Gill I am pleased to hear that you are feeling better. I was a bit surprised to hear that you intend to go back to work tomorrow - is this wise?

Claire - Matt is just a big bully boy :lol2: I think that there should be respect for your elders.

Just been coaching an erg, extremely tired now, but shouting was great fun. Must do some work this evening and feed myself I guess.
I also had a fight with a piece of wood and lost, but ah well!!
Quiet evening for me I think.

I've also been stupid- which has annoyed me intensely. When shopping yesterday I read the labels on the sauces very carefully and chose the dairy free ones, only to discover that when I got home, it actually had milk in. Guess I picked the wrong ones up in the end. Stupid me!!

I've come very close to doing that myself, due to someone mixing up similar looking tins of soup. I was lucky and spotted it before the checkout though.

Got very sore feet still as I walked back over to the other village today - PC World have big USB hard disks for a pretty reasonable price and I wanted one so took a walk over. Got a Toshiba 320 gigabyte one for £115, which is not a bad price and it's built like a tank! It's a really good size but that does have downsides - I did a disk check on it (to look for any problems with the disk - I always do that on new hard drives) and it took about 3-4 hours!

I don't think I'll run out of disk space now as I've got two 200 gigabyte disks in my PC too! :D I have a lot of music on my PC (about 60 gigabytes - I used to be a real CD freak!) and do a lot of dvd editing and a touch of gaming so I use a lot of disk space.

fozzy what the heck do you need so much space for!!!!! what comes after giga as my brain at stupid o clock and can't think but you're bloomin near to one of those! have thought of a back up usb drive to expand my options.

not much planned today. monday tends to be chores. but there's a new cache nearby.... you and i both know i'm going to go get it!!!:lol2: addicted me? i can stop anytime i want.

i gave up on buying ready made sauces as just too much hassle with wheat and dairy. tkae them back claire i'm sure they change them.

:D

I make it 0.7 Terabytes. I've still got my old usb hard drive at the moment though, which is 120 gigabytes, so that brings it up to 0.8 Terabytes.

What can I say, I have a lot of data! I record films and stuff off TV on my dvd recorder and reauthor it on my PC (5GB a time) and I download a lot of program and game demos and stuff which takes up a lot of room. I've got thousands of digital photographs, over 60 gigabytes of music and lots of other files.

I'm using most of my first 200gig drive, about half of the second (which is dedicated to video) and the usb drive will be backup for my music, files and important videos.

Matt, I can't be bothered taking them back to be honest, will pass them on to my mum, they were on offer, so its not too bad I guess, and I'm just too lazy to get back to Tescos with them!!
My plans to work didn't go quite as well as planned yesterday, so I'm a little behind, which means today will be devoted to doing the work I was meant to do yesterday!! Probably should get on with it instead of sitting here, but I'm very tired, and am hoping sitting here will wake me up a bit
Hope you all have a good week

Have just been informed that for my field trip, we are meeting at 4am for a 7am flight!! Any one want to take bets on what state I'll be in by the time we arrive in Faro??
Am going to see Brokeback Mountain tonight, I had no say in this, even though I've got lots of work to do, I got told I was going, not sure what the point is as I'll probably be asleep quite soon after it starts!! :D

Hey Goose - howdy ho!

:bwelcome: :D

Carrying on my footwear thing from the weekend (not very interesting but it's been a boring day!) I picked up a pair of Peter Storm leather walking boots in Millets on the way home - I will get another pair of boots but I want some fabric topped ones and they didn't have any in my size so I'll look in Blacks, etc. later on this week. I've been wearing my work steel toecaps today and they're ok but I feel like Frankenstein's monster in them they're so heavy!

I enjoyed Brokeback but didnt expect too it was only that it took me half an hour to get into it as one of the cowboys had eyeliner on to start with to make him look younger and I couldnt quite get my head round a cowboy with eyeliner.

I had missed you Goose :)

I am not planning a trip to the cinema any time soon, too expensive and far too cold outside. Once I get in from work that is it I try and stay in. Once I retire I can see me turning into a hermit in the winter:lol2:

I went to a Burns Night event on Sunday. There's usually haggis, neeps and tatties (or veggie alternative) and celidh dancing. Having been the past couple of years I'd worked out I couldn't eat most of the food. But I spoke to one of the people organising it (who I knew anyway, but didn't know about my intolerances until I told him last October) and he sorted me out with a nice meal of steak. Of which everyone else was jealous. And he'd gone to Sainsburys and got me some free from chocolate cake bars for pudding, in place of the clootie dumplings.

So I was really impressed and not ill. Admittedly, it probably helps that I knew the organisers and they knew me, but it's still a big difference from, for example, the caterers at my work Christmas party who just didn't seem to have a clue and still managed to make me ill.

Gill I am pleased to hear that you are feeling better. I was a bit surprised to hear that you intend to go back to work tomorrow - is this wise?Sadly it's a financially-made decision. As I'm still in my probationary period, I now only get half-pay when I'm off ill. I guarantee I'll be equally ill if I have so little money that I'm horribly stressed about that!

Today was pretty rough, and very tiring. I did 5.5 hours as a short day, then came home and fell straight into bed. Going to have a relatively early night tonight, hopefully with a stress-relief massage again from Matt! :lol2:

Hugs to all.

Goose I'm sure we all missed you!!

