I have seen these in my local health food shop. I am lactose intolerant so what is stopping me from taking these apart form the cost? Has anybody heard anything about these tablets?
I have been given a box of chocolates as a thank you for my hard work at "work" - oh what torture. I know that if I eat just one I will feel sick. I think I will be buying some lactase tablets next week and testing them out. If they work I could use them for those odd days out when I don't want to starve or carry loads of food around.

I've not heard of anyone taking these tablets, but floliketheriver tried some similar tablets last year and posted here experience of them here (http://www.dairyfree.org.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=94&hl=)
From what i've read they will work for people who have lactose intolerance, but not for people who have milk allergies (mainly milk proteins).
If you do try them, post your results here. I'm sure that a lot of the members here will be interested if they work for you or not.

I will look at the lactase tablets in more detail next week and then carry out my experiment. I will test these tablets out on a day when I have time and strength to feel ill  I wonder if getting the balance between lactose intake and tablet is going to be difficult.
I will report on my experience.
Hi Copper,
Looking forward to the results of your experiment. If they work it could offer a more positive outlook for lactose intolerance sufferers.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Lan.

Good luck with your experiment Copper andI hope it works for you. :)
I found out last week that my problem is down to a lactose intolerance and was thinking about trying these lactase tablets myself, but was a little unsure about dosage etc. I intend to go check them out in the health food shops in the next week or so. So i will report on my findings if I buy them.
I have just been reading some comments about lactase tablets on the www.lactose.co.uk website. Appears that alot of people have difficulty with them :( - but i suppose everyone is different.

I have a jar of lactase tablets! They are "Lifeplan lactase enzyme capsules" They cost me £4-69 so they had better work :) The directions are to take one or two capsules, with a little cold liquid immediately before eating foods which contain milk and dairy.
Lifeplan have a website
http://www.lifeplan.co.uk
I am just waiting for the right time to test the capsules out. I will let you know how I get on.
good luck, let us know how you get on. i'd give it a few goes before you decide any good or not so that you can discount any psychosomatic reactions. ie get so worked up that you effectively create the bad reaction. sorry didn't mean to teach you to suck eggs. it would be great to think we could eat without worry just by popping the occasional pill. maybe i'm too much of a cynic but things aren't normally that easy. i'm open to be suprised though.
a pessimist can be suprised an optimist can only be disappointed!!
have fun

Ok I am about to cook my dinner and try out the lactase tablets. I am sure that I will be fine - think positive and all that.

Looking good so far. Had dinner at 7pm and now off to bed as it is nearly midnight. Feel fine - I would normally be feeling ill by now.

Well here I am still feeling good. The lactase worked for me. I did only have one small slice of cheese so maybe I should test myself with more dairy product. What I am aiming for is to be able to go out and eat a cheese sandwich like "normal" people and not pay for it later. I would not be brave enough to eat loads of dairy product as I am sure I would suffer.
Good on you Copper for being brave enough to try. It would take a lot of persuading for me to try that. The elimination diet and dairy reaction is still too raw for me.
Keep us posted on how you go and how much dairy you are able to eat. Myself, I would love to go out and be able to have anything on the menu, rather than just one or two as I class 'boring' meals. My favourite was always lasagne and would love to be able to eat that again. Dairy free lasagne is nice, but doesn't quite hit the 'Absolutely Fabulous' mark.
Good luck.

:D
good news. as you say you'll have to try again with slightly more. it's the only way and it's sensible, let your body adjust slowly. any quick fixes tend not to work in the long run. so try again with a larger peice of cheese and so on. good luck.

