View Full Version : Another labelling complaint

I recently had a few people over and a friend bought a pack of 12 mini fairy cakes from the Tesco Kids range.

She had spotted the large green V on the front, making it suitable for me the veggie, and the allergy advice box on the back said: this product may contained traces of sesame seeds and nuts, as it has been made in a factory that uses sesame seed and nut ingredients.

So she assumed that it would be nice and safe for me to enjoy along with everyone else.

WRONG
6th ingredient was dried skimmed milk

No fairy cake for me :(

Pam

Unfortunately vegetarians eat milk products and eggs, only products marked Vegan are safe for the dairy free among us.

At least your friend tried, but it just goes to show how confusing it all it.

zoefruitcake
05-05-2005, 02:40 PM
Oh the V was fine, it was just the total lack of dairy mentioned in the allergies box that fooled her

Why list milk on some things and not others?

Why list milk on some things and not others?

I think that at the moment it is optional for companies to put any allergy advice on labelling. There are still a lot of products that have no warnings on them at all.

Copper
05-05-2005, 05:12 PM
Yes but the point is that if a company goes to the trouble of mentioning ingredients in an allergy notice, you expect it to be correct!!!!

Students at my College take a diet a nutrition unit and I overheard the lecturer tell the students that the most common foods that people are allergic to are eggs, dairy, nuts etc etc. Maybe some of these firms need some training on food and nutrition :)

linny
05-05-2005, 09:41 PM
I think milk should have been listed with the 'may contain nuts' advice. Complain!!!!!!!

zoefruitcake
06-05-2005, 08:44 AM
Well this nut didn't end up containing any cake ;)

I'll complain, see where it gets me, and report back...

linny
09-05-2005, 09:44 AM
 I cannot believe this! I bought some Asda Extra Special Bath Buns yesterday, I looked in the allergy box and it listed 'contains gluten, wheat, egg and soya and may contain nuts'. I ate one yesterday and had bad stomach pains last night. I've just glanced at the ingredients and guess what they contain - butter and milk proteins! I'm really annoyed as they were quite expensive and noone else here will eat them. I'm going to complain to Asda and if I don't get anywhere I might take it further! Who actually checks the ingredients in the first place?

linny
09-05-2005, 09:59 AM
Well I have now sent the email to Asda and told them that a similar matter with another leading supermarket has been passed to trading standards! I await the reply!

Pam
09-05-2005, 11:49 AM
Good for you. Asda are actually very good when you have a problem with their food and should offer you your money back plus something extra. Fingers crossed. If they are listing egg and soya they should certainly be listing milk.

Well done Linny for complaining. I hope that you are feeling a bit better.

I see a job opportunity here for one or more of us. We could check their food labels and advise them when they are wrong.

matt
10-05-2005, 03:40 AM
don't know about a job but it could work out to be a lucrative sideline. keep visiting new shops and complaining when mistakes are found, a little compensation from each would begin to mount up!

seriously though, we do need to complain when this sort of thing happens or they'll just carry on.

zoefruitcake
10-05-2005, 07:08 AM
I agree Matt, we have to complain.

It's a bit like how it used to be for veggies years ago. If you said you didn't eat meat you were offered chicken or fish. The more that people are aware of their faux pas in labelling the better it will be for all of us dairyfree.

Imagine if we knew something wasn't dairy free and someone died from a reaction? The more we complain the safer our world will be.

linny
10-05-2005, 08:41 AM
Haven't heard anything yet! My stomach still isn't 'normal' after eating that bun. I don't know how long it takes to get it out of your system. It's so annoying as I've managed to avoid dairy for ages and then this has to happen!:(

Hi Linny.

I hope you are feeling better now. We should definitely complain and let people know exactly what we think. I normally find Asda are quite good, but all Supermarkets can make mistakes and unfortunately we suffer for it.

Take care.

Thanks Lan. Another day is here and still no reply to my email to Asda. The buns are still in the cupboard and going very stale. I suppose I could freeze them. I thought it best to keep them in case they want them back. My stomach is still a bit dodgy - I'm trying to eat just plain food and hope it'll be back to normal soon.