Well I got my essay plan finished this morning, although a 2 page essay plan, is verging on an essay in my opinion, ah well its what they demanded, so it's what they shall get!!
Breakfast now, and then some domestic things to do, and probably a sleep soon as well, as I'm very tired with having gone to the cinema, and then didn't sleep well :(:(
Then lots of exciting reading about the 'Creative Class'.... I need to go into town today- primarily as I don't think sitting in my room all day is a good thing to do!!

We had a fantastic burns night, my boyfriend and i got all the kit on in the reid tartan and joined in the toasting of the haggis, sat through 5 poems by rob, which can get quite boring if you dont understand the lanuage very well, then tucked into the feast.... i was very lucky as i new the cook that was there that night and i got my neeps ,tatties and carrotts all mashed with no added dairy in among. so i thanked him very much, i do also remember buying him a few drammys???

3 hours of statistics this afternoon!!
Had to get up as cleaner is due sometime today, however they can arrive any time after 9, so we have to be up at 9. Means I'll get some work done (or at least attempt to).
The highlight of my day is likely to be having coffee with a friend in the afternoon :)

Lot of work still to do, cleaners arrival meant I didn't get an afternoon nap, so am not doing very well at the moment, but can't have a sleep as I've got to get this stuff read before 9am tomorrow!!
Got 2 more impending deadlines, and then after that I've got a bit of a break, but then all the next stuff is due in at about the same time, at least I should be able to make a head start on it.
What uni are you at Jazzingal?? My uni doesn't do anything for Burns Night itself, but there a ceilidhs going on fairly regularly.

I've had a real brain-dead day today, I just couldn't concentrate on anything at all! A bit of a result on the way home though - Tesco are doing 20% off all chart cds, dvds and games today and tomorrow. Picked up the Stereophonics "Language. Sex. Violence. Other" CD (£5.97), the new a-ha album "Analogue" (£9.77) and the Star Wars trilogy DVD set (£24.97). when I left though I noticed that the 20% reduction didn't look right so I took it back to the customer services desk and they'd not taken the 20% off the Stereophonics CD, so they gave me a refund for it. Spreading the cost I make it £2 for the Stereophonics CD, £5.80 for the a-ha CD and £18 for the Star Wars DVDs. That made them a bit more of a bargain! :D

I don't really like the changes in Star Wars compared to the original versions, but I've got the old, pre-messing-about versions on laserdisc (big old 12" video discs, didn't really take off as too expensive) which I'm making dvds of in case my laserdisc player gives up the ghost, so I'll have the original and new versions. The new set is supposed to look and sound absolutely fantastic as it's been fully remastered - should hopefully sound really good with my surround sound setup!

Not sure if I'm understanding you, or you me - anyway, just to clarify: I'm not talking about Episode I, II and III. What I mean is that I like the original releases of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but I'm not so keen on the new altered versions of the same films, where George Lucas has added special effects and so on. These are the versions on DVD. I've only seen the altered version of Star Wars though (when it was out in the cinema in the '90s) and I'm led to believe that the changes are minor in the other two films. I'll soon find out!

I'm happy with the price though - this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BD7NF6/qid=1138817204/sr=8-5/ref=pd_ka_5/202-0319087-6224638)is the one I got. :D

I really got it in the neck from my brother when I told him I'd bought the messed-about versions! I really was unsure about getting it and was stood at the display holding the set for ages humming and aahing over it but the restoration is supposedly superb and I've got the original versions already - plus my not buying it is unlikely to sway Mr Lucas that much.

Busy day today. According to my friend 9am supervisions are the work of the devil, and I truly believe that at the moment!! I was the only physical geographer in the group and so decided that arguing about statistics would be quite entertaining :) (It was!!)

I was completely out of it yesterday too - I was amazed that I had it together enough to spot the price mistake in Tesco! I'm a bit more with it today, which is good as I've been trying to repair a huge TIG welder all afternoon, but I still feel quite tired and I can't really be bothered with doing anything if I can avoid it. This mornings excitement has been trying oat milk on my cereal- (primarily, I ran out of Alpro and this is all there is left in my room :) ) Tastes rather like water, but its growing on me I think- makes a change from the strong taste of soya milk.
My two hour practical has been postponed so didn't have to get up at 7.30 again!!Also means it might be slightly warmer outside when I eventually have to go out.

I goofed up with the Tesco 20% off thing* as I went back there after work today and it's actually on until the 7th (next Tuesday)! I bought another couple of CDs, one for me (The Editors - The Back Room) and a Kooks CD that my brother wanted me to look out for. I'd told him yesterday that the offer was over so I hope he hasn't ordered it today - I couldn't get hold of him on his mobile. Probably safe though. Bonus was that it was marked up as £8.97 but I checked the receipt later and it was rung up at £7.97! Hmm... can I get my money back from tescos if the price error was in my favour? ;)

I was a little tempted by the Alien Quadrilogy set (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000C24F3/qid=1138985765/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/202-0319087-6224638), which was £23 (so just over £18 for a 9 dvd set!) but I've got Alien and Aliens already (older versions) and don't really watch those a lot! I'm trying not to buy dvds just for the sake of it so I resisted temptation - was a real bargain though!

