View Full Version : Crisps - beware

Just a warning to be careful with crisps:rant: .

I discovered (to my horror) that some salt and vinegar flavoured crisps have lactose in them - not a product I would have bothered to check!

But it gets worse! Some packets of Walkers S&V are listed with lactose in, and some don't; I can't remember, but I think the multipack variety were the guilty party.

Going back to food science 101, I think the problem is that the manufacturers are using lactose to get the flavouring to stick to the crisp.

Comments/experiences anyone?

Many crisps have lactose in them. Whey and Casein are another two that you need to watch out for.

With the Walkers crips i think most flavour have lactose in them but there are some without it.

Check out this article here (http://www.dairyfreeuk.com/forum/article.php?a=2) for a list of ingredients milk is listed as.

Most flavoured crisps have lactose in them - especially Pringles. Ready Salted and Salt and Vinegar seem to be the ones without lactose in general - but have a look at the package before purchase as always.

I am not particularly fussed on crisps :D but when I do eat them, my favourites are:

Salt & Vinegar Hula Hoops
Plain Hula Hoops
Walkers Salt & Vinegar
Walkers Plain
Walkers Prawn Cocktail
Walkers Worcester Sauce Flavour
BBQ Spare Rib Sensations

**Incase of mistakes, please always read labels carefully before eating**

Tescos and Sainsburys also do a range of dairy free crisps. See below:

The Sainsbury's crisps come in a bag of 6 (2 Cheese & Onion, 2 Salt & Vinegar and 2 Prawn Cocktail) and are wheat, gluten and dairy free. For the money they are great value and the cheese and onion are to die for.

The tescos crisps are in a bag of 9-12 (I think) and the same flavours as above. Have not tried them yet so would be happy to hear people's views on taste and value etcetera. Don't think my local actually sells them anymore, but have definitely seen them there.

As you can tell I really don't like crisps!!!

Kind Regards,

Lan.

Hi all,

I would like to comment that the BBQ Spare Rib Sensations have flavourings, so please be careful. Have checked tonight (and eaten a packet) but I only have an intolerance.

Take care all.

Kind Regards,

Lan.

P.S. My real name is Leanne as per Steve. He feels it would be friendlier to put my real name. What do you think? :D

The last crisps that I had were some variety of Doritos, they definetly had some sort of milk product in as they made me ill, I only tried them to see if the level would react. They did so, now I know that I can not tolerate even small amounts.

Lan/Leanne - I would say that the majority of people on here do not use their proper name, I suppose it is nice to know but should be up to the individual if they want to reveal it. Matt nearly always refers to his daughter as madam, instead of Caitlin, I don't know whether this is to project her identiy or whether she is a madam, but it is quite obvious that he loves to spend time with her.

I love crisps and the one flavour I really miss being on a dairy free diet is Cheese and onion crisps.

I now tend to stick to plain crisps or go for salt and vinegar but only with supermarket top ranges like somerfield so good and tesco extra special as they tend to have less ingredients and addictives in them. Not keen on meaty flavours.

I think the plain corn Doritos are okay and great for dipping into some salsa or hommous.

Hi Lan.
I dont mean to sound like you dont know what you are talking about but....

Are you the sure that sainsburys cheese and onion crisp are dairy free?

Seems impossible to me.
I know a lot depends on allergies and being intollerant.

Bella I do believe that Sainsburys do do a range of crisps that are dairy and gluten free, not sure of the flavours though.

Bella - the Sainsburys Cheese & Onion Crisps that Lan was describing come in a variety pack of 6 bags of Dairy Free Crisps. I haven't shopped at Sainsburys for a very long time so I don't know how widely available they are. I have eaten them in the past though, they used to be found in the Free From section.

this thread was a long time asleep!!! lan's comments were back in 2004!!!

the crisps were , if i remember rightly the sainsburys dairy free ones which i have no idea if they still do. worth going to their larger stores to find out. who knows with them!

i am happy to use my own name here, madam is just a pseudonym for my daughter, she rarely if ever deserves it. :lol2: i never let her loose on the computer solo so not too worried about her id being compromised but never hurts to be carefull.

i tend to stick with the plain crisps,,, walkers or store own. some times as a treat i go for seabrooks thick ready salted from either morrisons or waitrose. very nice and thick.

These used to be OK, so I was in the pub in Devon (where they're made) happily munching through some rather tasty lobster flavoured Burts crisps, and then checked the back just in case. All the flavours now have lactose! This is very irritating, as they taste gorgeous and are made in about as healthy a way as you can make crisps (everything is relative!). I had to give the rest of the pack to my husband, who didn't object, but I'm cross!

Just thought I'd let people know.

Nic

Sainsburys do do an own brand one called cheddar and spring onion, which haven't seen any real cheese, just chemicals :)

which is why i stick to salted. the thought of something tasting of flavour X when there is no X in it worries me....:o

I wish there were more like that because I really like cheese and onion crisps.
