etc. I guess they have to list them in New Zealand.

What you need to look for is a anything on the list that is an alternative name for dairy. We have a list of alternative names for dairy here

http://www.dairyfreeuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=738

When we all first started shopping for dairy free foods we printed the list out and then took it to the shops. We read the ingredients list and if we were not sure about something we checked with the print out.

I hope that this helps.

We also have a similar list for egg here

As for wheat I guess that should be more obvious. Gluten is found in some things here which could come from wheat so is also to be avoided.

I hope your grandson is better after the icing episode.

If you need any more help please ask.

Hi Bren, I agree it is strange that the custard and banana baby food is ok. Especially if it says it is made with full cream milk.

DEAR BREN THE FOLLOWING I FOUND ON THE WEB WHEN LOOKING UP LACTOSE INTOLERANCE. I HAD COLIC AS A BABY AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD SORE THROATS AND MY VOICE HAS BEEN WEAKENED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS I HAVE TAKEN MORE DAIRY PRODUCTS WRONGLY HAS I HAD A CALCIUM DEFICIENCY AND WAS PRESCRIBED TABLETS TO CORRECT THIS THAT PLUS LACTOSE IN MY MEDICATION AS A FILLER I AM NOW COMPLETELY LACTOSE INTOLERANCE AND AVIOD IT COMPLETELY
Points to Remember

Lactose intolerance is the inability or insufficient ability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products.
Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which is produced by the cells lining the small intestine.
Not all people with lactase deficiency have digestive symptoms, but those who do may have lactose intolerance.
Most people with lactose intolerance can tolerate some amount of lactose in their diet.
People with lactose intolerance may feel uncomfortable after consuming milk and milk products. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, gas, diarrhea, and nausea.
The symptoms of lactose intolerance can be managed with dietary changes.
Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is a concern for people with lactose intolerance when the intake of milk and milk products is limited. Many foods can provide the calcium and other nutrients the body needs.
Talking with a doctor or registered dietitian may be helpful in planning a balanced diet that provides an adequate amount of nutrients—including calcium and vitamin D—and minimizes discomfort. A health professional can determine whether calcium and other dietary supplements are needed.
Milk and milk products are often added to processed foods. Checking the ingredients on food labels is helpful in finding possible sources of lactose in food products.

I used to think I only had lactose intolerance but I have discovered that I am intolerant to the milk proteins too :(

I avoid all dairy products. I never knowlingly eat anything that contains anything on the list of alternative names for dairy.

I am so lactose intolerant that I react to lactose in tablets. I react to a small amount of Flora margarine.

This is my simple guide to lactose intolerance:-

Lactose intolerance - this is due to the absence of (or very limited amount of ) the enzyme lactase. Lactose is a large molecule and can't be absorbed by the large intestine. The enzyme in the small intestine breaks down this large molecule into two smaller ones. Think of a fine sieve and flour and peas. The sieve is the large intestine, the flour is the two smaller molecules and the peas are lactose. The lactose goes through the system fermenting and so produces wind and bloating.

Bren, how awful for you to have a baby with this allergy. my son is now 25 and has a new bwby of his own who seems to get 'phlegmmy' on his shop bought baby milk. my son was totally dairy allergic as a baby and would react to the smallest amount of egg or milk products; also food colourings. your local hospital should be able to offer you a list of store bought foods that you can safely buy to reduce the need to read every label. mind boggling terms made my shopping a nightmare and well meaning family members were a trial to educate; but it CAN be done and he grew out of his asthma reactions that would hospitalise him when he was 7. as he grows up a 'safe' treat could be mint imperials which are sugar and mint, stay away from icing as it often has preservatives etc added on shopbought products. hope this helps and good luck. :-)