Don't worry, it was an easy thing to resist. :D I might walk over to the other Tesco store this weekend though as they might have some stuff that the smaller in-town store didn't have (were quite a few blank spaces when I looked). Other than that it's going to be a quiet weekend for me, just doing a little light shopping and tidying up and slobbing about the place a bit. Bank was surprisingly helpful, I still had my cheque book, so after answering numerous questions, managed to withdraw some money to last me a little while.

and so starts a sunday morning.... never my favourite day of the week. vigin radio on dab so atleast some good music on. but an anti climax from time with daughter:(

good laugh going around the art gallery though. enjoy it while she does as soon enough she'll be into other things. and hanginf about with dad isn't going to be her top priority.

so a few hours to kill before the chat room and sci fi time on tv.

go on then fozzy fess up how much did you spend at tesco's? no way you walked all the way then not get anything.
i resisted but then i did spend £30 odd on amazon yesterday on four books. so they'll be here in a couple of days. :)

Well unfortunatly we didn't end up going to the Japanese restaurant, as we hadn't booked as my friend and myself, thought there was only about 5/6 of us going, but there ended up being 10 of us!! So ended up going for a curry instead, unfortunatly this meant a lot more walking for me, and I wasn't very well at all by the time we got there. Curry was nice though :)
Still suffering this morning, and I've got to go out in about an hour:unsure:

I didn't spend too much as I haven't been to the other tescos this weekend. Parents have just left from their morning visit and I feel a bit muzzy-headed from a late night so I doubt I'll go out today. Might go back to the in-town Tesco tomorrow so I'll do a little research today and see if there are any other chart cds I might want to get. The total so far though is:

Star Wars DVDs £20
Editors CD £6.38
a-ha CD £7.18
Stereophonics CD FREE!

So just under £34. :D

Missed out on the chat today, nevermind. Was busy cooking sunday lunch for the 5 thousand. was not too bad. Had a trip to Balmedie beach this morning, North sea looked rather rough, but the weather was good enough for a stroll.
This afternoon i did some house work and im off to relax in front of trashy tv.
Boyfriend has the MAN flu!!! which seems to attack every man in there life at some point. Although it's like no other flu that anyone else gets. What is it about men when they are ill, it's like there lives have caved in. They want to try a being a woman for the day..:soapbox:

Missed out on the chat today, nevermind. I feel very hurt by this- do we not matter?!

Boyfriend has the MAN flu!!! Man flu- so that'll be about a week off work for him then!!

Am quite annoyed, was feeling very unwell this morning, and could quite easily have cancelled the outing, but I'd made the commitment to go and coach, and so was furious when I discovered we didn't have enough rowers to make an outing :( :(
I was right, my essay isn't going to be done in time, nothing to do with the fact that I spent over 2 hours in chat this afternoon :lol2: and then spent about an hour watching Futurama (rest is important)
Nearly dinner time- bacon, scrambled eggs, beans and toast are being made for four of us!! Not that I went to brunch or anything earlier today....!!
Hope you've all had a nice weekend.

Matt - hope you get that OU work started this afternoon as planned. Its probably a fair point about man flu, its a good sign that I can see the funny side as I am currently going through a period of psycotic axe killer phase myself.

Also seem to have reacted badly to something in the Chinese I had for sons birthday bad tummy and temperature, bad back etc...possibly the soya, same reaction I had to the Thai couple of weeks back. Looking forward to checking this out with gastroentorologist who I see at end of March.

Off to Ikea today. Friend is driving so that is cool.

claire where was my invite? sounds lovely! There was also mushrooms and tomatoes- unfortunatly the toast was, as is so common in student accomodation, a bit mouldy, so I decided that I would pass on that!!
But other than that, it was very nice :eat:

There's not much they can do about a late essay- they can complain to my DoS who knows I'm doing the best I can and is going to back me up, so they'd probably just look worse for complaining!!

Feeling dreadful this morning, have a lecture at 12, and should really do some work before hand, but at the moment I want to curl up back in bed!!
Ah well, Mondays are normally quite quiet for me, I need to buy some food, bread and a little bit of meat so will probably do that after my lecture.

Hope you all have a good week.

Balmedie beach! I've been there. Brings back memories of my student days!
I have had a sick week as I had a flu like virus which turned into a chest infection,1st lot of antibiotics gave me a skin rash and the 2nd lot made me sick! Back to the doc today to check out what is left in the cupboard,so now I have steroids and antibiotics. This week is looking up already! Creative writing class this afternoon so I better iron out my brain into thinking mode!
Enjoy your week everyone!

Awaiting my new tv which is being delivered today, hooray! i cant wait, the other one keeps cutting off (think the tube is going) so the new one should be hear before the good life at 7, the oldies are always the best, will try and log on later, have a good afternoon every one

Goose, I haven't had chocolate for two days thank you very much!!
Went to a supervision this morning, on glaciers, was quite good, and then had lunch with my friend, before going to a meeting at the DRC, who are going to loan my equipment to try and make my life easier, and have told me to fill in some forms to go to my Education Authority so that I can be assessed. Great more prodding and poking no doubt!!
Think its time to watch some tv and then maybe do some work, before going to yet another meeting- its our colleges head race this weekend, and I've got to go and see whether I'm expected to be marshalling or what

Are you near a Holland and Barratt or Sainsbury or Tesco (and so on...) as they should all sell the Swedish Glace ice cream, which is seriously gorgeous! I tend to stick to the vanilla as that's the only one the sainsburys delivery service does (but it's my favourite ice-cream flavour next to raspberry ripple, which I think you can't get in dairy free), but I know H&B sell quite a range. H&B are a bit more expensive though.

