Hi im stacey am 25 and lactose intolerant, was diagnosed as a child but had only occasional minor stomach cramps, until i was 16 when it got worse stayed off dairy for a year and weaned myself back on until recently when ate to much and had severe stomach pains due to constipation!
Can tollerate butter and milk with tea and coffee but cheese & yoghurt are no no's and my favourites:( . Not sure about cream and ice cream can handle small infrequent amounts.
Anyone know if you can get nice tasting lactose free cheese!
if you can tolerate some milk you could try goats cheese.
if not then forget the comparison and as you'll see from the other threads there are several types of free from cheese.
scheese
cheesly
tofutti
all have several flavours. they are different to cheese and different people like different ones. they only way is to try them and see what you think.
all available from health food shops.
for further info check out the other threads.
Hi Stasia, welcome to the site.
Your symptoms are very much like the ones my daughter suffers but I believe the protein in cow's milk to be her problem rather than lactose.
Unfortunately dairy free cheese is not good, I've given up buying it now and just use the occasional slice of Tofutti for pizzas and lasagne (these are individually wrapped slices in packs of 10 that last for ages in the fridge).
For ice cream I can recommend Swedish Glace which is available from most supermarkets, it comes in a black hexagonal tub and is about £1.65 for 750ml. My milk eating husband actually prefers it to dairy ice cream. Sainsburys do some nice but expensive free from ice cream and Tofutti do a few flavours too (but harder to find).
If you are sure that lactose is your problem rather than protein you could try taking lactase tablets. These are an enzyme which helps to digest lactose and allows you to eat normal foods. A couple of members here have tried them and if you do a search for lactase you should pick something up.
Once again, welcome to the site and if you have any questions, just ask.

Welcome Stasia
I am one of the lactose intolerant members. I have tried some of the dairy free cheeses and prefer scheese which is in my local health food shop. I have also tried the lactase capsules which I found in the health food shop. I don't try and push my luck too far, so I have not used the capsules in order to have a dairy binge :) My tolerance to lactose has changed a lot recently and I can't tolerate much - even using Flora marg on a roll contains enough lactose to tip me over the edge. I keep the lactase tablets in my cupboard ready for when I have a senior moment and put too much lactose reduced milk in my coffee or use the wrong marg.
Hi there.
My favourite cheese is Cheesley and they now produce a range of flavours and melting dairyfree cheeses. Very nice.
I also eat Parmazano which is the equivalent to grated cheese. Tastes a little bit salty but not too bad.
Have you got a local Holland and Barrett? The one near us is great and will order things in. You could also try Sainsburys and Tescos who produce their own brands.
KInd Regards,
Lan. :D
