I have posted about problems ive been having with my 4month olds feeding and today finally got to see dietician, seems he has a cows milk allergy & not a lactose intollerance.

He is on Nurtamigen formula, but he cries when I try to give it him, its horrid stuff. Any other babies on it?

She said I can start weaning him as long as I make my own food, which I will anyway.

Thanks for all your help.

Julie :P

I'm glad you finally got to the bottom of your problems, hopefully things will improve from now on.

Try to persevere with the Nutramigen, I'm told it is horrid but with a bit of luck once your baby gets used to the taste he will be ok with it. If you're worried about his lack of intake after a few days you'll have to go back to the doctor (unless you have a contact number for the dietician) but there aren't that many alternatives for babies of that age. I don't think you have a problem with soya so they might let you try that instead if he really won't take to the Nutramigen. You must continue to use formula of one type or another though as cartons of soya, rice or oat milk don't contain nearly enough calories and nutrients to sustain a growing baby and there have been cases of sever malnutrition where parents have avoided formula in this way.

I'm sure we'll be seeing lots more of you on this site once you start weaning and looking at new foods to introduce.

Good luck.

Thanks Pam for your reply.

He has taken 3 so far since 2pm so thats good, I am going to give him his 4th bottle soon before bed. He hated it at first but now he is happy enough which is a relief.

Looking foward to weaning him now this is sorted. Will probably start in the next couple of weeks once he is settled on this milk.

Look forward to chatting to you more in the future.

Julie :)

Yes Nutramigen is horrible (and really expensive) but it does seem to do the job - my son has been on this since he was about 18 months and it has done the job with his intolerance to milk protein.

Although he hates it and I have to disguise it with banana powder, straberry powder, etc. (you know, those milkshake flavours that thankfully contain no milk!) Course I can do this now because he is older but as a baby he just refused to drink it.

Maybe you can try adding flavourings, even fruit to the Nutramigen milk to make it more appealing.

I have also tried various times to make rice pudding, ice-cream, etc. with this Nutramigen milk and all attempts have been unsuccessful.

Just bear in mind as your baby gets older that there are too stages of Nutramigen, just like the initial one and the follow-on for when your baby is a little older (both just as horrible unfortunately), but I only found out about this second stage recently, so wanted to make you aware of it.

Kelly.

HI,

Thanks for your reply, I had heard of a 2nd stage and at 6 mths I shall suggest this to my GP rather than going on Soya formula which I would prefer to avoid.

He is taking the milk ok now which is a relief.