I was up at 4 o'clock this morning with bad arthritis pain and a terrible itchy scalp, probably caused by the dreaded dairy I ate. Spent most of the day resting with magnetic bands and hot water bottles attached!! Hopefully it will improve day by day. I have just sent another email to Asda via their website asking them to acknowledge my complaint. I won't hold my breath! We hope to go up to Bluewater tomorrow evening, if my pains and stomach allow, and I will have a good look round M & S food section.

Sent another email asking if they had my original one. Got a reply to say they hadn't so had to re-type it but sent it back as a reply on her email. I'll now wait and see. Did some shopping in M & S got apple and fruit loaf and some biscuits, as the biscuits were 3 for 2. Also got some sweeties!! The ginger snaps are really nice better than Asda own brand - they burn my tongue!

Last night I got a reply from Tesco about the fairy cakes.

It seems to be a standard letter (as it doesn't actually address my comments)about their inconsistancies) and just harps on about only having to list ingredients over 5% and being aware of the environmental impact of packaging waste so they try not to use oversize packs.

Did they actually read my letter at all? I am seriously thinking of returning it with a copy of my original letter, highlighting what I wrote and asking if they think their reply actually addresses the issues I raised

Lan
19-05-2005, 01:35 PM
Good on you Zoe. It seems Supermarkets feel that they can ignore our negative comments, but with the other hand they are quick enough to take our hard earned money.

I suggest you get back in touch and let them know we are no pushovers. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Kind Regards,

I had a similar situation with Morrisons about 6 months ago. Sent them a long letter complaining that they dont produce a dairy free list and how much of an inconvenience it was. Listed about 6 points about all of the problems it caused and that they were the only supermarket not to produce one. Asked them if they were considering producing one in the future. The reply was 'Thankyou for your letter but as we dont produce a dairy free list we cannot help you'!!!!

Phoned them up totally disgusted and asked if they'd even bothered to read my letter. They assured me they would send me another reply addressing fully the points i had raised. 6 months later I'm still waiting. I wont hold my breath!!

Incidentally, I was looking at the ingredients on their celery nut and saltana salad yesterday. It states that it contains nuts, eggs, sulphite, peanuts and sesame seeds. When I looked at the ingredients it happened to contain skimmed milk powder also!! Think I might go in to Morrisons and ask to fill out one of their product complaint forms.

Keep going on that one Zoe! I'm STILL waiting for a reply from Asda, I've sent 2 copies of the email now. Village Bakeries were really good. I think the supermarkets are so big now that our complaints seem unimportant. But what if the whole of our site got together eh!!:hammer: :icon_grou

well the ideas good. all we need to do is choose a target each week or fortnight and all send in emails or contact the customer services. prob the latter will acheive more as emails too easy to delete and ignore.

so i'm up for it. who's our first target and what are we going to ask for specifically?B)

ok if everyone's in agreement then some time this week go into your local tesco and see customer services to make a complaint....and don't forget to ask what you're meant to do instead.....that way they should respond. not just file under crank.;)

I can't get to my local Tescos very easily I'm afraid, but if I happen to end up going I will ask. (I could always email head office in the hope that I get a response?) Hope it goes well, will be interesting to see what answers people get!! Good luck!

Pam

Mine will be an e-mail to head office, the youths who man the customer service desk at our local store don't seem to have enough brain cells to do anything than search a computer system to see if a product is listed, beyond that I don't think they would do anything with a complaint.

Pam
22-05-2005, 10:11 AM
My moan to Tesco via their Contact Us page, let's see what they have to say to this.

Free From Chocolate Bars

I have recently been told by your customer services staff that the free from chocolate bar has been discontinued. This is a great disappointment as my daughter is milk intolerant and not keen on dark chocolate, so this bar is one of her favourite treats.

So why have you stopped making this chocolate bar? I know lots of people who, for one reason or another, cannot eat normal milk chocolate and depend on products like this for a treat. Do you have any plans to introduce an alternative dairy free chocolate bar?