I've been feeling a bit rough today with a bit of a stomach upset, nausea and tiredness. I'm developing a bit of a headache now too so I'm going to get off the PC when I've written this. I don't think it's a reaction, as my brother and parents have all just had a bad bug/virus and I saw all of them at the weekend when they were starting to get over it, so maybe it's that I've picked up. If not I'm not sure what I've eaten that's affected me.

I felt pretty rough this morning but I had a sandwich mid-morning and felt better for a while after that. Started feeling worse in the afternoon though, but I'm not going to go through the 'man-flu' dramatics. I have had some seriously bad viruses though - I lost nearly a stone in weight in a few days when I had the last one!

I'm told by Claire (cnc) that people are asking after me, so I thought I'd post a quick catch-up! :lol2:

I'm alive! However, it's been a seriously distressing couple of weeks and I've suffered pretty bad depression due to all sorts of interesting stressors. However, I've seen the doctor about it and she says the way I'm reacting is very normal, given all I've been through. So I'm getting some support.

I'm healing really well. I still have a very sore wound on my chest - the one they actually took the gallbladder out through - and I keep wanting to pull at the stitches to see what happens! Everything seems to be going well though, and I usually don't even need paracetamol now, never mind the opiate-type drugs I was on before.

I had my probationary review at work, and passed with flying colours despite my worries about it. I was told the Board were very happy with the work I've done and the amount I've achieved in my post. However, due to funding and structural problems they STILL can't renew or extend my contract when it ends on the 3rd March. I'll be paid my owed holiday pay after I leave (no time for a holiday!), which will give me a little more leeway to find alternative work.

Part of me's really upset I have to leave...I've worked really hard since August to take that place from a huge concrete shell to a living, working refuge, and I feel very attached to the project. However, I've learned a lot from it, and I have to admit it will be a relief to be away from the ridiculously oversensitive office politics in the organisation.

Now to find another decent job, preferably on a permanent contract this time! I've sent off for 4 application packs today, and will keep an eye out for other things I can do.

Wish me luck...

I haven't read up on all of your recent postings, so my apologies if I've not commented on something important. I've hardly been online at all in the last few weeks, as I've been coming home and falling exhaustedly into bed!

Doesn't mean I don't love you all! :lol2:

I'm feeling a bit better now. I'm a bit up and down with it today, which is what makes me think it's a bug rather than a reaction, but I'm just a bit bleaugh with it, nothing major. Ok, so everyone call me stupid - I've found out that it IS a reaction. I took the afternoon off today and on the way home went in Tescos to buy some more of the malted submarine rolls I ate on Monday when I notice below the allergy info:

"may contain traces of milk as made in a factory using milk ingredients"

That's why I'm feeling rough, not a virus! I feel a fair bit better today though, only a hint of the stomach twinges and less tiredness and no nausea. I took the afternoon off though as I was bored, the atmosphere in the workshop (hot dry air) was making me feel a bit worse, its sunny out and I needed to do a load of stuff in town. Luckily for me my supervisor lets us take holiday at very short notice if we're not doing urgent work, so I could ask this morning for the afternoon off.

Didn't get everything done as I started feeling pretty hot and tired and came home but I got most of the stuff done I wanted to - renewed my library card, bought a load of clothes, found a new jacket (finally!), took back a dead energy saving bulb to Wilkinsons to get replaced, bought my brother a Birthday present and bought some food in Tesco.

...oh, and I noticed that Holland and Barratt are selling the uht Alpro soya milk cartons buy one get one free, but didn't get any as I had rather a lot to carry! Maybe tomorrow.

Eep, Goose! That must have been really worrying - hope he's recovering well and you've calmed down from the kerfuffle.

Sounds like everyone's having a bad dose of SOMETHING at the moment, except for me for once! I seem to be just about fine except for itchy healing sites. :) Hope everyone recovers soon.

I just saw my external supervisor, and got very good feedback about my management. She's offered me an extra reference to take with me, which would be very useful and means I have a whole set of hopefully-excellent references for prospective employers.

However....my team are NOT happy I'm leaving, and I'm trying to persuade one of them not to look for a new job, as the project needs decent, spirited and stubborn women to make sure it goes ahead as planned! I suppose I should take it as a compliment, but it leaves me worried about my baby project - I want it to succeed even though I'm leaving!

It's also been a pleasure working in that team (any unpleasant politics have been inter-team, not within mine), so it'll make me sad to go. I DO think that schools close at the drop of a hat these days (norovirus notwithstanding, as I can see why they wouldn't want a D+V bug hitting all the kids!)
It was almost impossible to get our school to close- the only times it ever shut were- when the school hall exploded (I wasn't at the school at that time), and we got one afternoon off, when they had to turn the fire alarm off because it was faulty!!
They semi shut the school once, when part of it was on fire, unfortunatly, I still had to go in!! As I say, it takes a lot to shut my school.
I must say it seems to be a lot of Southern schools that close for these kinds of things, my junior school never closed for illnesses.

