Hi Danna,

My name is Lan and I am the owner of this website. Due to the fact that I have no medical knowledge only daily living of dairy-free, I am unable to issue any medical advise.

However, I have read that a child under 12 months, should not be given soya milk. I know that these are worrying times and my best advice, would be to contact your doctor, who will be able to refer you to a state registered dietician. I saw a dietician when I cut out dairy and had to eat other foods and use supplements. This I suspect would be the case with your baby.

Godd luck, and if I can be of any assistance on day to day living, please do not hesitate to leave a message on the forum, or contact me direct by e-mail.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Lan

Hi Danna

My daughter has been milk free from 3 months. She was prescribed soya formula by the doctor when she cried non stop as a baby. I gradually weaned her onto a normal milk diet but found that she was having problems with poor weight gain, disturbed sleep, constipation and spells of hysterical crying. After discussions with the doctor we returned to a milk free diet and were referred to a paediatric dietician. She is a bit of a faddy eater so needs to continue with the soya formula until she is 5 (free on prescription). Supermarket soya milk isn't really adequate for babies so you should ask your doctor to recommend/prescribe an alternative.

Soya seems to have been getting a bad press recently so your doctor may prescribe a hypo-allergenic formula instead. With regard to the additional sugar, just ensure that you keep up with teeth brushing and maybe discuss it with the dentist next time you visit.

Hi Pam,

Thank for the helpful information. I have only had intolerances/allergies since I was 19, so was unsure on this topic.

Kind Regards,

Hi there,

My son wasn't put on soy based milk but on Nutramigen which is a hypo allergenic milk, and we had to see a dietician for the first year of Jo's life. However we were never really told what was the matter with him as we live in Holland and communication was not at it's best. He started milk after the age of one but now aged four we think he might have had a milk allergy all along as he suffers chronic constipation and eczema if he has too much milk. (we have only just realised that constipation can be a symptom as we thought it was diaharrea only). So good luck with your son and make sure they explain thing to you

unfortunately soya baby milk is based on glucose as the dominant ingredient, i was horrified when i realised this. I breast fed until he was 11mts old so it wasn't too bad. The only advise i have is to make your you clean his teeth twice daily, Don't let him suckle the bottle for too long when feeding, and i know how difficult that is. Although it is recommended now to use baby milk until two years of age, i introduced the provamel unsweetend milk with added vits and calcium and used the powdered for breakfast milk prior to cleaning my babies teeth. The doctor agrred that he was really healthy, no problems eating, so now since about 13mths, he's been on the normal milk as opposed to baby soya milk.
