View Full Version : Snacks
Just wondered if anyone knew of some dairy free snacks that are fairly easy to buy, as I've got to go on a field trip on Wednesday, so need some highish energy foods that will travel well (have previously relied on kitkats etc...).
I think I'll probably end up taking biscuits with me, but wondered if anyone had some other suggestions?
Most health food shops sell dairy free flapjack. You could get some of those mini boxes of breakfast cereal and eat them dry. Jordans and Asda do dairy free breakfast bars. I believe Tesco do some too. Nuts are always good (unless you have an allergy there too). Ritz biscuits (red box) were dairy free last time I looked. Ready salted Pringles (once you pop you just can't stop). Sunflower and pumpkin seeds are good for energy too. Lots of supermarkets sell ring pull cans of fruit or Dole do some in plastic tubs with pull tops (but might be a bit risky taking those). Raisins or other dried fruit.
Anything tickle your fancy?
Pringles are my staple diet of crisps at the moment, the selection of crisps in the shops round here is not brilliant!
I may well try a few of the health food shops around here, will give me an excuse to get out of my room.
Good suggestions, thanks Pam, its quite hard thinking of what I can go buy not really knowing what they sell much around here.
i think pam covered most. if your tesco's has a large freefrom selection they'll be lots of choice. they do choc and nut bars, cinnamon and apricot bars, muffins, jam tarts, apple pies, and so on.
jelly pots from most supermarkets.
loads of stuff really depends what you fancy. i'd do the supermarket wander before the health food shop. prob cheaper and let's be honest snack food ain't healthy! :lol2:
Unfortunatly here within quick accessability is a Sainsburys and a Marks and Spencers, its not that useful, I don't really have the time to go out to either of the Tescos, but I'm sure I'll find something.
oh well plain crisps and plain choc it is then!!! life's a bitch:lol2:
I don't need to get any fatter!!Pringles by the way do a smoky bacon flavour which is suitable for vegans,- I've got a box of them here, but I'm a bit scared to try them!!
Think I'll might end up resorting to the fizzy orange lucozade, makes me hyper if I drink enough of the stuff, so should provide me with plenty of energy!
9-6 field trip, 6.15 until i think about 8 is rowing! Will be needing a lot of energy
Hypocrite!! I think most of my post warrants being called a nutter, but I'm intrigued into which part you thought was worthy of nutter status!!
I'm quite weird, I thought I'd said that before, as well as saying they are coming to take me away!
What about crackers? Jacobs Mediterraneo Italian Crackers are really nice?
Crackers are indeed good- Cream crackers are fine!!
I'm not sure if this has been covered before, sorry if it has, but during a trip to Boots, I came across their free from range. It's mostly snack foods, I bought chocolate cake bars (contain eggs and soya), cherry and coconut bars (contain sulphur dioxide!!) and fruit, nut and chocolate bars (contains nuts), but all three packs are gulten, wheat and dairy free. There was also chocolate muffins, blueberry bars, ginger slices and a couple of other things I think. So the range is reasonable and about £2 for 5 cereal bars, so not that unreasonable. I'll let you know what they taste like (I only bought 3 boxes because they were on 3 for 2!!, I'm not *that* greedy) :eat:
hey i'm not hypocrite. i'm madder than a mad thing, takes one to know one.
i think it was the out at 6:15 to go rowing that tipped the balance.....believe me if i had the choice i'd not be up now.....6:15 is only to be seen from the nighttime side cause you've had a good night. no one should have to be awake that early.:lol2:
bars sound nice can't wait for the review.
have a good field trip, hug a tree for me!!
Sorry wrong 6.15, it is in fact a 9-6 field trip and then a couple of hours on the river, 18:15-21:00 apparently, which is quite harsh!! and means I've got to carry rowing kit with me to the woods.
I'll see if I can hug a tree, I think we're meant to be counting them?! though!
were any missing????:lol2:
Nope they were all accounted for :P
I managed to hug several trees, have even got the tree slime on my coat to prove it!!
All the bars were good, the chocolate sponge bar thing was probably the best, someone even commented on how nice it looked! I however when hungry enough will eat most things, the cherry and coconut looked a bit dry but wasnt that bad, overall I think they were quite nice.
Whereabouts in Boots do you find their free from stuff? Is it with the sandwiches or elsewhere? Dewsbury Boots have very little food but I occasionally get to Huddersfield, Wakefield or the Birstall one at Junction 27.
The one I was in it was towards the foods, was with lo-carb stuff, and maybe slim fast. I just happened to come by it accidently, so I dont know. I can imagine the stock only being held in the bigger stores. The one I was in is probably about the size of Birstall, or a bit bigger, so the central Leeds one might be worth a try if you happen to be there.
I couldn't find the items online, which was a bit annoying.
good to hear the snacks were nice and that all the trees were present!!!:lol2:
Yet more snacks to be consumed today!:) Race day means chocolate afterwards :D It's one of the few times, where chocolate is consumed for health reasons!
rubbish they say that you should eat choc everyday now. either for the flavanoids helping against cancers or something, other stuff making you feel good and less stress.......
heck half the scientific community say pretty much anything'll kill you while the other half find new reasons each week to eat the same stuff!
only believe those giving positive info the others are just kill joys trying to spoil our fun:lol2:

