Hi I'm Kirsty and I'm new on the list. My 11 month old son is considered milk intolerant so I'm really joining on his behalf. We first discovered he had a problem when he developed colic at 6 weeks, by 8 weeks he had blood in his stools and we were then referred to a paediatrician at our local hospital. I was told to cut dairy and wheat out of my diet as I was breastfeeding and it was an instant success. We were told to treat him as an allergic child, although no allergy tests have been done and keep him off dairy, eggs etc until he was a year old. Well judging by the rash he came out with twice in December when he got hold of big brothers chocolate and a biscuit with milk in it, I guess it is a little more than just intolerance.
Looking to forward to meeting everyone
Kirsty
Hi Kirsty, welcome to the site. I'm here originally due to my daughter's milk intolerance but have since decided that I also have a sensitivity to milk so I avoid it too now (except I have been very naughty over the last week and am now paying for it).
There's generally someone who knows the answers to your questions, so just ask away.
I'm new also! my son also had the blood in his stool, I am also breeastfeeding and I have also cut dairy out of my diet on the advice of the paediatrician! I re introduced some dairy back into my diet when my son reached 6mnths old (on their advice) but unfortunately he developed tummy pains and we ended up in the Childrens Ward over the Christmas Hols. I have now cut all dairy back out of my diet and we are waiting for an appointment from the hospital so we can be referred to a Gastroentologist?? (I think thats how you spell it!) Since cutting out the dairy for a second time, he is back to his normal happy self. I am just wondering really, how he will get enough calcium once he stops breast feeding? does anyone have any thoughts ideas on this?? I am worried about the soya milks/ products re the infertility issue thats been in the news lately. I get my calcium at the moment from Tropicana Calcium Orange Juice.
calcium is added to loads of stuff. hopefully it won't be long before you get to see gastro when they can prescribe the necessary baby food etc and calcium needs.
don't panic and keep the pressure on the doctor for the appointment. then hopefully you'll be in a more secure stable position with your sons needs covered. ask away here for any advice, or just for a chat if you want to pass the time, gossip. there'll always be someone willing to comment on wahtever you say.
I am so glad I found this site, I don't actually have a problem with dairy myself although I am following a dairy free diet at the moment to keep my milk "dairy free"fpr my baby. I have really had my eyes opened I must say, not ever having had an allergy myself, when I first started to cut the dairy out I could not believe the amount of foodstuffs that contained milk, the only thing I really really miss is chocolate, the plamil stuff just isnt the same....anyone got any nice chocolate recipes under their belt?

I agree Plamil just isn't nice at all. We have to eat plain chocolate but not Bourneville as that contains butter fat. We have all been eating After Eights this holiday :) Most of the chocolate peppermint creams are ok you just have to check the ingredients on the box. I eat Tesco own and they are ok. Green and Black do bars of chocolate that we can eat - I can recommend the peppermint :) Pam likes the Mayan? Gold which has orange in it I think.
Sainsburys do a couple of chocolate bars Free from dairy. I don't shop in Sainsburys as they have always been running down their Dairy Free ranges when I have been in the past.
atleast you can eat choc. i'm stuck with plamil carob bars, it's slightly worrying when you start to actually enjoy them!
had tofutti soft cheese for the first time yesterday, won't be the last it's lovely. why haven't i tried it before.....better than phillidelphia no kidding.
the local health food shop should have two cheeses in for me scheese edam and cheshire, just for a change.
how long will the tofutti keep now it's opened? obviously in fridge. i was annoyed when sainsbury's stopped theirs but this is nicer.
not everyones taste but last night ate a whole box of Bendicks Chocolate Ginger....dairy free and gorgeous! Thanks for the dark chocolate tips, I hadn't even thought about dark choclate, daft gal that I am.
Yes I like Green & Black Maya Gold or their plain dark chocolate. Tesco do their own free from "milk" chocolate which is ok if you don't like dark and lots of places now sell a dairy free chocolate (made by same people as do the Sainsburys one) it is available in crispy or tangerine varieties but I've not managed to find a tangerine one yet.
The Plamil bars aren't really up to proper chocolate standard but the orange and mint ones are just about bearable. My all time favourites are Booja Booja truffles but they are rather expensive so they are just for really special occasions.
After Eights and Elizabeth Shaw mint/orange chocolates are the more easily accessible ones.
Edit: forgot to say - Some after eights produced in other countries contain butterfat so are a no-no. Always check the ingredients.

Hi there, I bought a Kinnerton dairy free Easter egg in Waitrose. It was £1.99 and they had Groovy Chick(Bang on The Door) or Simpson ones. Make sure you get the ones marked dairy free on the box. Good luck! I think that larger Sainsburys may do them too.:)