Busy day today- 10-12 practical, 12-1 lecture, 1.30-2.30 meeting. Means my essay probably still won't get finished!! I also need to go and cancel a supervision, because I may now be allowed to go to the topic I wanted to do to begin with!!
Also the Net MD, is not behaving. The point of it being that I could have a recording of all my lectures, however, apparently you can't download stuff recorded by microphone onto the computer, so a friend is going to come and see if he can work out a way to sort it out!!

Chat is regularly a Matt free zone during the week- means someone else gets the attention for a change :D

2 hour lecture imminently, then an hour break, another lecture, then technically another hour off and then a lecture, but I'm not staying for that one!!
Bank partying this afternoon, so should be nice and exhausted this evening :(
Hope you all have a nice Friday

Matt - the convention was in London. I know the one in Bournemouth is somewhere round Valentines Day, so presumably this weekend. I haven't been to that one for a while though because I don't like the people running it, and they charge far too much for a day ticket. And hold it in the red light district so I have to leave before it gets dark.

I'm agreed that anything north of Winchester is up north :)

Tired and rather grumpy now.
Done quite a lot today though. Went to a lecture, which was meant to be 2 hours but only lasted an hour. Then took a walk into town-possibly that was my first mistake of the day. Then attempted to do some work (mistake 2), and discovered I'd been asked to sub into the race today-was very tempted, but said no, which wasn't fun.
Then attended another lecture, before going home and then spending several hours by the river bank. Hence I'm now very tired- sorry this has been a bit of a moany message :(
I shall sleep soon, and hopefully it will all be better in the morning.

Matt, I was only quoting what I've previously been told by a certain person :D :D

what muppet sub you for the rowing claire? have they had their head in a bucket for a few weeks?

The captain of the senior women, I spoke to her later on, and apparently she was absolutely desperate, and hadn't seen me around for a while so was hoping I'd made a recovery. When we chatted, she said she realised she probably shouldn't have asked me at all- made me feel better about saying no to them at least!!

Hope you have fun at the motor museum Matt.

Ian is coming this weekend, which will be nice. Going out for dinner and then hopefully catch up with some friends. Then I might persuade him to take me to Tescos on Sunday morning :) I'm pretty much foodless now.
The exceedingly late essay is nearly finished!! Needs a read through and bibliography adding- its a bit dodgy, but at least its done.

I know what you mean, I find saying no hard too.

My brother and a mate are off to London to take photos today. I would have gone with them but I still feel a bit tired and low on energy from my milk reaction the other day, plus I haven't broken in my new shoes yet so I don't want to do that walking around London! I'll do shoe breaking in around Chelmsford later on instead and I'll take my camera too.

Thanks for the replies. Bad news really as I can't take NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories). :( Have been doing the physio and it seems to take the tension out of my jaw. I've been warned about chewing gum - it can be good for your teeth but it's bad for your jaw. I've never been a 'gum chewer' though!

I bought the ingredients to make a bakewell tart with the pastry I bought. We're hoping to book to take Megan to see Chicken Little tomorrow. Hopefully the bakewell and the cinema will take my mind off pain for a while!!!!;)

I got told to avoid lots of hard foods as well- crusty bread etc, oh and toffees, which isn't applicable, but things in those general areas.

Went out for dinner last night with Ian, was quite nice, just spending some time together, and then I'm dragging him out to Tescos soon- he's not too happy about this, but he'd probably get guilt tripped into doing it anyway :D

Not sure what I'm doing this afternoon, it depends what time Ian leaves to be honest, so I might be on chat, but not sure.

The essay got finished and sent off yesterday- finally!! On to applying for a bursary now- its worse than applying for a job- trying to explain why I need the bursary, what I do for college, and my academic strengths- feel like I'm attempting to sell my soul, oh well :)

Hopefully I'll speak to some of you later

I have managed to watch some winter olympics. I enjoyed the pairs ice skating - don't understand the complicated scoring system. The mens luge was interesting - hurtling down an icy track on a tea tray - sheer madness. The downhill mens ski run was thrilling. I just love the ski jumping too :) I enjoy the winter olympics more than the summer.

Difference between luge and skeletonbob= one is head first, one is feet first on a tiny tea tray!! I've always quite fancied bobsleding!!

Hmm sadly doctors don't live in the real world. The higher up they are then the less they understand how us lesser mortals live. We don't have servants to pander to our every whim, so we have to do our own shopping, cooking etc. In your case you have to get into college which is exercise :(

rebecca c
13-02-2006, 06:01 PM
If you do find a doctor that lives in the real world hold to them they are like gold dust but they are out there. I spoke to a friend today who found one who took the time to sit and do some internet research with her into how gluten intolence may be exacerbating her heart condition.

I am doing an oats challenge over the next couple of days and just had some flapjack - feeling nervous even though I wouldnt expect a very severe reaction from oats....wish me luck.

I don't understand the new scoring system either, Copper, even though they explained it to us. I'm looking forward to seeing them throwing each other around for longer this evening, although I'll have to tape Life on Mars as they clash. I also enjoyed the luge and the ski jumping. But am looking forward to the skeleton - I remember it from last olympics.

I only remembered there was rugby on last weekend this morning when someone mentioned France beating Ireland. Or possibly the other way round. I don't watch rugby as I have just as much idea of what is going on if I don't watch it.

