I've been buying up loads of M&S tinned meals as some are milk free (but still have gluten and wheat). The Chilli Con Carne (std and hot) are very nice indeed, and I tried the meatballs in tomato sauce* tonight and that was good too. On offer at 3 for 2 (£1.79 each, but some other tins are more expensive) at the moment and very good for those "I just can't be bothered!" meals.

The chilli is probably the nicest tinned chilli I've had. I prefer a thicker sweeter saucy chilli and most are very watery or just poor, but this one really tickled my taste buds so I've stocked well up with tins of this!

*I cooked some basmati rice to go with it and it worked quite well as it soaked up some of the sauce. Went down well with a bit of home-made bread!

If you like those, you might like the Sainsburys tinned meals, which are also on offer at the moment. I don't trust the meat in tins, but the vegetarian spag bol is good, and the ravioli is OK though a bit salty.

I tend to avoid M&S as so much of their stuff has dairy in - worse than any other supermarket - but these sound worth a try.

Tinned meals? I've never seen these- but they sound useful for sudent meals!
Will be going into M&S today, so will have an investigation, thanks.

I'd agree about M&S - I haven't bought anything in there for a looong time, but I was in there with my brother a couple of weeks ago and noticed these.

Nic - I've had some of the Sainsburys meals. I like the veggie ravioli and the curries (beef and chicken). I've got a veggie spag bol in but I don't think I've tried it yet. The Sainsburys little jars of pour on pasta sauce are good too - the Mediterranean vegetable Be Good To Yourself one is particularly nice. Just cook some pasta, strain it and mix a jar of the sauce in. Makes a very decent quick meal.

The tinned chilli in M&S is good on it's own or with rice as a student meal, but is very nice with some decent chips or a baked potato!

I actually like M&S for dairyfree. They were the only supermkt which sold milk and soya free hot X buns last easter (and are still selling them now)!. They sell several rolls which are milk and soya free and I cant find rolls anywhere else which are both of these things. Until last week even their sausage rolls were ok but they've now relaunched them with a new 'buttery' taste - how annoying! Their large tortilla wraps are very nice also and much better than anything I've found in Morrisons. Am interested in these tinned foods - will have to go and investigate!

Do you not have a 24hour Tescos or anything?! Apparently they're very quiet at that time of the day (unless you live in an area with students :D )

Matt-dress for winter, get in your car, drive to Tescos, there will be a space near the front so won't get cold walking to the entrance and then just stay wrapped up and you'll be fine!

I've been to Tescos at 5-6am a couple of times, but that involves a 30 minute walk to the store and 30 minutes again on the way back, so I don't do that often. I don't mind walking that distance, but it's a pain with a few bags of shopping. There's no bus service there from my house (especially at that time of day!) and I don't have a car or bike so it's Shank's Pony for me.

It's definitely good to go very early though - it's quiet and peaceful on all the roads that are normally full of traffic and the air is much clearer and fresher at that time. If there's a spot of dawn chorus going too then that's brilliant.

i dress for the winter most of the year! large body area being 6'7'' but not much body mass as only 10 stone hence loose heat very quickly

Just realised this 24 hour Tesco idea is one I can use myself (spend the evening in college, feel hungry take a quick detour to Tescos and its solved!!) Think the Co-op opens 6am-10pm or something like that so quite useful as well.
