View Full Version : Chicken Warning

A dairy free friend warned me today that Sainsbury's have started putting milk in their frozen chickens, so check the labels next time you buy a frozen chicken from any supermarket.

Also be aware that self basting birds are likely to contain milk too particularly 'butterball' ones. Other meats to be careful with are processed chicken and turkey products and processed ham, lots of these contain milk.

Wouldn't it be lovely if you could buy a piece of meat in a supermarket and know that it contained nothing other than the meat of the animal that it came from? I suppose the best option is organic meat which at least has tighter controls on what goes into it.

who'd thought that eh.. obviously self basters goes without saying, but i use frozen with gibs and buy stuffing from jewish shop, when make it up use dairy free spread and hot water.

thanx for warning though, seems we are not safe from anything anymore.

went work saturday, they took my microwave away said if i eat they have to prepare it, H&S lo..my ass... went all day without food!!

so it seems even my jobs on line now..isn't that being labelled???

We have no canteen and no kitchen at work, just a drinks machine on free vend and a snack machine selling crisps and milk loaded chocolate. I didn't have time to make sandwiches yesterday so I had to go to Boots and search for something that was dairy free in their sandwich selection - not an easy task! They certainly don't make it easy for us!

Hi Pam

they messed with the wrong person with me lol, but i messed with high man lol so now when my letter goes in, it will be to same person I threatened lol.

there excuse was H&S if we eat food that has 2 b prepared it has to be done by them.

I took a letter in from the specialist to explain and they wasn't interested. I think we all need to do something bout this cos if all places were same then we wouldn't be working.
Anyway I snook a breville in lol and did bacon n cheese ones, i took small travel kettle in to make my fruit teas and I used my own water!

That will teach them.

You see we can't trust anyone who isn't understanding on these matters especially in big canteen firms to heat food up from a dairy free environment. Geese where i work which is only 1 day a week cos of my other disabilities can't even do jacket spuds proper, they charged me £1-90 for spud which was raw n cold. they sed they would do me salads every week, we can't have processed meats especially ham, and i only like lettuce cucumber and beetroot, thats gonna cos me £3 there!!! and would not fill me up. Cos of the SIBS i eat little often and sometimes cannot leave my stall so I have to have it all there.

I took loads stuff in sat and bought loads blue ice.. cost me £10 and my coolbag was real heavy..

WE REALLY NEED TO FIND OUT OUR RIGHTS ON THIS IN THE WORK PLACE..

I cannot eat sandwiches all the time? and I didnt know boots did any dairy free???

if you like crackerbread try the asda one called snacker bread, thats dairy free and nice with toffuti cream cheese and salad..

Good luck!!
if pic shows this is for all those who don't understand us lol.

thanks for the reminder pam, i always check labels now even if i buy it all the time, you never know what they will try to sneek into the food.

you would think somthing as simple as chicken does not need to be messed with?

and flow i'm sure there must be a directive somewhere for eating in the workforce, they probably keep it buried somewhere deep and dark. :o

Hi
I will get to the bottom of it, I don't give up easy and as I have a proper reason now I need to fight this one out, not just for myself but for all of us who have special needs. If your in a wheel chair they give u a ramp, specail parking, with cild, special parking. so why are we different, they think cos you look ok you are ok.

I think everyone has the right to be able 2 live the way they have to if you know what i mean.

Going back to sainsburys chickens, I was in asda the other day and wanted corn on cobs, they too (the small ones on sticks) have butter in them..

It makes me MAD ...

anyone any ideas as to what we can all do to start something for more shops 2 stock, workplaces to help more, and make our lifes easier? surely if they stock this food then they can up their takings.

also, i bought a double fryer today... from the catelogue, has 2 sep baskets so those who have family on norm dairy can have their own side.

remember if they cook things with wrong coating you can be consuming it too, only small amounts but still consuming.

Hi all,

Irmgard I must say I like the picture and agree that we need to know where we stand in the work place.

This is just totally wrong. We should be catered for as we become ill, and they loose out as time of work is sometimes inevitable.

Will e-mail AllergyUk and find out about this.

Keep munching guys.