I hope that it is dairy free chocolate that you are eating
Of course it was!!Several squares of Green and Blacks, followed by HobNobs and bananas yummmm. Then came back and had brunch- I like food, a lot!!

Hmm bananas are bad for me too :( Green and Blacks chocolate is yummy
I just bought a bar of Maya Gold from Tesco, they have 30p off all Green & Blacks choc.
I know someone said that Tescos organic malt loaf was dairy free, does anyone still know if this is the case? Malt loaf is an excellent food post outings, but I can't eat the Soreen version, and don't particularly want to trek to Tescos, if its no longer dairy free or is really hard to get hold of.
The last time I looked - a few weeks ago - the Tesco organic malt loaf was dairy-free - and it's lovely and sticky too. I don't think it's just in the large stores because I've bought it in one of their smaller shops, though I presume that it's about the amount of demand and the shop was in the sort of area where they probably sell a lot of organic ranges
Thanks for that, we have a fairly large Tescos within driving distance, I'll just have to get a PhD friend of mine to take me there (undergraduates are not allowed cars), or cycle to the closer one, but I'm not sure that one will have much organic food.
don't forget to check the value range as i'll bet they do a value one. the cheap madeira cake was always dairy free, though i haven't checked it for a while.
malt loaf:drool: why can't i get a wheat free version.....oh yeah cause it's got malt and all sorts in....but with marg on top:drool:
I know that there are a couple of the cheaper ones in Morrisons that don't contain dairy (their own value one and another brand) so you should be able to find one that is ok. I'd look at the value ones before heading for the more expensive organic stuff.
Yeah, I couldn't get any information off of the tesco website about the value one, but I thought if they had one of any sort then it would be worth going to visit. I wasn't able to find one in the more local supermarket, I'll try M & S, see what they've got.
The dairy free one in Morrisons is called Sunmalt and my daughter eats it with no problem. M&S also do a really nice fruit loaf which is ok as well. In fact I've managed to find white and brown rolls in M&S recently which havnt got soya in which has pleased my daughter. Also their mini hot cross buns are OK. Worth a good look round their store as seems quite good for dairy free stuff.
Good old Marks seem to be doing quite a lot of dairy free stuff these days. It is a shop I never think to venture into as the prices always seemed a bit on the heavy side, but if they produce standard goods at prices less than the free from section in other supermarkets who cares?
It's about the only other alternative place for me to shop in if I need something in a hurry. It does its own dairy free margarine as far as I could remember, which was very useful as I couldn't get hold of Pure when I first became dairy free. I may go on a trip to Marks later on today!!
and you get to buy from marks n spencers.....:lol2:
i don't think they're that much more expensive. they just don't stock the value ranges of stuff. more quality you hope.
Some of the products they stock are much nicer than you can get elsewhere. Well I might head out soon and I'll see what they sell, and will report back to you all on my return!!

