Was going to have Herta hotdogs for my lunch today, and then when I checked the packet they had milk proteins in them :( the cats did pretty well!
Does anyone know of a tasty frankfurter or vegan hot dog that is "safe" to eat?

Hi there.

Have never found one, but if anyone does please let me know. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Kind Regards.

You could just use normal sausages instead of frankfurters....
Other than that I can't suggest anything else, but I've only ever used normal sausages to make hot dogs.

Boil a normal sausage in salted water? I know when you do sausages in a casserole that if you don't brown them off beforehand they look more like hot dog sausages (texture is similar too). I did manage to find one type in a tin at the supermarket but I can't remember which one it was now as we don't tend to eat them very often.

I'll have to have a look at the tins then - good to know they exist, thanks! :)

It could be just a case of poor labelling that the milk proteins were missed off, so be careful. Some of these cheap brands can't always be trusted to get things right (then again, neither can the big boys!).

Last time I bought them (a few months ago) Tivall vegetarian hot dogs were vegan, and taste very nice. They're also very handy, as they go straight from the freezer to the microwave, and are ready in two minutes.

I get them from Sainsburys (a really big one) or the health food shop.

ooh thanks - I'll look out for them! I thought there must be a vegan alternative somewhere...

Just found some more - I was looking for something a bit lower calorie than the Tivall ones, and found some called Fry's Hot Dog Viennas.

They're bigger than the Tivall ones (normal size, rather than three mini ones as a portion) which I think is better, but I don't think they're quite as tasty. Though that may be because they're meant to be done for 1min 15 secs and my microwave doesn't do that level of accuracy, so I just had to guess.

I got some Old Oak Premium hot dogs from Morrisons yesterday, they come in a tin and were on BOGOF for about 75p. I'm not a fan of hot dog sausages because they don't have any really good meat in them and far too much salt but the kids like them once in a while.

thanks again guys - I've got a few options!
I don't eat them on their own that often, but they are nice added to soups and the like!