I find the whole attitude of supermarkets towards special dietary needs very disappointing. New products are introduced, not marketed very well, not kept in good supply (shelves are often empty) and then discontinued when people are just finding them. More importance seems to be given to fad diets (eg Atkins) than to the people who have medical problems requiring special diets. I remember reading an article several years ago about a mum who had a child with multiple allergies who actually became a buyer/consultant for special diet foods at Tesco but unfortunately what started off as a good move has had limited impact on local stores. Do you actually ask your customers what they want?

Please reconsider your decision to discontinue this chocolate bar. If you were to expand the range instead, then you will attract more people to buy all the products, rather than the few who just happen to see the occasional special dietary treat once in a while. We need a reliable source of specialist foods at sensible prices, not a variable supply which cannot be relied upon. I currently make a 15 mile round trip to Tesco to buy free from chocolate, a 12 mile round trip in another direction for dairy free cheese at a health food shop and buy all my other dairy free products (milk, margarine, desserts, yoghurt etc) at Morrisons which is only 3 miles away. Life would be so much easier if they were all available in one place.

I'll probably just get a load of snores after that Epic! I think they should consult sites like this to see what customers would actually like them to stock and how they should be displayed. My local large Sainsburys has a free from shelf with a free from fridge and freezer nearby so that all the stuff can be together. In most supermarkets you have to go to all the separate sections to find the various bits you need. But having said that, if free from products are mixed in with standard products at least you find them when you are looking at the alternatives.

matt
23-05-2005, 03:14 AM
it'd be too easy for us to be able to get everything we want in one place, or to expect these supermarkets to keep making the things we buy. just found out that the multi vits i have , chewable centrum. have stopped making them. no fanfare no explanation just stopped....

i don't know if it'll be a visit or email, busy for the next couple of days.

I've got my reply from Tesco, for what it's worth:
Thank you for your email.

I am sorry that you have experienced a problem with some product availability at our store. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Our aim is to offer the best possible service to our customers and this includes providing enough of the products our customers want to buy.

This product has not been discontinued although we have change supplier.

I have passed your concerns to our Store Manager, who will look into the points you have raised. I am confident that every effort will be made to rectify this situation.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

We would like to ask you a few questions about the recent e-mail communication you or someone in your household has had with a representative from Tesco. If you would like to participate in this survey please complete the attached.

Your views are extremely important to us.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at customer.service@tesco.co.uk (customer.service@tesco.co.uk) quoting TES784621X.

These replies are about as personal as my electric bill, you wonder if the person that actually wrote it even looked beyond the title of the original e-mail. (I know it was long but it did contain a number of valid points)

At least they should not be disappearing off the shelves forever, I just hope the supplier gets them delivered pretty quickly. We bought in bulk a few weeks ago though so still have about 4 bars sat waiting in the cupboard. I'd like to give them some feedback but it won't be through their on-line questionnaire - they can sing for that one!

This is the reply I got from Tescos- I asked basically why the had stopped doing their dairy free chocolate and whether this signified the end of the rest of the range.
She seems to have read it, but still seems a bit confused!!
Can anyone supply with the barcode for chocolate and any other products in the range that you like, and I will get back to them.

Thank you for your email.

I was sorry to learn that you are concerned about a probable discontinuation of our dairy free range.

For me to make the correct enquiries I would need some advice about the general nature of the products you are referring to.

Would it be possible to provide me with a precise product description or barcode for the chocolate and other products you are worried about?

On receipt of this I will be able to investigate.

Here goes:

"Tesco Free From Choc Bar - dairy free chocolate flavoured bar 45g"

The bar code on the one I have (I don't know if this is specific to that particular box which came from the Batley store) is: 5 000462 694767 >

I don't use any of their other "free from" products but buy Alpro desserts and rice milk from their free from shelves. I'm sure that Matt buys some of their stuff (dairy and gluten free pancakes I think).

matt
25-05-2005, 04:05 AM
free from pancakes are very nice. the freefrom breakfast rolls aswell. spot the person with a sweet tooth!

canbe a bit erratic with the supplies though. i end up shopping at one of three tescos just to get the things i want! why they can't do special orders idon'tknow.