Well the oats have set me off a bit so I am going to stop the challenge to avoid feeling bad when I take the kids to London and the science museum tomorrow. However it is a mild reaction so it may be worth having them once a fortnight or so, depends how many other things I am just including every now and then and how much they are setting me off I suppose.

Had a great Valentine's Day until about 11pm. Got in the shower....got out of the shower....realised I was bleeding profusely from the main operation wound I have.

Works out an infection in the wound (which I knew about and have been on antibiotics for) has prevented the inside of it healing...so when the dissolving stitches did their thing - by dissolving - the whole thing opened up and went SPLUT. I like that word, splut. It's very descriptive.

So...back to the hospital for me. They've resealed the wound and stopped the bleeding, but have had to take me off the antibiotics as apparently they've stripped my stomach lining and essentially burned it. So I'm off work today under orders to rest, take some meds they've given me to heal my stomach, and try not to go OWWWW too much at the interesting hole in my sternum.

Hospital. Just the place you want to finish your Valentine's Day celebrations....no, really!

No, so fingers crossed. I think he has the influenza B that is going round, dont know for sure as there is no point going to the doctor cause they'll only tell me to keep doing what I'm doing and we will catch something else in the surgery. Dont know if the flu jab would work against flu B.

That is good news Claire. Have a great weekend.

Goose - I have been very good and weeded most of my back garden - it looks really good. This afternoon I have been slumped in front ot the TV watching the Olympics. I liked the ski jumping and the skeleton bob was thrilling.

Great news that your wallet was found, Claire - did you find out what's left in it? Hope it all turns out well. :)

I've had a looooong week, which ended with me taking my staff out and buying them stiff drinks. I'm hoping to relax lots this weekend.

Who said it was a good idea to wash the windows today!!!!
I managed to sucessfully jam my finger in the hinge while turning the window and sliced a line into my finger nail, which is now in half in the middle of my finger, looks like it will bruise and fall off in time very sore. and it did'n help with the cat staring at me either.
So im all bandaged up for a cpuple of days. at least the windows look clean i guess.:confused:Eep! I realise this is late (haven't been on in a couple of days) but I hope that heals well. Anything cutty/bruisey to do with fingernails makes me cringe! *hugs*

Cycled to the department then to my supervision, back to the department (guy who had wallet wasn't there first time), and then back to college. Glad to hear you got your wallet back Claire!

Matt - OUCH! Not good at all, but you've got an excuse to be waited on hand and foot. ;)

Well my last week has been pretty good. I may be repeating myself from the photo thread so apologies in advance:

other than my 24 hour virus thing at the start of last week I've been feeling pretty upbeat, no doubt helped by me buying my digital SLR camera last Monday! I've also been taking omega 3 capsules for a week or two so don't know if it's an effect of those or not - I'm certainly feeling more with it and not as out of tune with the world as I had been in January!

We had a major gaff at work where an engineer destroyed a critical piece of test kit and that wound up with us building a test gear in three days so that the production people could get the product out! Really we should get some kind of recognition for that, but I don't hold out much hope as our department doesn't seem to go in for that kind of thing very often.

I took Friday off to play with my new camera and bought a backpack and a long lens for it and took loads of photos around town, then on Saturday I went to see my brother and took loads more piccys around Ipswich. Yesterday was spent relaxing and processing all the photos from Ipswich.

Back at work again so same old, same old but picked up some photography books in the library to read and am going to rustle up a baked spud with chilli beans for dinner in a bit, then sit down in front of the telly and chill.

I actually got thanked for my work on a particularly nasty project - that I even worked on when I had flu. Because I used to share an office with the people in charge of the project they know all about my intolerances, so rather than buying a box of chocolates (which they would for anyone else) they asked me what I'd like. I suggested they visit the Free From section and get me some biscuits.

They came back with some Trufree chocolate chip cookies. As they don't say milk free in big letters I had avoided them up till now. But there's definitely no milk in the ingredients and they are really nice. Suffice to say the box is not lasting long :)

I have finally discovered the interactive BBC channels on my Freeview - wall-to-wall Olympics! I'm especially enjoying the men's curling. Partly because I sort of understand what's going on from having watched quite a bit of it, partly because I sort of understand the skills involved having tried short mat bowls, and partly because the men's skip is good looking (and incidentally, only a year older than me!).

The excitement of my day is going to be the room ballot!! I get to choose where I want to live next year- there's too much choice, its worringly stressful. I'm at the top of the ballot as I was at the bottom last year, so I've got a choice of approximately- everywhere that college owns, which isn't a fresher room!!
Time to sort some more of my dissertation out, over the next few days, although how sucessful that is going to be is beyond me, as I have a busy week (I know I'm meant to be limiting my activity), but medical appointments have to be attended!!

Matt I hope you get an appointment soon, and that you start to feel much better soon.

PA- I agree the interactive channels are much more interesting, can watch what you want- I have to be careful, as we're only allowed a certain quota at college of network use.

Oh wow! Not just my family then! :(

Matt hope you're feeling better. My niece's boyfriend had stones removed last week. They sat him in a 'bath' of water and sent some sort of electric current through the water!!!!! Think it was Bupa hospital though.

Brother-in-law went in for angina test and had a heart attack whilst they were doing it. He was ambulanced up to King's College for immediate op. Couldn't believe he came out the day after as no beds at local hospital!!!
My niece then fell over at school so hubby and I took her to A & E last night, thankfully just a badly bruised shoulder.

