For my 3year old son

Hi, i have just signed up to this page today, as my son has just been diagnosed with a dairy allergy, and he has been put on a 'dairy free' diet. He is also allergic to all nuts aswell.

So.... i went shopping today to try and find some products that i could give my son. Its not as easy as i thought:( but i did get a few things, like Soya milk, Lacto free yoghurts and 'vitalite' spread.

Once i finally got home after an hour of staring at the shelves in the supermarket, i decided to go on-line, and found this site, which seems great :thumbsup: I didnt realise that dairy/lactose was in sooooo many different foods!!

Could someone please advise me of the best alternatives for the following products (bearing in mind my son is 3!), and what shops sell them.

* crisps
* chocolate
* cheese
* soft cheese (like dairylee dunkers)

I cant think of any others, but im sure over the next few days i will be stuggling!

Thanks in advance to anyone who replys!! :)

oh and sorry for blabbing on!! (HEHE)

Sam x

forgot to say... he's on the dairy free diet as he has really bad eczema, and has been admitted to hospital several times, (sometimes for up to 10days at a time) :(

Welcome to the site.

I hope the dairy free diet keeps him well and out of hospital.

Have you seen the list of alternative names for dairy which you need to check for on labels? If not it is here

I eat Kettle chips, plain or salt and balsamic vinegar as they are dairy free. They are thicker than the usual crisps and taste really nice. I have tried Tesco own salt and vinegar as they are dairy free but they are not as nice as Kettle chips.

Alternative chocolate made using soya can be found in the free from aisles of most supermarkets. There are small chocolate bars and chocolate buttons. My local health food shop also sells dairy free smarties which are not brightly coloured but taste very nice.

Finding an alternative to cheese is hard as most taste vile. I have not bothered with these for years. You can get hard cheese alternatives usually only in health food shops. They are kept in the fridge in the health food shops. They also sell soft spreadable cheese alternatives and these are actually quite nice.

I hope that this helps. Hopefully others will be able to add to my suggestions.
