View Full Version : Hi
Hi, I've been visiting the site for a little while and thought I should join.
I'm currently on a dairy free diet, mainly for health reasons related to sport.
Was suggested to me to try a dairy free diet by an a friend who works in Chinese health treatments, as I'm an asthmatic
Haven't really got much to say just thought I should say Hi instead of just hiding as a guest

Hello, glad you came and welcome to the site.Has being dairy free helped?
What sports are you involved in?
I'm a rower for my college at university, and I'm also a diver. Dairy free combined with more medication has improved things greatly, means I'm not sick after a race or very hard training!!
Hi CNC and welcome to the site. Your activities sound far too energetic for me but I'm glad that your dairy free diet is helping. I'd like to know more about the chinese medicine - why you went there and what else they did/said. (I'm very nosy and if you don't ask you don't find out).

Hi cnc and welcome. My asthma has been dormant for a few years now but I am sure if I did any sport it would be back.
I ended up having accupuncture after I fell snowboarding:(
I happen to know about the clinic as one of my closest friends Dad owns it, and it came up in a general discussion, about food sensitivities and links with dairy and asthma. Haven't been tested for anything as yet, but they do some form of testing which I may get myself booked in for it at some point soon and see what the results are. I think its called a Vegatest but I'm not sure.
My hubby had accupuncture for his migraines, it worked really well. I've heard mixed reactions to vega testing, is that the one where they measure the electric response from your fingertips to different foods?
Where are you in West Yorkshire? I'm near Huddersfield and we have another member who is at Huddersfield Uni - we must be the dairy free hot spot of the universe.
I've no idea what they do, if I ever get round to it Ill let you know how it goes.
I was really impressed with the accupuncture as well.
I'm not too far from Huddersfield, I live in the southern part of Leeds. I only live here during the holidays though.
Trying to find dairy free in two different cities is proving quite interesting, as I don't know many places near my university as I've not been there long and I as I'm a bit new to this I don't know any where useful locally either.
There are a few jewish areas in Leeds but I think they are more to the north. If you can get to one of the jewish shops you should be ok as their parve food is dairy free. I don't know about other shops near Leeds but the Sainsburys store at the white rose centre is quite a big one and generally has a reasonable selection of dairy free stuff. I do most of my dairy free shopping in Huddersfield or Cleckheaton and occasionally pick stuff up in Holland and Barrett in Dewsbury.
Thanks, I do a lot of my shopping in the Sainsburys in White Rose as it's only about 5 minutes away from me.
I also use the Tesco in Batley, as I found that was the only place I could get any suitable cheese.
Cleckheaton/Dewsbury/ Heckmondwike area isn't too far from me about a 15 minute drive, so I would be grateful for any information as that's probably more accessible to me.
Sorry that I only seem to be asking for information, I just don't have much of an idea at the moment.
Ask away, we've being doing this a bit longer than you so have picked up plenty of information.
Nowhere really in Heckmondwike or Dewsbury but in Cleckheaton there is the Green Health Food shop which is on the main shopping street that runs parallel with the main road, the lady in there is very helpful, stock levels vary but she will order things in for you and she also stocks different flavours of ice cream to most other places. What cheese did you get in Batley Tesco? I've never seen any dairy free cheese there and go about once a month for their free from chocolate.
On the subject of cheese, I don't like any of the dairy free cheeses but use Tofutti slices to top pizza and lasagne as they are the only ones that actually melt.
I get the Cheezly chedder from there, its with all the normal cheeses, am getting used to it, although I can't eat it on its own.
Where do you get the Tofutti slices from?
Another question sorry, does anyone know where I can get dairy free foods in central Cambridge?especially ice cream!!
quick someone save this poor individual.....cheezly!!! find a health food shop and try scheese or tofutti soft/slices. mind you if you like it then at the same place you can get several different types of cheezly. they do about 5 or so types.
your welcome to the site. the more the merrier, ask away with the questions normally someone has an answer.
can't help with cambridge, but again find a health food shop. they either have the things in stock or will normally order things in quickly. mine'll have stuff in on friday that i order on tuesday.
i thought students were meant to be poor? how do you afford all these sports? and shouldn't you be studying not playing:lol2: just kidding. been there done that, can't remember much due to the alcohol poisoning but must have enjoyed some of it i suppose.
I usually get my Tofutti slices from the Green Health Shop in Cleckheaton (they have another brand sometimes too but they aren't as good and don't get the rice slices as they have milk in). I managed to pick up some Tofutti slices in H&B a few weeks ago but they don't often have them in.
So you row for your college at Cambridge University? You're not in 'the' boat race team are you? (Sorry, all these questions, like I said I'm very nosy.)
I quite like the cheezly, I've tasted much worse normal cheeses and I couldn't find anything else and was getting rather desperate for cheese!!
Students are poor:( But rowings free and doesn't affect my work to much as I try and avoid studying at 5AM!
I would love to be in the womens university team, but as I only took up rowing in October it wasn't going to happen this year, but am considering trying for it next year. 'The' Boat race is only for men so there's no chance of me being there I'm afraid :D
I may go on a visit to the Green Health shop and see what I can get before I go back to Cambridge, at least then I won't starve when I arrive

SCHEESE? I'd rather gnaw my own food off than eat that stuff! :bleh:
Now give me a nice block of the melting mozzeralla cheezly any day
Just goes to show that we are all different, and if they only made one kind half (or more) of us would be very unhappy

Do you mean finger????
Sorry CNC I thought you were male for some reason. OOoops! Green Health sell cheezly too.
It's ok, I've had worse insults!!I suppose my username doesn't give clues to gender.
I'm going to drag my Mum to the Health shop one day, the joys of being a student, free food!!
I seen that Matt and there is nothing wrong with Cheezley. It comes in many flavours and is available from Tescos. You can also get a melting variety which is very nice.
My advice is try different cheeses and see which one you like. My favourite is CHEEZLY.:drool::drool::drool::drool:
Kind Regards,
Lan. :D
the only other thing you need to watch is that cheesly has yeast extracts in. obviously only a prob if they are a problem to you. i try to aviod them.
but the best way is to try some and see which you prefer. my fav are scheese (edam, mozerelo, and cheshire) not too keen on the cheddar as is very distinct strong taste. those ones have gentler more subtle tastes.

Whoops, typo! I actually meant FOOT rather than FOOD ;)
I'm afraid my attitude towards suitable cheeses, was I got so desperate for cheese, I ate the first dairy-free one I came across, and that was hard enough, which is possibly why I quite like Cheezly as it was my saviour!!(I was addicted to cheese, prior to my change to dairy-free, and was finding it harder to live without than cadburys dairy milk, which was another favourite of mine!)
