Hi all, just had my daughter (18 months) checked out at the hospital for her allergy to eggs. They put some raw egg on her top lip and sat and waited for a reaction. My wife and I were waiting for her head to swell up like when we fed it to her 6 months earlier. Nothing really happened - just a little redness. After around a hour and a half they were reluctant to give her any to eat and said we were free to go. A quick talk with the dietician who said to continue not to feed her eggs and we were sent on our way. We were a little disapointed as we thought we would find out a little more about what she could and couldn't eat. So we went for lunch. I went up to order lunch and once I had paid I looked over to my wife who was signalling me over. I got the food and went over and Grace's face was begining to swell and her eyes were itching. We quickly grabbed the food and legged it back to the car and back to the hospital. On arrival we were given Piritin to give her and the swelling went down. After 2 hours we were free to go.

We were no longer disapointed that they didn't give her the egg to eat as we learnt that she was still allergic to eggs it just took longer to react this time. We now have the joys of avoiding egg for a further 2 years before she will be checked again. We're just about getting a routine when we are out for what we can order - usually chicken or sausages so Grace can get some. At home it's okay as we scrutinise the ingredients before buying anything. I suppose it could be worse - some of the kids in hospital were a lot worse off.

Any similar experiences/tips welcome!

Cheers

Hi Richie,

Sorry to hear that Grace is so unwell. I have no experience with egg allergy as I am only intolerant to milk and am able to eat egg. Also my symptoms came on in adulthood so am unable to give any information on childhood allergies.

I have added a link below which lists all the names given to egg deriratives, which I think maybe useful. I have also added the website address of AllergyUK who produce many requestable factsheets and maybe able to give you some more information.

Good luck.

I am allergic to eggs. I have always felt unwell for as long as I can remember. When I was 15 I discovered that I was allergic to eggs. I don't have the severe reaction that Grace does - I just get the feeling sick and rushing to the loo reaction. Oddly I can eat eggs if they are in cakes etc. Somebody did suggest that I should try an egg yolk as I might only be allergic to the egg white. Egg white is the protein part of the egg. I just can't bring myself to try.

You should also be aware that the flu vaccine used to be grown on an egg medium. I remember years ago reading a notice which said if you were allergic to eggs that you could not have the injection. I mention this in case other vaccines are grown on egg medium.

My mother and I were talking about my childhood the other day and think that I was born with lactose intolerance and egg allergy. As I have got older I have developed a few more allergies :(

Thanks Copper

The MMR jab is also cultured on egg - something I found out when surfing the net on egg allaergies. Grace had hers in hospital under the watchfull eyen of the peaditrician - and luckily nothing happened. Apperently the egg traces are all removed and the chance of a reaction is very very low. As we live an hours drive away from the hospital we thought getting it done at the local GP was too risky. I'll keep everyone up to date with any other egg allergy news.

Cheers
