I made an appointment to see my GP yesterday about a damaged thumb nail, so I thought that I would take the opportunity to hassle him about my lactose intolerance. When I got there I was told that I was down to see a locum as my GP was away!!!

The locum was a young lady and she said that she no experience with lactase tablets. She thought that I was probably doing the right things with my diet ie taking a calcium tablet. She did try to tell me that lactose intolerance was a transient thing but I did point out that if she looked at my records she would find that I was born with this problem. The records have been computerised but not that far back! I told her how ill I was as a child and that my brother has had this problem for at least 20 years. She then had to agree that most of the time it is a transient thing but perhaps not in my case.

I will get this put on my notes one day. Meanwhile I guess I am on my own with diet etc. Thank goodness we have this forum at least we all understand the problem and can help each other. I feel really sorry for the people on this list who have children/babies with this "illness" as they must feel desperate at times. My mother was always worried about me as I could be sick at the drop of a hat :) Lactose intolerance was not recognised in my day so even the London hospital couldn't find out what was wrong with me.

Copper- I too was at the docs recently and saw a locum- who was much more knowledgeable than my gp. She advised that lactase tablest are safe to use, so I now don't leave home without them. I have the Holland and Barratt variety as they seem to work best for me. After searching the web I see you can get the enzyme in droplet for- I may try this on my son. Has anyone tried the liquid version????

what's the phrase jack of all trades master of none? sums up most gp's. from my limited knowledge it's the allergy that you tend to grow out of not intolerance.

my doctor just thinks i'm nuts! as my problems didn't start till after i was assaulted badly. hence it must be stress causing it all. ho hum

"in your day" copper are you really feeling that old today? you're only as old as the person you feel. that makes me no age atall as poor little me on own.

i've not tried the tablets etc. in a way it's easier to not try. just stick to what i know. god this sounds depressing even to me. i'll go and feel down on my own time!!

Hi Matt,

You seem to have the same saying as me 'You're only as old as the person your feeling.' Unfortunately for me Steve is 4 years older.

I know what you mean about allergies/intolerances starting after stress. I have had so much stress in my life such as bullying and a sense of feeling unworthy. When my grandfather died after 7 painful months of cancer I began to drink loads and my body finally cracked. I wouldn't change it though as I feel this experience has made me a much better and stronger person

That's why I love this website as I just feel I am doing something good. It is also great to have so many friends to speak to, who understand what it is like.

I have to say that at present I am lucky to have a doctor who is very understanding. The last time I asked him to see a dietician he referred me straight away, no questions asked. I wish all of them could be more like him. He's great.

After trying to bring in milk the last time I have given up. I just feel it is not worth going through all that suffering for just one food. I guess I am just reserved to the fact now.

Kind Regards Lonley One.

cheers for the reply!

my doctor's weird. he insists it's stress being the cause but then happily lets me see dietician or send blood samples off whenever i say could it be such and such. go figure either he's got a huge budget or he's just very nice (and is just humouring me whilst not believing a word i'm saying)

i'm not going to bother re-introducing milk. nearly every dietician i've seen has said that milk isn't that good for you. so what's the point taking the risk of reactions when the altenatives are so much better for you. the longer the time without the easier it gets to avoid. it's wheat thats hard to eliminate.

for everyone else out there not taking part in this discussion. don't give up with doctors. you just need to be firm and not get fobbed off as a crank. change doctors if needed you will get someone sympathetic eventually.

have a good weekend everyone