Today my daughter was ill but hopefully she'll be ok for tomorrow.

What is going on - everyone seems to be ill!!!

I hope you all feel better really soon. And for those interested I haven't had time to make the dreaded Bakewell tart yet! I've now frozen the pack of pastry.

Had a bit of a worry today. Our Visa statement turned up with the envelope ripped open and 22/2/06 post mark on. I rang Visa and they sent it out on 16/2/06.

They suggested that the card was cancelled and will issue a new one - so no credit card for the weekend. Will have to find some money to get the groceries with as we've not been shopping for 2 weeks. cnc
24-02-2006, 07:03 PM
No, it doesn't seem like the most sensible thing to make me do, but the consultant says do it, so its got to be done. Both GPs I've spoken to seem a little concerned about making me do this, so it could be interesting.
I've got a presentation to make at midday, but as I'm gettin breakfast in the morning, it shouldn't be too bad. The day after may not be so good though!!
(I can only make one trip to uni a day anyway....)

Lou C
24-02-2006, 07:56 PM
Why does he want you to fast?

cnc
24-02-2006, 08:23 PM
Well there are a number of answers to this: 1) My personal opinion is that the consultant is a sadist and wants me to suffer!! 2) They think its fun to run random tests on me and 3) which is probably the truthful answer- they are testing for glucose levels- tests for some rare form of diabetes I think, that can cause a tremor. They're also taking blood for other stuff at the same time. Anyone fancy taking tests on whether I faint?!?!

paranoidangel
24-02-2006, 08:46 PM
That seems strange, cnc. I had a glucose diabetes test and I only (!) had to fast for 12 hours.

cnc
24-02-2006, 08:59 PM
Yes, having spoken to another GP, the max they make their patients fast for is 14 hours. Maybe answer 1, was actually correct then!!
I've had normal diabetes tests done (no fasting), but I think this is to test the base level of glucose or something. I don't know, I just heard the phrase 24 hour fast and got scared!! I've has a look through the letter and all it says 'exclude an organic cause for the tremor by checking glucose at end of 24 hour fast). Is it any real wonder I'm doctor phobic?!

linny
24-02-2006, 10:25 PM
I've fainted having a blood test without the fasting!! I'm a nightmare to get blood out of which makes me panic straight away. Having to fast for 12 hours for a cholestorol test was mega for me. I had to fast for 24 hrs and take 'clear out' fluid to have a colonoscopy and survived. I'm sure you can drink lots of water too. Make sure you take a tuck box and drink for afterwards and a good friend!

You can request to lay down whilst havng a blood test - this always helps me, horizontal before they start!! My GP says not to worry about passing out as you won't know about it until you wake up! Hope all goes well.

oooeer not good not having anything to eat for 24 hours. make sure there are plenty of treats lined up for after. a pain but if it eliminates yet another problem then that has to be good.

don't need to make an excuse to avoid the b'day party at the moment unless it was next door as there's no way i'm driving far to go to one! too nervous of a stab in the back. need to get this problem sorted. roll on next friday when i will atleast have an idea what is going to happen and when.

i've had a a couple of tests done in the past that meant 12 hour fasting.

the specialist was less than impressed on thurs that i had been prescribed calcium tablets for no dairy without any testing for my calcium levels...could bethey are the cause of the stone!!! sods law.

Yes, I got told I can have black tea and coffee, diet coke and water- I like my tea with milk, don't drink coffee, and diet coke; rather not pump by body full of chemicals!! So water it is!! I will be taking food, especially as I've then got to head off to my department for a two hour soils practical, then a meeting and a 2 hour lecture!!

You can request to lay down whilst havng a blood test - this always helps me, horizontal before they start!! My GP says not to worry about passing out as you won't know about it until you wake up! Hope all goes well.
I've never fainted before, so I'd quite like to avoid it!! Not sure how many sets of bloods they're taking, as they're testing for 3 things. Last time the doctors took my blood they took 5 sets, my poor arm- not convinced it had much blood left in it!!

oooeer not good not having anything to eat for 24 hours. make sure there are plenty of treats lined up for after. a pain but if it eliminates yet another problem then that has to be good. The problems its testing for are very rare conditions, there's a case of one of them once about every 10 years!!

the specialist was less than impressed on thurs that i had been prescribed calcium tablets for no dairy without any testing for my calcium levels...could bethey are the cause of the stone!!! sods law.
Sods Law is everyones favourite friend....

I suppose I should attempt to do some work this morning. I'm going to see Measure for Measure this afternoon- not the traditional version though.
Hope everyone has a nice Saturday.

I am staying indoors all weekend. I have had enough of the cold weather this week. Yesterday the only ice I saw was the car park at work - it was like an ice rink. They posted a man on the barrier just to tell us to be careful. I guess that the grit and salt has been cancelled as part of the cuts in order to save money!

I just wouldn't survive up north. I have always felt the cold :( When I retire I will become a hermit in the winter :lol2:

A number of my ancestors came from the fens and I don't know how they survived. The constant damp caused lots of health problems, so I have read.

Yorkshire is the frozen north to me.

