View Full Version : Weight loss!!!

I've just been to the doctor and have lost 12 pounds since going dairy free about a month ago! What a result! He has now offered me Orlistat (fat blockers) because I still have another 4 stone or so to lose but I'm worried about the side effects of that (I've had most of my colon removed following bowel cancer) so have decided to just carry on as I am, since it seems to be working.

I have decided to allow myself one bar of Green & Black's dark chocolate a week and one packet of Kettle chips, to make life worth living. Although both are dairy free, they are still fattening so I need to watch it. I don't think that's excessive though. The other thing is the booze - since I've been keeping a food diary I've noticed just how much wine I'm putting away of an evening, and it's a lot more than I thought. So I'm now making sure I have at least 3 alcohol-free evenings a week and not going over 2 or 3 glasses on the other nights (unless it's a special occasion, then I get hammered if I feel like it!)

Must keep up the momentum now and not start to let it slide. Going dairy free has changed my life immeasurably - it's been years since I lost that much weight.

Well done :) Keeping a food diary has its uses as you then know exactly what and how much you are eating/drinking. I hope that your weight keeps moving in the right direction - at least you are trying without the aid of tablets.

Hi Jayne.

Good luck with the weight loss. I too am trying to lose weight. At present I have gone down from 14 1/2 stone to 13 1/2 and still going. Just hoping to get down to about 10 and that will be great for me.

Well done Lan and Jayne, keep up the good work. I've had a bad week this week as I have been exhausted and fed up so as usual I have turned to food to make myself feel better. I haven't gone over the top but I haven't really been good.

This weekend we are going camping and with no cooking facilities we will be having fish and chips and BBQ stuff plus snack foods to keep us going, so not the best time to be on a diet. Not to mention all the drinking that will go on (we're going with a gang of friends).

Good luck to you all.
Hope you are all successful in getting to the weight you want.

Lots of luck to both of you. I lost a fair amount of weight (11kg) a three years ago, and have kept it off (with the occasional wobble) so I know how it is.

I've found that a few low calorie ready meals are dairy free (especially the posh ones that steam in the microwave) and use those on nights when I'm knackered and would otherwise get takeaway. That helps immensely!

Surely weight loss shouldn't be a chore, so don't worry to much :) Pam, am I missing something here, is that fish and chips for everyone except you or you as well? I thought batter generally had milk in it?

Because we didn't have cooking facilities we were dependent on shops/other people doing the catering, which is traditionally fish and chips on Saturday lunch and BBQ on Saturday night/Sunday lunch. In the end I had a bacon and egg sandwich for Saturday lunch, BBQ saturday night washed down with a whole bottle of cinzano (!!!), I had a Jordan's cereal bar for breakfast and then couldn't eat anything else for the rest of the day because my stomach felt very fragile (blame the sudden grease intake) so I had nothing else to eat until the rest of the family had fish and chips when we got home and I made a bowl of porridge for myself.

The weather was good - windy at Flamborough on Saturday but lovely in Filey and Sunday was just glorious and I am sporting a red nose again. We camped on some waste ground beside an acquaintance's house and I think the locals thought the gypsies had moved in as they all walked past staring, they will no doubt have been pleased to see us go yesterday morning.

you drink a bottle of cinzano and then still persist in thinking that any bad stomach stuff is due to too much grase or food problem????

couldn't possible be something to do with the alcohol by any chance?

go on admit it. it's just possible that what you had was a hangover not ibs due to the food!:lol2:

I've only ever been sick twice when consuming alcohol and had some dodgy food at the same time and I don't usually (not that I drink that much) suffer from the morning after bad tummy. I do, however, suffer badly with grease overload making me feel ill when I have been on a low fat diet for a while. So the jury's still out on that one. It is not an experience that I will be repeating in the near future though.

Claire, I missed your bit about fish and chip batter. I'm not aware that it has milk in as my daughter has never had a reaction to it and I'm sure we would have seen a reaction if there was one to be had. I know that they certainly don't make it with milk but I'm not sure if the dry mix has any milk in. However, home made batter is usually made with milk.

Well done to everyone who has managed to lose weight! I've been trying for the last couple of years but the more effort I make the more I seem to put on!! Any hints and tips welcome!

Fair enough Pam, I must enquire at the fish and chip shop and see what they say then. I thought most batters would be made with milk, so will investigate.
Oh on a similar point, home made batter if you replace the milk with lemonade its a lighter batter and tastes better, had some on some home made potato fritters last night.

Hi Broxine,

My tip is to go and live with the mother. Mine just keeps weighing everything and making me eat healthy food. Not complaining though and actually quite enjoy being looked after.

My best tip on losing weight is counting calories. If you eat less than you need (lots of calculators on the net) you HAVE to lose weight. Its a pain, and boring, and mucks up your social life, but it is simple. And simple is at least easy to keep track of, if not to stick to.:)

Exercise makes the whole thing take less time, which is a really, really good reason to do it...

Hope that's at least vaguely useful.

won't go down too well but the way to loose weight?

eat less move more. stop eating when no longer hungry not when full. subtle but significant difference.

I'm normally an "eat what I want when I want" sort of person and have lost a stone so far just by cutting down on fat and sugar intake and upping the fruit and water.

I went for my blood pressure and weight doing at the health centre yesterday for a new contraceptive pill prescription but as my BMI is over 25 I can only have 3 months supply and if I have not reduced it to below 25 within 3 months I can only have a progesterone only pill. (One of our doctors has been on a course where they said that overweight women on the combined pill were 5 times more likely to have a DVT so that is now a new rule!). The nurse worked my BMI out as being 26.6 but I put the same figures into the BBC calculator and got 25.9. Hopefully if I can lose another 1/2 stone I should be under the magic 25.

Unfortunatly I agree with Matt, if you eat more fat/food than your body needs, the extra will be stored as fat and you put on weight. The ways to solve that are eat less or be more active. Doing both will help even more.

Good luck Pam :) If its any consolation the nurse at my local health centre apparently said that BMI, might not be that useful as a health indicator anyway! I can kind of agree with that as it doesn't take in to account an individuals phyisiology. I'm at the top end (depending on which calculator you use 22.5-23.5) of the ideal range and I'm only a size 10/12!!- It doesn't take into account muscle density etc.... Body fat % is a better way to test weight.

you need a combination of the results to really know but you know in your own mind if you are overweight or in need of a dietary change. discounting certain illness' it still comes down to less in more movement. sorry