25-05-2005, 06:47 AM
Might just tell them anything they've got listed in their free from range!! Don't particularly want to see it get smaller, would like to see it increase if anything.
I'll have a quick look on the website and see if there is some more products on there. I can't remember what I normally buy.

Pam
25-05-2005, 11:08 AM
Ok then, why not tell them what we would like to see.

Alpro natural yofu (in regular supply not sporadic as it currently is)
Parmazano by Florentino (dairy free parmesan cheese)
Toffuti non dairy cheese slices and spread
Cheezly/Scheese non dairy cheese
Non dairy alternative to cream
More flavours of Swedish Glace (usually only vanilla available)
Meridian free from sauces (korma, tikka masala, sun dried tomato, mushroom)
Booja Booja truffles
Sojasun dairy free yoghurts
etc,etc

cnc
25-05-2005, 11:16 AM
I went on to their website, and listed a lot of their own brand dairy free products, plus the alpro desserts, soya milk, parmazano, the swedish glace, and the cheezly, which I can get in the store at Batley. think I listed about 15 products in the end, so I'll see where that goes, if they get back to me again, I may enquire about increasing their range. I also asked for some clarification over whether the dairy free range was going to be removed totally. I'll let you know what happens.

matt
26-05-2005, 02:44 AM
so i decided to email tesco's aswell and look at their reply:

This is the reply that I got back. Think I'll email them back, and ask them what else they plan to remove and maybe even suggest that they replace the stock with things that may sell better, and actually promote the range.
Does anyone know of accurate statistics I can quote as to how many people are dairy free??

Pam
26-05-2005, 11:09 AM
Tell them to display them rather than leaving them inside a high sided brown cardboard box and maybe put some with the normal chocolate too, then people will actually see them. Morrisons had some rice crackle bars in their petrol station for a while which really surprised me.

If they don't keep a regular supply on the shelves that people can actually see, how can they expect their customers to buy sufficient amounts to make it worthwhile. It isn't like they go out of day in a week or so, they last months.

Pam
26-05-2005, 08:27 PM
I've sent Tesco another epic e-mail quoting all three reference numbers with the two different results. (Funny how Matt and Claire got identical wording apart from Claire's additional paragraph - standard response maybe????)

I'll see what they say to that one. By the way, I have volunteered the members of this site to be a sounding board for future changes and have said that we would willingly give opinions on their range and products (a few free samples would be nice). Hope you don't mind. We'll tell them what we think, won't we?

There is a definate lack of consistency in what they are saying as well! They ignored Pams comments on displaying things properly, and then said mine had been passed on! looking at it from a cynical position. they don't really give a damn about peoples comments. they just churn out from a series of standard replies to shut up the idiot who emailled and try to convince them that their opinion counts. assuming that there won't be a group like us collating the results.

the thing we need to do is send a copy of all the various replies to someone....which or watchdog or to allergy magazine/newspaper etc to let them have evidence of tescos attitude to their customers. bigger issue than just the lack of the dairyfree choc.

re: Bath Buns

"May we offer at the outset, our apologies for the problem you highlighted with regard to the labelling of the above product. We realise how frustrating your experience must have been and are sorry if we have made shopping for products which are suitable for yourself more difficult than it normally is.
Following feedback from our customers, we have carried out a detailed investigation, . We have recently upgraded the system which we use to set up packaging and specification to include a more comprehensive list of allergens. This will meet new allergen legislation for November 2005 and will mean clearer label information for our customers. We take the labelling of products extremely seriously and are corporate members of the anaphylaxis campaign. We endeavour to clearly label any allergens that maybe in Asda brand products.

The packaging for the Bath Buns is being amended by the supplier and will be corrected as soon as possible.

We are extremely sorry for your unfortunate experience. If you have any further concerns please do not hesitate to call Asda ."

I hope this helps to clarify things and we look forward to serving you at ASDA.