Their apple fruit loaf is delicious, also their angel cake and ginger cake are dairy free. They have a dairy free foods list on their website I think it is under customer services. They also do strawberry and chocolate flavour meringues. I don't like meringue much so cannot tell you what they are like - sound nice!!
Thanks for the list, thats made things a lot easier! Still going to double check all the ingredients, and it might take me a while to work out where things are in there, but things should be much easier. Thanks

I munch loads of their plain meringues - great for boosting my sugar levels so I've got the energy to get through the evening shift with the kids.
Well I went to Marks today, was doing well I thought, until I realised I'd left the list back in my room, so decided to give up and just buy the 'essential' foods!! I also discovered they have a lot of very nice food there (seemed to be reasonably well labelled, 'contains x and y'), and it isn't really that more expensive than a traditional supermarket for things like bread and rolls, its just they don't have the value ranges.
Meringues I've never been a huge fan of, but that might be to do with having to run to the shops in the pouring rain to get some sugar to make them when I was younger, but I just find they taste of air.
I think Marks gets a bit of a rough deal sometimes...... people think your a bit posh or think you have loads of wonga but it really isn't the case, sure if you fill your trolley with ready prepared veg and ready meals etc etc it is expensive but basics like their dairy free marg is not only cheaper than pure it tastes a damn sight better too!! Its the only dairy free margerine we buy, just like linny apple fruit loaf and ginger cake are big favourites in this house also.
I think Pure tastes better personally, but may have to go back to Marks' dairy free as Sainsburys don't seem to be stocking Pure, and only have their own one in stock (and I couldn't be bothered to read the label!!)
I couldn't find the ginger cake when I went in which was a bit of a pain, but I'd already spent enough by then!! My biggest problem with my local Marks' is they don't sell branded foods, which means they only sell their own soya milk, which isn't calcium enriched, but other than that I was rather impressed.

Freefrom margerine tastes disgusting - I tried it a while ago. So your not missing anything.

12-05-2005, 07:38 PM
At least the Marks and Spencer foods that state they are dairy free WILL be dairy free, not like Asda, Sainsburys etc.
i did see that tesco value margarine appears to be dairy free. cheap too, but not tried so no idea for taste.
i'm not a great fan of pure. i prefer the blue tub to the orange, ofcourse cause it costs more!
due to my diet i often just don't use marg. just as easy to not bother. m&s not all that practical for me, bit of a trek into southampton past about four other supermarkets. they don't do anything that i'm that desperate for.
linny
13-05-2005, 11:05 AM
I prefer the green tub Pure it's about 74p in Asda I think. I also make cakes with it.
M & S is actually the most practical place for me to shop in!!
I only really use marg on toast, I don't like jam, and dry toast isn't exactly appertising!
I use the sunflower one, as I don't really like the taste of soya, so try and avoid it where possible, probably doesn't taste much like soya, but I can't face it.
But I'm going to Tescos on Sunday so hopefully can get restocked then, otherwise I might have to go hungry :(
Just thought I'd share with you all, the information that I'm currently eating a rather nice chocolate sponge pudding, dairy, gluten and wheat free. Its rather nice, warm sponge with chocolate sauce!!Was fairly reasonably priced, £1.29, but on 3 for 2 in Boots, so not to bad, and quite tasty  contains egg and nuts, but also lots of chocolate sauce!! Ready to eat in under 2 minutes.
Hi Claire,
Thanks for that. It sounds gorgeous and looking forward to trying it.
Thanks.
Leanne. :D:D
I'd probably want to eat all 3 in one go. These shop size servings are never enough for me. oink oink oink!!!
These are actually a reasonable size, especially if you've already had a decent meal, before hand.
why would you want to spoil the fun by eating a proper meal before eating the pudding?? make the pudding the proper meal!
Some of us Matt, try and eat reasonably healthy!!:P I'm not sure you should be promoting pudding as a meal- stop being a bad influence :D