Kind Regards,

Lan :D :D

Hi everyone, new girl Jacqui here. It is truly extraordinary that 'they' feel the need to put milk products into chicken. AND how difficult it can be to get medications without lactose in ! <_<

With all the brickbats we can hurl, I'd like to award a bouquet to the girl in the canteen at Howletts wildlife park in Canterbury. We spent the day there on Monday, and I did the usual "does x, y, z have any dairy ingredients ?" Having found a (very tasty) dish that I could eat, before she served it for me and WITHOUT ANY PROMPTING she went and washed the serving spoons so that I was sure to be safe. :D How kind and thoughtful was that, if only more people were like that. I was really touched and made sure I told her that she was gr8 !!

hi jacqui

its nice isnt it when peep understand and go that extra length.

its really makes me mad as we get labeled as "awkward " etc but they will never know if it will happen to them at any time.

i am gettin a bit better at work with the "reheating" of foods but i have found my health is suffering more.

also, last few days i have been very bad girl and had chocolate binges, i have come out in tiny pink pink prick all on my tum and legs (toP) DON'T HURT OR ITCH BUT ARE NOTICABLE. I HAVENT TOLD MY DR AS I 4GOT BUT HE DID TELL ME OFF FOR CHOCOLATE BINGES. I GET DEPRESSED I TOLD HIM, I CAN'T HAVE TABLETS ..SO ITS BEER OR CHOCOLATE. the wierd thing is "i am not a choclate lover" and now find i am eating or craving foods i never ate...tomatoes, raw onions and chocolate of course.. i have started suffering now after my own made cereal out of that dairy free book and rice milk... so i get down.. its chocolate or alcohol... the latter being better for me!!!

i have took a liking to white maltesers lol, but i swear i will stick to it this time lol...

3 cheers for the girl in the canteen at Howletts wildlife park in Canterbury..

LAN did u get any response from allergy uk???

luv

Irmgard

I have read before that we often crave and binge on foods that are bad for us - I used to have a real thing for rice pudding and could eat it straight from the tin, several tins per week. In fact I love all things milky and it has been difficult to let that go but I do feel better without it.

I was also a big chocolate addict and would even go to the extreme of binging and hiding the wrappers when I was being really bad. Since I've been dairy free I have restricted myself to dairy free chocolate (eg Plamil) or dark chocolate (Green & Black's Maya Gold is delicious) but I've found that I don't crave chocolate nearly as much as I did previously.

I've recently started suffering from bloating and wind which I think is down to wheat so I really need to look at what I'm eating. I only need to look at a sandwich and I feel uncomfortable. But I love pastry and can eat fruit crumble until it comes out of my ears, so maybe its the old 'binge on the badness' thing again! It's bad enough suffering at all but it's really embarrassing when your stomach starts moaning and groaning at work and you have to escape to the toilet every 10 minutes.

Hi, I agree with Pam that G&B's Maya gold is delicious!! They also do other dairy free choc and I discovered last month that they do the most georgous drinking choc  It tastes fantastic when made with rice milk, but not so good with soya milk. ( Mind you, I'm biased towards rice milk anyway!) It comes in jars and sachet's and I can get it in Tesco, no probs.
In Thorntons they are very helpful and, if u ask the staff they will look in their special list of ingredients to see if something is milf free. ( The slight trouble is that you may come across the 'made on a line also preparing milk products' prob. However I have found that I can have their dark choc bars (inc Mint and Ginger flavours), best of all though are their dark choc covered ginger and dark choc covered marzipan.
Once my husband got for me a WONDERFUL choc. bar (from Tesco again) that was bitter choc with ground coffee beans. It was very expensive and came in an outer plastic envelope. I can't remember the make but it was OUT OF THIS WOLRD !!
Yum, what are we like !!! I think that sometimes we are so restricted that we deserve to treat ourselves, that's my excuse anyway !!

Also, has anyone noticed that the LLoyd Grossman sauces have allergy advice at the bottom of the list of ingredients. This is everso helpful, cos we can tell at a glance that something is safe. If only more companies were as helpful. Nut allergy sufferers are well catered for now, yet we still struggle even though probs with milk are more common than nut probs.
Hope all have a gr8 weekend.

PS,
By the way, Irmgard, I know just how you feel with the bloating and how painful and embarrasing it is. Have you tried using peppermint tea to calm the upper part of your digestive system and Colpermin for the lower ? Colpermin delivers the peppermint directily to the lower bowel by using a capsule that isn't digestable further up the system. There have been times when I honestly don't know what I would have done without it. Hope this helps.
Love Jacqui