Wow, have just read this thread and I am so shocked to find out that milk is sometimes missed off the allergy list on products. Fro every product I buy I always check the allergy listing box and if it doesn't have one then I check the ingredients. I would never have thought to check what in a product if I'm told that it doesn't contain milk. I shall no longer be trusting supermarket packaging! Looks like shopping is going to take an extra half hour!!!!

Oh on another note.....found that Angel Cake doesn't contain dairy. Well may have to check now, but I've been alright with it and it tastes so yummy!!!! Also Sainsbury's own brand of Bakewell Tarts! I'm putting on the pounds!

My daughter likes Sainsburys bakewell tarts but cant have the angel cake as has soya in. Jam tarts are often milk free or tesco freefroms are if you like that sort of thing.

Re labelling, manufacturers at present do not have to specify ingredients if under a certain % - either 1% or 5% I think. Walls specify on their sausages ingredients under 1% as a seperate heading which is handy because it was only then that I realised that only one of their brand of sausages was alright - the lean variety. I think legislation is coming in some time in the future making it a requirement by law that manu's have to list every ingredient in the product.

if you could read the full ingredient list on mass produced sausages you'd never eat another one again as long as you live.:o

got to your friendly local butcher and explain the situ. i'll bet he either has suitable sausages already or will make some up for you.:lol2:

Sausages no longer present any problem to me Matt as my daughter ate so many of them at one stage I thought she was going to wake up one morning and have turned into one! You can have too much of a good thing and nowadays I think she would rather starve than have to eat one.

Apparently morrisons do some gluten free sausages, but there was an issue with them and I couldn't eat them.... I don't know why this was though- It may have been because they had dairy in them or that the casings were made of beef (which I don't eat), but apparently they were quite nice. Sorry I can't say whether they were dairy free or not.

Angel Cake - which shop or brand is dairy free as the Asda one has milk in (no surprise there!).

I'll have to double check the brand but mum bought it from Sainsburys so its probably their own brand. It does contain soya though - I have noticed a few people on this website can't eat that either.

Thanks I'll look next time I go to Sainsburys - I love Angel Cake. Used to have it as a kid and eat the 3 colours seperately!!!!!! The white stripe was my fave!

Hi all,

Talking of sausages, I know that Tescos have their own brand which I think is dairy, wheat and gluten free. Please check the ingredients first as have not bought them myself and unsure on what they contain. I have the Tescos low fat sausages as have to watch my cholestrol also. They only have 66 calories per sausage!!!

Kind Regards,

Lan. :D

Yeah I get the one from Sainsbury's too. Plus the small and large, and as its nice to eat its good to have for desert when friends come round.

I had one from Tesco's the other day and that was ok.

Wish restaurants would sell them then at least I could have dessert when I go out!!!!

I got another email from Asda asking for my address so they can send on my refund - I'll let you know how much I get, probably the 96p!!

Customer care is not high on their list of priorities obviously.

Pam
13-06-2005, 04:43 PM
Asda usually get a better report than the others when it comes to customer service, particularly in-store, but I can't say that I have ever had more than the cost of the product back.

cnc

Some companies are much better than others!! One company I had to ring up to complain about the product (non-food related), gave me the money back for my product plus money to cover the phone call, I thought that was quite good!!

Pam

The food manufacturers themselves are usually quite generous, it is just the supermarkets that are tight.

matt

You won't believe this!!!:( I got a letter from Asda saying that they enclosed a £3.00 gift card as a goodwill gesture. Guess what, there was no gift card enclosed - I've sent them another email. Why do I bother?!

Pam

Cheeky pigs! I hope they come up with the goods this time. I think I would have taken the letter into a local store complete with empty gift card offer and asked them to honour it.

I would be beyond angry by now, it has probably cost you way more than the £3 in your time so far.

Mind you it is the principle of complaining about it that is important and I admire you for sticking at it.

Hi all,

Pam, that is one big list!!! We culd also add:

Cheezly
Cheese and onion dairy free crisps
Generally more choice.

Should start up a list and send it to all the leading Supermarkets telling them what we want.:rant:

Kind Regards,

Cheese and onion dairy free crisps

I so want some cheese and onion crisps. They're my favourite flavour and I am so bored of plain now.

