I haven't tried Nutramigen but I think you can use it in just the same way as wysoy. If you ring the customer information line they should have a recipe booklet and information leaflets that they can send you (my HV gave me one when my daughter was first put on a milk free diet).

Prepare yourself for the fact that Nutramigen is even more stinky and disgusting than Wysoy and don't be surprised if your baby rejects it (something I have heard from others who have tried it). I think more doctors are prescribing hypoallergenic formulas because of recent scares with soya and an increase in soya intolerance.

PS nothing has ever produced green poo in my daughter since she was a newborn and was passing meconium.

Thank you pam for your help.Milly hated nutramigen ,it has the aroma of pork scratchings and yes the tin was right millys poo was a fab shade of khaki !!!. How do i know if milly is soy protein intolerant as well. Is their any more formula apart from wysoy / nutramigen ? If anyone likes liquid pork scratchings i have 1-2 pints going FREE!

There is another soya formula produced by one of the main 3 (Wysoy is made by SMA so it might be Farleys, possibly called Infasoy), but this is soya again. I think that there has been a high incidence of milk intolerant children also becoming intolerant to soya when they have suddenly had a soya rich diet, so doctors are avoiding this by offering hypoallergenic milks instead.

There is an alternative to nutramigen, it begins with p and ends in 'mil' I think but I'm not sure what the full name is, this is likely to smell just as bad as the other though.

My daughter has been on Wysoy for nearly 5 years and has been ok, as have many others, so I think doctors are being over cautious really.

You really need to get a referral to a dietitian to look at alternatives and to ensure that your daughter gets all the nutrients she needs.

Could you be 'cruel to be kind' and persevere with the nutramigen until she gets used to it and starts accepting it?

Some people find that goats milk can be tolerated where cows milk can't so that could be another avenue for you to try.

Hi

My son was put on Infasoy after being diagnosed milk intolerant. A month after he was diagnosed as Soya intolerant(he was 4 months old). The poor little mite is now on a prescription only milk named Pregestimil. It's a hydrolised milk which means the lactose has been removed. Smells a bit like old cheese, but Sam just loves it.

Hang in there, it does get better!

NUTRAMIGEN -
Lactose free and milk-protein free
There is a stage 1 and stage 2 formula milk

Yes you can prepare feeds in advance and keep them in the frigde the same as any other forumla milk, but the Nutramigen smells HORRIBLE. Tastes horrible too, my 2-yr old son won't drink it, but it's the only "milk" he can have!

So I disguise it in jelly, or add Nesquik banana or strawberry powder and mix it into his breakfast cereal (Weetabix or ReadyBrek, has to be something that mixes). Also try adding mashed banana to the milk and breakfast cereal mix.

> How do i know if milly is soy protein intolerant as well.

I tried my son on Infasoy for a month and the way I found that he sa soya protein intolerant was that he did not eat anything except breakfast for the entire month! That's how we found out :-)

Hope that helps,
Kelly.

hi - my daughter is 19 months old and intolerant to both milk and soya. she has been placed on neocate advance, but for smaller babies they suggest straight neocate. both of which can be made up and last for 24 hours.

dont know whether that would have been of help

hi my son is 8 months and has been on cow and gate infa soya since he was a few moths old tryed wysoy at first but it went stright through i think all soya milk makes your childs poo smell worse than others and some times my sons was a different colour, i know by going into some health shops there are different kinds of baby milk i also found that some local chemists do sell that kind of baby milk your after.

My 11 month old son is on Nutramigen and yes it does smell and taste disgusting. I haven't noticed that his stools are green though. His older brother was on a Nestle formula called Nan HA that didn't smell or taste quite that bad. The bad news is that you are unlikely to be able to get a prescription for it, as it has only recently been introduced in the UK (we were using it in South Africa). You would also have to hunt around for a pharmacy that could order it for you. I think Nestle told me that either Moss or Lloyds pharmacies stock it, but can remember which.

My 9 month old son is on nutramigen, I breastfed but did not have enough to satisfy him! Bearing in mind my first son (who is now 5 and has grown out of his milk intolerence) had a milk intolerance, I was aware that no.2 could also have it but not definately. So at 1 week old I tried him with ordinary formula - the first feed did not react but as in many reaction cases the 2nd exposure is the one to be aware of - and he came out in a red rash from top to toe. I had great difficulty in convincing the G.P. that this was a milk intolerance, but to get rid of me! gave me a prescription for nutramigen. I even had to tell him how to spell it!! With my first son I put ribena in to disguise the taste (naughty I know but needs must) and weaned it down to pure formula over a month, but with the 2nd he had it from early on so no problems. I am at present trying him on soya, I thuoght he developed a rash but my husband noticed a few spots the day before so I tried it again - no rash but his poos are very soft and offensive. I am going to contact my dietician to ask her advice whether this is a sign of intolerance or normal for soya. Has anyone else experienced this with soya?

Hi Monaliza

My daughter who's three in may,had terrible colic and constipation, swiftly followed by the runs, never 'normal' stools. I was convinced she was intolerant to dairy but no-one would listen to me. My health visitor bought me some Cow and Gate Omneo to try before I got to the stage of just buying some soya based formula and trying that. All the health professionals I came accross seemed to be really anti-soya and seemed to think I should just struggle on with a baby who cried all day and night. Megan was obviously in pain and I felt pretty hopeless as her mother. As soon as she started the Omneo she was a completely different baby, she would lie back and take her feeds without squirming and wriggling constantly. Within 24 hours she was sleeping through the night! Omneo isn't dairy free, but the proteins that babies find hard to digest and break down have already been broken down in this formula. Obviously if you know for sure that your 3 month old is allergic to dairy produce then Omneo is going to be to useless to you.
Good luck and I hope you get some answers soon.
Lynda

My four year old is intolerant of milk and soya - same old story - doctors / health visitors very unhelpful and largely ignorant of the problems and how to solve them. I read somewhere on the internet once that 40% of milk intolerant children are also soya intolerant. One more knowledgeable doctor told me that nowadays doctors do not tend to prescribe soya based formular instead because of the high percentage of children who are also likely to be soya intolerant. My daughter suffered particularly from constipation when she had the probelm and we endured about 2 years of sleepless nights (she didnt sleep for more than 2 hours at a time) before we realsied the problem - I can sympathise with you definately on this!!

If you need any more advise please ask - sounds like you have similar problems to the ones I have faced in the past

Most GPs just don't have a clue. If you think that your little one is intolerant to both milk and soya you need a hypo-allergenic formula like Nutramigen. If your doctor won't prescribe it then ask for an urgent referral to see a paediatric dietician (you should do anyway with major dietary problems). Be warned though, this stuff stinks and babies aren't too keen on it, you will need to persevere through any initial rejection. My daughter was fortunately ok with Wysoy and that smells bad enough!
