Is there such a thing as non-dairy creme freche?
I want to make my own milkshakes but apparantly I need this ingredient.
Any ideas?
why would you need creme fresh? you can use:
dairy free icecream,
coconut milk,
alpro dream,
any of the milk free milks, soya, almond, etc etc
the flavourings can then either be fresh fruit or pretty much any of the commercially made milk shake flavourings on the market just have a quick check of the ingredients.
experiment, whatever you make will be drinkable, just some might be nicer than others.
have fun
Try one of the plain dairy free yoghurts, eg Alpro (Provamel) Yofu or Sojasun cultered dessert. Both of these have the have the thick consistency you need and have a slight tang, though are nothing like as sharp as plain cow's milk yoghurt. I use them a lot with a sweet dessert such as fruit crumble. Alpro is quite widely available in supermarkets but you might have to order Sojasun from a health food shop (it has the nicer flavour/texture in my opinion).
Alpro - 500g - £1.19
Sojasun - 350g - 79p
These also make good dips, yoghurt sauce, can be added to sauces to make them creamier or mixed with fruit to make your own yoghurts. You can also use them as a starter to 'grow' more yoghurt - mix 2 tablespoons of starter with 1 pint of alternative milk, leave in a flask overnight, then decant into a suitable container and refridgerate.

OOh I like the idea of making a dip. How would I go about this?
I don't have any recipes, I just experiment.
Yoghurt always goes well with mint sauce for an indian type dip, or you could do a spicy dip by mixing with a little curry powder or chilli powder (or very finely chopped chillies). Maybe try it with a little tomato sauce mixed in, or some very finely chopped/grated onion. A dash of lemon juice to sharpen it and some chives (like sour cream and chives).
All very nice with plain pringles, tortilla chips (check the ingredients for milk) or chopped carrots, cucumber, celery etc. Or you could use a yoghurt dip/sauce as an accompaniment to salad instead of mayonnaise.