PA, You can get smokey bacon pringles, plus a lot of salt and vinegar crisps that are dairy free, supermarkets own brands tend to be better for dairy free

paranoidangel
18-06-2005, 07:04 PM
Except I don't like smoky bacon or salt & vinegar. I can eat the odd salt & vinegar crisp but a whole packet is just too much.

Just too fussy :P Is it only plain and cheese and onion you like then? Because some of the weirder flavours are also dairy free

paranoidangel

Is it only plain and cheese and onion you like then?

No, they're just my favourite. The trouble with a lot of the unusual flavours is that they come in a multipack which includes something I can't eat, like cheese & onion, or something I don't like, like salt & vinegar. Not helped by salt & vinegar being a really popular flavour.

matt
19-06-2005, 03:39 AM
buy either salted or those smiths ones with the slat packet then add a flavour of your own. oxo or similar cube.....herbs.....grated cheesley/scheese.....

just an idea. or just pick a decent dip and do it that way. sundried tomatoes or garlic mayo etc etc.

I've done the Smiths ones. But my problem is that I like vinegar but not salt. And having a dip negates the snack-like qualities of crisps. Plus I'm not that keen on any of the dips I've tried - too many of them are spicy for a start.

I am quite liking plain hula hoops and Waitrose lightly salted crisps, so if I swap between the two it's not so bad. But I really want a packet of Tescos cheese & onion crisps! (far superior to Walkers)

Did anyone read ok mag the other week with Jack Ryder "Jamie Mitchell" from eastenders on the front cover, there was an interview with him and his wife Kim Marsh, he has apparently just been very ill and the result was dairy allergy, what made me mad though, was the fact that he quoted Hula Hoops as having dairy in them (whilst running off a list of foods he couldn't have!!!)

i seem to remember reading that paula radcliffe is dairy and wheat free now...

why not email ok and ask them to forward the details of the site to him so that he can learn more about the subject.

I had a wisdom tooth out last year (top left) and was surprised how painless it was. I just had an injection either side of the tooth, suffered no discomfort whilst it was extracted and no pain, swelling or bruising afterwards. I just hate the feel of the hole that is left behind.

I really need to find a dentist - haven't been in a couple of years as the last one I went to dislocated my jaw! I've been terrified of dentists ever since!

I've got through quite a few dentists recently. They keep on leaving, which is a bit useless! One was so small she wasn't strong enough to pull out my teeth- which was very painful as a result, I nearly had to have an operation because they thought there was some root left in, so were going to remove part of the bone , thankfully that never happened. The next dentist then decided it would be nice to give me a filling without any sort of painkiller!!! I'm with Christine on this Dentists are very scary :(

Hi all,

I had a tooth out when I was younger and I didn't mind until the dentist pulled out of the needle. The needle was huge and long and I nearly passed out as hate needles.

I've also had my front tooth rebuilt as my friend accidently hit the glass bottle I was drinking from and, it hurt like hell. I felt everything as my nerve was exposed and the pain relief didn't work.

Have a dental appointment in 45 minutes. Starting to get worried now.

my latest dentist is very good - he extracted my wisdom tooth without it hurting. I always grip the chair hard when I go and he got cross with me because he said as he wasnt hurting me I shouldnt be gripping the chair. Old habits die hard. It is easier at the dentist now I can breath through my nose. Mind you I seem to suffer from the local anaesthetic - two days of flu like aches last time.

Good luck Lan - I'm lucky needles dont bother me - its just whats in them that always makes me ill.

Three years ago I had four wisdom teeth removed in two sessions. The needles were much worse than the extraction. Then 18 months ago I had four very painful sessions of gum operations. This left me with a very sensitive tooth and I had to admit defeat and go back and have a canal root filling, this had to be done in two sessions :( I guess the agony was worth it as I now don't have gum disease.

Giving birth was not as painful as any of the above. Mind you I did have short labours :)

Everytime I see that awful bum slapping Asda advert I think of you trying to get your refund. I am glad I don't shop in Asda. I think that supermarkets are much like banks - they have all got too big and greedy and don't give a nut for their customers.
