View Full Version : For those of you old enough to remember Ice Magic...

Silver Spoon have brought out a new version of this old favourite (a squeezy bottle of chocolate sauce that sets solid when it is poured onto ice cream) and the best thing about it is..... it is dairy free. This one is called Monster Crackin'. I'm sure it takes longer than the old version to set though. I found my bottle in Morrisons next to all the other ice cream sauces.

Ingredients: sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oil, vegetable oil, fat reduced cocoa powder (what? with all that oil in there?), lecithin, flavouring, tocopherol-rich extract.

Apparently its quite nice!! You can get it at my local cinema, as an ice-cream topping, and from what I've been told, its quite nice.

I used to like the chocolate orange flavour and I'm sure they did a chocolate mint one too. The new one seems to come in plain chocolate only though.

Ah but if we buy loads maybe they will bring back the other flavours. Tesco here I come :)

I will have to see if Waitrose have this. Mind you, I've nearly finished my tub of ice cream, I might be forced to buy some more if I find some Ice Magic...

Stop talking about nice foods, its not fair!!It's really hard to find anything nice to eat round here, can't get ice-cream when I want, which is normally about 9pm any day of the week!!and there's not much variety in the shops for anything exciting. Plus I need to eat more healthy foods :(
However if I find some of this stuff, I'm sure I'll give it a try- got a plan to put it on bananas!!

Copper

Ice Magic goes solid because of the reduction in temperature - ie it is designed for use on ice cream. Your banana would have to be very cold!

It'll work I'm sure!!Either way, I can have fun trying  Banana in fridge, or bowl in freezer?!
However the more important point is: *Don't buy the white chocolate sauce one, it has skimmed milk powder in it.*
The other two are fine though.

I didn't know they had other flavours, Morrisons only had the plain chocolate one.

cnc

It comes in choc 'n' orange and white chocolate only. The silver spoon website seemed to indicate that the normal one was the one most easily avaliable. Tescos seemed to be listed as stocking the other one.

I had a look in the Waitrose in town at lunchtime and they didn't have any :( I did buy some caramel Swedish Glace though, as I haven't tried it yet and I am going to Tescos on Wednesday.

ok i was in morrisons yesterday they have a sauce called treats comes in lots of flavours but we can have

dark choc, strawberry, maple.

then the lyles golden syrup version in toffee and i think caramel flavours.

both designed for icecream to set hard on top.

double check the ingredients but i'm fairly sure these are the ones we can have.
i think they're about 92p each so quite cheap

enjoy

mmmm all that is making my mouth water! Its only half ten and I am seriously considering swedish glace and choc sundae sauce, I know I am sad but I make my own!!! (175g plain choc, 50g dairy free marg, 50g c.sugar, 2tbsp golden syrup, 200ml rice or soya milk. melt choc with marg, stir in sugar and syrup till dissolved, pour in "milk" and cook stir continually till sauce starts to thicken, does not set on ice cream but tastes fantastic and takes literally 5-10 mins. Must look for the ice magic, brings back happy memories of smashing it with the back of my spoon once it had set.

I have managed to forget to look for Ice Magic two weeks in a row now! Maybe I will remember next week. I have been known to melt some plain dairy free chocolate and pour that onto ice cream - very nice.

I've been promised a milkshake made with dairy free ice cream, chocolate sauce and other exciting things over summer!! Will probably be very bad for me, but hopefully taste lovely- thankfully its not being made in my kitchen as I'm a very messy chef!!

There's only the monster crackin one by Silver Spoon that actually sets as far as I know, all the other ones remain runny. This one doesn't seem to set as well as the original ice magic either, if you go too heavy with it you get drips all over. Best make a hole in the middle of the ice cream so that you can make a puddle with it.

matt

it's icecream...half the fun's the drips! and seeing if you can eat it without wearing too much!

i've been known to grate choc over the top...ok you dont get to break the surface but you do get the choc without any hassle of melting etc....B)

Matt, I resent the nutter comment :lol2: But yes, it does make a lovely dessert as the textures are quite different...

I looked for the "monster cracking" in sainsburys at the weekend and was lucky enough to find they had lots of flavours in stock, dark choc, milk choc, white choc, orange choc and mint. But the milk choc and white choc contain dairy. I've invested in the orange choc one and will let you know how it is once I get round to buying some ice cream to put it on

Pam

Who needs ice cream? Just tip your head back, open mouth and pour....

Edit: that sounds terribly common doesn't it? You wouldn't catch me doing anything like that. I'd probably tip it on a chilled plate and eat it off there once it solidified.

Yeah, yeah - I believe you. I'm sure you wouldn't just eat it straight from the bottle

I found the dark chocolate one (very nice) and the monster cracking (ditto). Orange chocolate sounds very good though.

I like the sound of mint :) I really must put this on my shopping list. If it isn't on the list it doesn't make it into the trolley. I always aim to spend the minimum amount of time in Tesco.

Pam

My neighbour is growing lots of different varieties of mint (the herb) he has a chocolate mint plant from which he gave us a cutting - that is very nice with ice cream. You could just splat a couple of after eights onto some ice cream - maybe melt them in the microwave first.

Copper
04-07-2005, 09:43 PM
I didn't have room for pudding tonight but if I had I was going to have some mint matchmakers and ice cream together

matt
05-07-2005, 03:24 AM
i've got a choc mint and a basil mint growing well. got them as plug plants a couple of weeks back.

as you say pam cut out the middle man and cut down on washing up, straight from the bottle. you're helping to save water and so on!!:lol2:

My husband wanted to know what Monster Cracking was on our shopping list. :D Tesco had the plain chocolate and the orange version. I bought the plain but have not tried it yet.
