Lactose in sleeping pills

Hi!

Just in case any one else on here gets sleeping tablets, I was perscribed some on Friday that contained lactose (and also wheat for those intollerant to that too) so if anyone else gets offered some by the doc, make sure you double check them before you take them!

Thanks for that. I try to avoid most tablets as they seem to contain lactose. It is used for the coating and the contraceptive pill has 99.9% of it. For those allergic to milk, please be advised that condoms apparently contain it as well. The vegan society produce milk free ones.

I've got Surmontil to help me sleep. They are actually tricyclic anti-depressants but taken in a very low dose. They don't actually contain lactose which is a surprise. Unfortunately the loratadine tablets that I have for hayfever do contain lactose and no doubt my contraceptive pill will too. It's a good job I'm not badly allergic, I think I can probably cope with the level of lactose I have at the moment as it doesn't really seem to affect me.

loratadine tablets that I have for hayfever do contain lactose
Loratadine liquid form is dairy free, it tastes pretty nasty, but you get used to it! May be worth asking your doctor for that instead....
It also seems to be quite effective, (I combine it with Flixonase), but the two of them seem to be keeping my hayfever under control

There is a great little health food shop by bedford bus station (near HSBC) that know what they are talking about if you want advice. Although I will warn you that the 2 guys that run it are a little.... odd I think is the best word! But they are very helpful. However it is quite expensive in there compared to major supermarkets so generally buy things from them once so I can be sure it is suitable for me then usually Sainsburys (the one at the roundabout between shakespear rd and manton heights) sell the same stuff cheaper as they have quite a good selection.

Hello, I have just been advised to go dairy free and realise my sleeping pills and contraceptive pills both contain lactose. Hmmmmm..... Can anyone tell me if it worth stopping dairy whilst continuing to take these medications? Does it depend on the degree of my intolerance?- thanks

The amount of lactose a person can tolerate is unique. I can't tolerate any now and even the small amount in a tablet is enough to make me feel sick :(

You could try to find a lactose free sleeping tablet. I am not sure that there is an alternative for the contraceptive pill. I seem to remember the mini pill might be lactose free.

If all else fails you could go to a health food shop and buy some lactase capsules. The lactase will break down the lactose. You need to take the lactase just before you take the pills/tablets which contain lactose.

Lactose is used in a lot of medication as a filler e.g. Antihistamine. If you are lactose intolerant like me, read ingredients list, check with pharmacist, as gp's do not always have this information. You may be able to get an oral solution or effervescent tablets (soluble in water).

Amazingly even some IBS tablets contain lactose!!!

Lactose is used as a filler in many medications look for one's containing cellulose or sucrose or liquid medication or soluble in water. Hayfever medications contain lactose you have to read the patient information leaflet you get with the medication or like me i am fully lactose intolerant my chemist has put this on my records so i am never prescribed anything with lactose in. Lactose is often used as a filler in tablets. I myself take liquid medication or soluble to avoid this. Some medication tablets use cellulose or sucrose check the patient info leaflets or ask your pharmacist. My pharmacist knows I am lactose intolerant and ensures that I am not given this in my medication.