I must try to find these in my local Boots. It is a large store with 2 floors and sells pretty much everything. I suppose Bluewater may have them, but that branch is more beauty consultants and makeovers, if you know what I mean!
I have a carton of Alpro chocolate custard in the larder and really do need something to put it on!
They really don't need chocolate custard on top of them, there's lots of sauce on them already  I've got some sort of alpro chocolate dessert sitting on my shelf, I'm not really sure what they are or what they taste like, if anyones had them, are they ok??Or if not do I have to be guinea pig for them??
linny
18-05-2005, 09:28 PM
I've had the Alpro pots of dessert, chocolate, vanilla and fruits of the forest. I like the Chocolate ones best, the vanilla taste like very sweet custard but are nice. I found the fotf ones a bit slimey!
Excellent, its the chocolate ones I was bought!!When I get my appetite back I'll try them then.
I think I'll skip the vanilla ones as I've never liked custard, I got some quite bizarre looks about it, when I used to tell people I didn't want custard on something (this was pre-dairy free)
heynot my fault i was told by the dietician to eat more and basically eat anything that is considered back for me!! ie fatty foods, sugar etc etc. yeah i really respect her opinion!
if ever there was a candidate for imposter getting job without qualifications!
still why do we eat the best course last? lets do it the other way round. then if you're full you don't have the small salad/soup course.:bleh: you know it makes sense.
I don't have the small salad/ soup course anyway dont like either of them!!
I only ever did basic nutrition when I did food tech, but I'm pretty sure that eating foods like that will cause problems in the future- useful!!!

19-05-2005, 04:35 PM
When I went to a dietician she told me to eat all the seeds and beans etc. I really don't like kidney beans, chick peas etc. and with not much appetite I think they'd put me off food even more. I only went twice. She told me not to eat any refined sugar (cakes, biscuits, sweeties, buns, jams etc.), impossible for me!!;) She had no idea about psoriatic arthritis either!! They don't seem to be much use at all do they Matt?
I've given up reading/ listening to too much stuff on nutrition, it all seems to be contradictory!! They don't really seem to know whats going on :(
Linny if you went again, they'd probably tell you something different, especially if you saw a different dietican :D

I agree with Linny - the chocolate Alpro soya desserts are really nice. I haven't tried any of the others - I operate on the principle that if there's a choice between chocolate and something else, that's no choice at all :)
I like the vanilla one and caramel as well as the chocolate. They used to do a hazelnut one which was lovely but they stopped doing that one so that they could be nut free too. The fruits of the orchard and fruits of the forest ones are a bit like yoghurt rather than custard.
Paranoidangel I like your thinking!! We were in Sainsburys at the time and buying icecream, so had to find me something else, was bought them as a present!!Chocolate is always the answer in my world.
Pam, do these deserts taste like custard then??Please tell me they don't as I've never been a fan of custard, but if they're more of a thick chocolate sauce thing, then I should be happy enough, I'm too scared to try them
wouldn't it to be just easier to melt a bar of choc over the pudding?
dieticians.....enough said really. even my gp ( the new one ) raised his eyes when i told him her advice. she meant well but was somewhat dim. i suppose that unless you've sufferd from something similar to me then it must be hard to understand that eating more is much harder than that.
here's an odd one though......i've been bad for the last week or so and have been smoking........and my appetite has increased (not a lot ) but a bit. isn't it meant to work the other way?
Ok then Claire, think chocolate mouse without the air.
Edit, whoops, I meant mousse :lol2:
Matt, I'm confused, melt chocolate over the pudding??
Looks like it could be a chocolately alpro day for me, as I've got some chocolate milk to try as well!!
sorry i thought that people were saying they didn't like the choc sauce/custard over the pudding. so i just thought be easier to melt a bar over the top!!! heck any excuse to increase the amount of choc in the pudding!!
not that i can eat it!
and what am i reading my daughter at the moment??? yep charlie and the choc factory, he's just found the ticket!! how she got to sleep i'll never know. for a story that's meant to calm her down it just too exciting!
We read that book at school when I was about 9, I loved it.
I know I remembering reading it, not sure how long ago it was, I think I read it to myself, not sure, but it was great! There might still be a copy of it lying around at home. I didn't like the Great Glass elevator as much though, I can't remember why, but I'm sure I didn't.
Being read a story used to be great especially if the reader put the effort into make it sound interesting! (My parents managed this even after being made to read the same story to me repeatedly!!)
Matt I like the idea of chocolate over a chocolate sauce, and pudding, but think I might be ill after that much chocolate
Books like that used to be on Jackanory when I was little. Who remembers that? A celebrity reading out a children's book for 15 minutes every weekday. It used to be on at about 4.15 I think.
It had pretty much finished by the time I was about the correct age for that. I have vague recollections of them attempting to bring it back reasonably recently, but it wasn't very good!
Am reading quite a strange book at the moment, am hoping it'll all make sense by the time I finish it