I have taken tablets which are avaliable from www.nutricentre.com (http://www.nutricentre.com/) called Say Yes to Dairy. They are great and taste of vanilla. Have one before or during your cheesy pizza and so far so good for me and I have felt fine !! However, I would recommend that you use these for special occasions. If your body is not meant to take lactose - then do not force it too often !
Thanks for letting us know Lyndsey.
I won't be trying the tablets mind as was very ill last time I brought dairy in and for what? I didn't find the dairy foods tasted that good anymore. I really couldn't understand what I saw in them, but good on you for trying and certainly succeeding.
Kind Regards,
Lan.
i'm afraid i'm a coward. if it isn't broke don't fix it. i can survive without dairy so, although life would be a little easier, i think i'll pass. knowing me i'd only have a psychosomatic reaction anyway so the tablets wouldn't help! not unless they work on your brain!
good on anyone who does try though. just because something doesn't work for me doesn't mean i'd put anyone else off trying.

I am a biology technician in a college so I work with enzymes now and again. I know how they work and could see no reason why lactase should not work. I have to say I was a bit worried as enzymes (lactase is an enzyme) have optimum temperatures and pH to work well, I was introducing lactase into my system earlier than in a "normal" person and so the lactase would have to survive the acid in the stomach.
People with cystic fibrosis take a cocktail of digestive enzymes before each meal and it works for them.
Matt you must try and think positively :)
I only intend to use lactase for those days out when I don't want to carry a load of food with me. My youngest daughter says she can't invite me to stay as I can't eat anything. :(
Hi Copper,
Am thinking of trying the lactase tablets to find out if I am lactose intolerant. If I do have dairy with them mind, I would have to have a Dominio's pizza. Would love to go out and share some food with Steve, rather than have safe food to myself.
Have definitely changed my attitude from earlier posts. If I do this I will account my every move and let you know how it goes.
Kind Regards,
Lan. :D
Hi all,
Have my first lactose tablets and am about to go. Never thought I would be saying that.
Not looking forward to it as I know there is a chance I might be ill. Could be allergic to milk proteins and not intolerant to lactose. I guess this is an easy way to find out which.
Am just worried that I will be too ill for work as no-one seems to understand. However now Iris has high cholestrol everyone has to know. When everyone was fine she didn't care about food problems. Really annoys me.
Just glad I have people to talk to.
Lan.
P.S. Thanks for listening.

Lan I really hope it works for you. I hope that you have tried a small amount of dairy product as a test and not gone for the pizza, cream cake and milky coffee all in one go :)
i'm with copper good luck but i hope you didn't go for it! mind you if you did and coped with that then anything else will be simple.
ofcourse they're sympathetic to the person with high collestral. chances are she only has that because she eats too damn much whereas we have no control. people being people means that they can understand the first and see how to beat it. they have no idea about allergies and intolerances. too many people have jumped on the bandwagon claiming to have problems when they don't. it's the bad back thing, can't see it so people think you're lying to get sympathy.
anyhow, let us know how it went. i hope it's good news.

Hi Lan
So, how did you get on with the lactase? Im dying to hear how it went.
Hi all,
The tablets are not going too bad. I ate macaroni cheese on the Friday and had Lasagne (sorry Copper, just can't help myself) on the Sunday and used 5 tablets in all. I was fine and had very little problems after. I did have a slight bloating and windy disposition for a day or two, but no sickness, tiredness or diarrhoea.
Have since eaten a little bit of soft cheese and a kit kat, with no effects as of yet. Am really hoping that the problem is lactose, which it seems to be. Will definitely do a lot more testing in the future to make sure, but looks promising. Have a stomach bug at present, so will be bringing more in in a week or so.
For anyone who thinks they are dairy intolerant it is definitely worth a try. Please be careful though, especially if your symptoms are severe.
Hope all is well with you and all your families.
Kind Regards,
Lan. :D

I have found a good use for lactase tablets. Yesterday morning being somewhat brain dead (not coping with back to work early mornings) I put ordinary marg on my toast! This penetrated my brain after I had eaten it. A moment of panic as just that small amount of lactose would make me feel ill by the end of the day. I then remembered the said tablets in my cupboard. I took one with my coffee and I was OK. B)
cool, emergency tablets for when we have a no brainer moment!
i'm not going to believe you if you say you've had a pizza and icecream without thinking followed by a box of swiss chocs!

I have not left myself as senior member for nothing :D but even I wouldn't have such a senior moment and eat lots of dairy food.
