Can anyone throw any light on this ingredient?
'vegetarian whey powder'
It was on a can of soup I had yesterday. Why call it that??? It's like vegetarian sausages and burgers, surely a true vegetarian doesn't want to eat products that look like meat!!!

I wonder if they sometimes put animal fat in whey powder? Then maybe this version doesn't have it. Or perhaps they put rennet in the milk to separate the curds and whey in a similar process to cheese making. I think genuine rennet comes from a cow's stomach doesn't it? I don't know if there is a vegan/vegetarian alternative to rennet.

My understanding of a vegetarian diet is that they won't eat anything that has been killed but taking the milk doesn't necessitate killing the animal so that is ok. Vegans won't eat anything that has come from a living thing - dead or alive.

Either way, vegetarian whey powder is still not safe for dairy free people - now if you found a vegan one... that would be a different story.

It's a good job I don't have to ba dairy free then!! Why does product labelling have to be so damn complicated!!!

I've been a veggie for 20 years and sometimes it is nice to eat something that isn't completely different from everyone else. When we have nice comfort food like bangers and mash my husband has the real thing and I have the Cauldron lincolnshire sausages. Basically the same meal.
I'm sure if when they were uncooked they looked as awful as raw sausages do, all processed muck, I wouldn't be so keen ;)

i think you can get a vegan rennet but don't quote me on that.

life would be too easy if they just called everything by the simple name and labelled stuff properly. where would the fun be?