I only live half of my year in Yorkshire, the other part I spend being subjected to Siberian winds, in Cambridge!! It's warmer than Leeds in the summer, but I think it gets colder sooner here, we get more snow and ice at home, but the cold weather starts sooner here (or maybe its because I'm always on a bike, which makes it seem colder?)

I'm back in the world of posting. Flu has cleared up, still cant breath well at all but I expect to take at least a couple of weeks to get back up to speed on that, so 2 weeks of increasing frustration at not being able to get everything done.

Claire, the only thing they can do is keep testing till they find something, its what they did for me last winter and they found something eventually and it wasnt a really bad thing either, so I hope you get the same success. I find doing my own research helps and puts pressure on them to get a move on. I do find I am getting better at dealing with doctors now being far more assertive and not feeling guilty about bothering them. Yesterday I emailed my consultant for advice and he replied the same day in a supportive and helpful way. The new GPs seem as good as can be expected too.

Matt I hope they get you sorted soon. My dad had kidney stones but they broke up when he went in for his preop examination. They listed dietary changes including no mineral water and strawberries, of course I'm sure the calcium tablets could be a cause. I have been thinking about the idea of calcium testing myself as they are expecting me to make myself ill to increase my calcium intake but nobody seems to have actually tested me for osteoporosis or low calcium its just an assumption it will be a problem.

Looking forward to a spring when we will all be enjoying the fresh air and sunshine and feeling better- we can be a right load of hippies. I hope to get some of my art project done today.

The likelihood of having either of these two things is very low- thing I may have to accept a diagnosis of Post-Viral Fatigue syndrome soon.
I've done a lot of my own research and also have a second GP who I run everything past, so that I know I'm not being messed about!!

I hope to get some of my art project done today. Did you get much of your project done??

I filled in some forms relating to my dissertation and then went to see a version of measure for measure. Was good, quite enjoyed it. Exhausted now, but have cooked dinner and for the first time for a while it doesn't contain bacon or pasta!! I think I may have several oil splash burns now though....

Need to work on my dissertation proposal tonight, haven't really done any of it, but the stuff for the forms I had to send off today, may just get copied and pasted to form my proposal :D
Should be around tomorrow so will try and catch some people online.

Did you get much of your project done??

No!! Sat down with my eldest to start to build his internal combustion engine (christmas present) and an hour of that wiped me out for the rest of the day. Obviously not too happy that this is my limit but at least I spent the time on something worthy.

My Dad is coming down to help me tomorrow night - thank goodness. It'll be great for the boys to have someone looking after them who is fully functioning and the dog can get some decent exercise, might have to pay a dog walker for a couple of weeks till I'm better when he goes home.

Hope you have got the dissertation stuff done Claire.

leeds the frozen north??

anything north of winchester counts for that. cetainly north of newbury, fact if it snows then that is the cut off point for a heavy load, south of that it's rare.
my relatives come from wales and scotland!! you'd never believe what i wear to keep me from freezing. i'd not survive for a min alsewhere.

good to hear the illness's are slowly being cnquered... ok not you and i claire but.....

quiet day yesterday with daughter watching aristocats and charlie and the choc factory on dvd. need to venture out a bit more this week to make sure i'm ok driving as will be getting daughter as normal on wednesday..involves a bit of driving which is making the kidney a bit tender..

Hope you have got the dissertation stuff done Claire.
Dissertation proposed- was exhausted, so spent about 12 hours in bed last night though as a consequence :( :(

good to hear the illness's are slowly being cnquered... ok not you and i claire but.....

Matt once you get your kidney stones sorted, then you'll be back to where you were, and the CBT may do a lot of good for you as well, so with any luck you'll make an improvement soon.
Unfortunatly I'm rather grumpy at the moment, I hurt in various places for no reason, and appear to have a rash thing primarily on the inside of my elbows, which itches like mad, but I can't work out a cause for it!!
Oh well!!
Probably should get some work started soon, although I'd much rather just curl up in bed.
Will aim to be in chat this afternoon as well

Take care all.

Well, I've done the supermarket tour today, Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys in just over an hour and a half, am worn out now and know I'm gonna be in pain tonight, but at least thats it now for the week! Got to go for a medical tomorrow at the DWP. so probably won't sleep tonight for worrying about that. Someone who's never met you before can meet you for half an hour and make a judgement about your life and your capabilities! Wish me luck.

Claire, I sometimes get itches rashes on the inside of my elbows about the size of a 2p, it is eczema and in my case usually stress induced - blooming itchy isn't it?

I've been awake since 5.30 this morning thanks to a battery operated toothbrush that started buzzing at some ungodly hour in the bathroom, it must have fallen over and the button got pressed so it was vibrating away in the airing cupboard against our bedroom wall - took me ages to work out where the noise was coming from.

No buyer for our house yet, we have dropped the price now and everything else in the area has sold so if it doesn't drum up some interest this week I will be devastated. We have seen a couple more houses and one that we had written off before we even viewed is the favourite so far. It needs a load of work and is only 3 bedrooms rather than 4, the decorating is eclectic with oriental wallpaper, murals, bits stuck on the walls here and there, chocolate brown bathroom suite and burgundy wc downstairs but it has a garden not dissimilar to Kew - loads of mature exotic trees and shrubs.

Hi, just to let you know, I might not be around much for the next couple of days, have got some stuff to sort out, as I'm on the verge of quitting university at the moment, so need to get myself a bit more sorted.
