View Full Version : Thick question time.... Baileys? (and booze in general)

Bailey's Irish Cream according to the label is made from "fresh irish cream". Does this mean cow's milk cream??????

I wonder if the alcohol kills off the nasty allergy bits? I'm not a huge fan but have a bottle sat in the cupboard that I was given and don't know whether I should give it away.

Also..... Advocaat??? Does that have milk/cream in it?

If I can't have those I'll have to work my way through the amaretto, malibu, gin, vodka etc etc.

I had a bar of G & B plain chocolate the other night that didn't taste right - far more bitter than usual, almost burnt tasting (should have saved some and sent it back for vouchers or whatever) and together with a single glass of wine I was left feeling nauseous for the next 24 hours. The wine went straight to my head which is unusual for one glass and I felt really ill.

Looks like they are both out then!

yes addvocaat def got dairy. i think it's butter. i thought about some at xmas as i used to love them. very camp i know but in my book if it taste nice who cares?

baileys is going to be a no no aswell as is anything like it.

you could always make your own cocktails using soyadream? should work? do you want to risk good alcohol though? vodka and red grape juice used to be a favourite.

sounds like you had a dodgy bar of choc. could still send off the wrapper to tell them. as long as you can show you've bought some might get a reply.

The wrapper went in the bin as soon as I had devoured the last little bit. I thought it was my taste buds deceiving me until I tried some from another bar the next day and realised that the first one was definitely not right. Maybe I should buy some more from that shop and see if it is from the same batch, then I can send it back and get substantial vouchers from G&B.

I thought that advocaat was made from egg yolk and whatever spirit but I'd never thought about anything else before - doh!!!!

Some brands of wine seem to have a bad effect on me these days and give me headache after only one glass, this was particularly noticable with the cheap wine kits - too many chemicals I think.

cheap wine can do that. organic wine is touted as being non hangover but i don't think it'll be worth the extra cost. could be a dodgy batch of wine. still write to the choccy company. only 28p for a stamp you might get lucky.

is it red or white wine? i really like some of the rose around. white grenache or zinfadel. look a bit sissy but they taste lovely.

i've a nice bottle of damson gin on the go at the moment. bit like sloe gin, another favourite. not that i drink much of it.

a nice pint of real ale used to go down a treat. no dairy in that. but got to be quality stuff.
or a good pint of guiness. ice cold. need i say more?

not had either for about four years due to migraines etc:rant:

I drank a full bottle of advocaat over Christmas and had no bad effects, so you may be ok. I also thought it was just egg yolks and the alcohol. Baileys is definitly out though.

Maybe advocaat is ok afterall then. I'm into cinzano and lemonade at the moment (how dated is that?) It's cheaper than a bottle of wine and lasts longer. I must have looked like a wino yesterday though because I forgot to take a bag to Lidl with me and just happened to see the cinzano whilst I was there so I had it stuck out of my coat pocket. I think my weekly alcohol intake averages at about 2 units so I'm not that bad. It increases considerably when the children decide to play up though!

A woman after my own heart!! Cinzano is my favourite tipple, although I find it hard to get when on a night out, I always end up opting for the martini as no one seems to understand the word "cinzano" look at you like you just ordered chicken soup or something.

feel free to try advocaat but i contacted the firm that makes the stuff before christmas and they said not dairy free.

it may well be like some other stuff where the contents have been cooked or something to change their components. give it a go and see.

Argh! This is so unfair - until I have an all-clear on alcohol I can't drink, and now you've got me craving a pint of real ale! Oh the pain. Oh the angst.

Am I the world's only currently-teetotal, card-carrying CAMRA member...?

I shall stop ranting now. Sorry. <g> Everyone have a drink for me. I'll sit here with this elderflower cordial. No, really. ;)

My nearest fake to Baileys (which I used to love) is kahlua and So Good (or any other vanilla-y soya milk should work). But I'm more of a beer girl now... though I'm not sure that Belgian beer is a taste I should really acquire, given the huge alcohol and calorie content.:)

Kamagrian, if its any comfort, I don't drink much anymore- Getting up at 5.30 and drinking the night before was just not going to work, so the drink went! I've had a bottle of vodka in my room since last December, and I think theres been the equivalent of one drink gone from it!!

I've never liked beer- went to a brewery once and ate hops (I think thats what may have put me off)

Aww, thanks people - I'm not really feeling sorry for myself, and I recognise that some of you are far worse off than me in terms of restrictions and so on.

There's a wonderful singer-songwriter night here in Edinburgh which Matt (bf) and I often go to, and my normal order for the evening was a couple of pints of good real ale - they do a selection at this place, so if any of you are ever visiting the city, I can highly recommend it! I'm going to miss those treat drinks, as well as the lovely cheese, ham and tomato toasties they serve.

I really feel for you, matt - not being able to tolerate gluten must make things very difficult. I have a vegan friend who has the same problem, and I'm really impressed with the way she's researched things so that she still maintains her weight and good health without dairy, meat, eggs, fish or gluten grains. It's an awful lot of work though, so respect to you for that.

Claire - yeah, chewing raw hops would probably do that to you. They also have a sedative effect (they're used medicinally in insomnia cures) so I'm surprised you weren't wandering around like a zombie for the rest of the day. ;-)

Anyway...more lie-down time for me.

Nah, I'm too hyperactive to let a mild sedative do much to me!!

Just treat yourself to something from Lush or somewhere with the money you would normally have spent on the ale :)

Ellsie, some of us are still 'impressionable' teenagers, I hope you realise what a bad example you are setting us :D:naughty:

Think you'll need more than 5 glasses of wine to drink to each member individually!
No drinking and swimming though (you'll end up going round in circles!):lol2:

Hi all.

If you think hops are bad, try eating raw yeast. I had to eat it on my first elimination diet and nearly vomited each time. It is the worst thing I have ever tasted.

Gill, what part of Edinburgh are you from? I have step-family in Innerleithen. I hope I spelt that correctly.

I found this info on Advocaat: http://www.historymania.com/american_history/Advocaat. I can't drink it either as it has sugar and vanilla in it. No mention of anything dairy though.

As far as I remember Advocaat is quite easy to make yourself. Mum used to make it, and I'm trying to remember whether she but butter in it, I don't think she did, but will check with her later and let you know. I may even be able to find the recipe for those that are interested...

I didn't think I missed having alcohol, then I read this!!

I could murder a bowl of ice-cream with baileys dribbled over the top.
I was never a huge binge drinker but I know it makes me really ill so I don't touch a drop these days.
The York Test woman said the only thing she could say to try would be a small vodka and orange, but I was sure vodka came from a grain of some sort, so I haven't had any.

Vodka can be made from grain and/or potatoes, but it seems it is mainly from grain these days.

http://www.peconika.com/peconika-vodka-news.htm says, "Peconika is the first vodka from New York State, and is the only blended vodka of both potatoes (famous Long Island Potatoes) and select grain, which gives it exceptional character and smoothness."

http://txtx.essortment.com/vodkadrinks_rbov.htm says, "Although vodka began as rye-based liquor, as it became more popular to the masses, the potato became the ingredient of choice. The potato was much more common, and although the vodka did not taste as well, much easier to distill from than other grains. As vodka made the switch from a family made liquor to one that was produced on a grand scale by large distilleries, the potato was discarded and grain was embraced. Today most brands of vodka are distilled from rye, wheat, barley, and most commonly corn."

you could always try good quality rum. made from cane sugar. beware cheap spirits as often made from grain based alcohol then flavours added.