I much prefer the vanilla ones, chocolate desserts are way too rich for my taste. Not sure if I've tried the caramel ones though.
jackanory.....great programme. lots of minor, then, actors. i think more than a couple have gone onto greater things. good old days of tv when they actually thought about the content and not just had a cartoon blasting the hell out each other......
clangers, mr ben, .......
going to go see the new charlie film in the summer. it's meant tobe a little better than original film as follows the story better and more in the spirit of the book. dahl being more than a little sinister in some respects.
i try to be interesting. i can't be that bad as she always wants me to read. that doesn't mean i'm good.....just not too bad.
I finally got round to trying the Alpro chocolate desserts- was rather nervous about it all (I've always had problems trying new foods) and was worried it was going to taste like soya milk! Was actually quite surprised, much nicer than I expected and not so sickly as the dairy versions used to be. Decided it would be even better combined with chocolate Swedish Glace and plain chocolate!! but then thats no real surprise!!

and was worried it was going to taste like soya milk!
I was too before I tried it. Why is it that soya milk is so disgusting, yet things with soya milk in are nice?
Soya milk doesn't taste that bad, IF you drink it everyday, because then you become immune to its taste (unless its So Good, and I just can't stomach that stuff!!), I'm slightly worried as I havent had soya milk for a few days now, and its always hard to eat the first few mouthfuls of the cereal until I develop a toleration(?) for the taste.
Best advice I can give is have soya milk with Weetabix, they taste quite strong themselves, so disguises the taste a bit!
paranoidangel
27-05-2005, 09:01 PM
I can't eat Weetabix, that's rabbit food. I was doing quite well on Waitrose own sweetened soya milk but after a while got to the stage where I couldn't finish my cornflakes without feeling sick. So I find the opposite is true - it's fine for a few days but then I can't eat it any more.
linny
27-05-2005, 09:53 PM
I will only use the Alpro soya milk, the one they sell in the fridge dept with the 'normal' milk. I've tried others, So Good, shop's own but ended up throwing that away. Alpro is a bit more expensive I think. What about Coco Pops - I'm sure their dairy free.
i tend to stick to tesco cornflakes, i prefer them to kelloggs as they stay crunchy! then use my fruit flavoured energy juice stuff for a liquid, they actually taste quite nice!! i suppose you get used to it after a while.:lol2:
I like rice milk for porridge but other than that I'm happy with Morrisons own unsweetened soya milk. I didn't like the sweetened ones and thought So Good was far too sweet. I think Lan likes So Good, but then again she likes Cheezly so her tastebuds are seriously weird.
Coco pops are dairy free so you can have all that chocolatey milk that comes from them. I like good old cornflakes though but always eat far too many.
paranoidangel
28-05-2005, 08:48 AM
I agree with you on the cornflakes Matt - Tescos own are much nicer than Kellogg's. I'm quite annoyed though that Kellogg's Coco Pops are dairy free because I've got Tescos own which taste the same but are cheaper and have loads of milk in.
I only drink Alpro or Tescos own, which tastes very much like the Alpro.
I personally prefer Kelloggs cornflakes, I think I've had Tescos before and keep going back to the branded ones, I just find they're nicer.
Weetabix are a great food- crumble them up and soak in about a pint of milk
I'm dreading going back to eating cereal, but I need to do it for my exams, otherwise I'll be hungry during them, which won't be good.
or have the full monty of a cooked breakfast. then you'll not be hungry during the exam!
if it's a choice between that and cereal i know which wins.....
tesco cornflakes one of the rare times i prefer the store own over branded. they are just crunchier. kelloggs go soft too quick.:lol2:
I don't know the cooked breakfasts still tend to leave me hungry, plenty of weetabix tends to last long enough!
Kelloggs cornflakes as a dry snack are great!!
Tried the Tesco value malt loaf yesterday, its ok, but its not Soreen!! but then what do you expect for 22p or whatever it costs :)
yeah but it's a cooked breakfast:drool:
you can't get excited about weetabix......
bizarrely i used to eat a weetabix with marge and jam on it!!!! don't know why i did but it tastes suprisingly good.:lol2:
Matt thats just wrong!!!
I'm going to stick with weetabix and milk thanks
I can't get excited over a cooked breakfast either unless its brunch and I've already had breakfast :eat:
no such thing as wrong, think of me as the cheaper version of that bloomenthal bloke who runs the resturant in berkshire. except i don't make bacon flavour icecream etc. now that is odd.
don't knock it till you try it. mind most of these are just fonds memories for me. too busy just convincing myself to eat something let alone something that's interesting or different.:(
Silver
31-05-2005, 08:55 AM
Never tried jam but I seem to think that weetabix with marge on is rather nice  ....
Now look what you've done matt! We don't have any in the house either :(
get out and treat yourself. it's pretty healthy snack wise aswell. even if you stick the jam on atleast it's fruit based!!
better than a choc bar healthy wise. when your at it try the mars bar sandwich!
Mars bar sandwich, sounds about as nice as deep fried mars bars!!
Its all a bit nasty, nice healthy snacks are the answer, (if only they tasted more like chocolate!!)
trust me a mars bar sandwich is far better than a deep fried version. yes ok not something you should eat everyday but as a treat...
like anything yes be healthy but if you don't have an occasional treat then what's the point of life?
Are you talking "mars bar between two slices of bread" as a sandwich? or two mars bars with something else in the middle? I think the bread would spoil it.
What are you doing here at this time of day anyway?
I'm confused, don't mars bars have dairy in them, or is this a past history idea??
Copper
01-06-2005, 09:05 PM
I am confused too - Mars bars are covered in milk chocolate, so why are we torturing ourselves talking about them?
yeah sorry it was a blast from the past. two slices of bread, thick marge/butter, slice up a mars bar and then enjoy. what choccy bars could we use?
i have, in the dim and distant past, made a sandwich using grated chocolate. what can i say, i was either an imaginative or insane child.
back online due to rain stops play!
I never really ate bizarre foods as a kid, I survived on eggs for many years when I was younger though. Made a really nice pork and cheese sandwich in school which was rather nice and wasnt too bad when i tried it the other day, with cheezly!Cheesy wotsit sandwiches were very nice as well :( (except the bread went orange!)

This talk of chocolate is making me hungry!!I used to survive on chocolatey things like kitkats, but now I'm not as bothered, get the odd craving occassionally, but its quite bizarre! Think theres time for a small snack before dinner :eat: !

Welcome to the site small lel. I ventured into Poole this afternoon on a bit of a whim (well I was halfway there as had a dentist appointment). I searched in M&S for food and soon gave up as I saw far too many things that I could not eat. I then went into Boots and found Free From food :) I now have these to try
A gluten, wheat and dairy free Choc sponge pudding
Pack of 5 cherry and coconut bars also gluten, wheat & dairy free
Pack of 5 fruit, nut & choc bars also gluten, wheat & dairy free
They were buy 3 and get cheapest free so the pudding was free :D
I really hope that they are nice. I tried some Frusli bars (Jordans) and they were yuk.
Copper they are nice!!Well I thought they were! The cherry bars I thought looked a bit dry but actually tasted ok, and the chocolate and fruit ones were also ok. But I think the chocolate pudding is the nicest one! if only I could build up the enthusiasm to eat it at the moment, stupid exams putting me off food :(
If you don't like the cereal bars I can find a good home for them

If the chocolate pudding is the same on I found in the Free From section in Waitrose then it is the nicest chocolate pudding I have ever tasted.
i was in the healthfood shop in salisbury and only managed to resist the selection of swedish glace they had because of the lack of freezer bag and too many people in the car. i think they had the whole selection.
welcome to the site small. not all the threads are quiet this daft. my fault i suppose.

when i was a kid my mum use to make us chocolate spread and sliced apple sandwiches. yummy.. :)
cant have it anymore cause im gluten free. My diet is starting to really get to me it worked well at controlling my symptoms to start with but now I am still getting ill so im not sure how much longer i can keep it up.:bleh:
you need to give it some time. it will take a few weeks for your body to settle down and sort itself out. stick with it, don't forget that it might be dairy and something else causing the prob. but don't go down that road till you've had time to relax.
